Sounds like the selector mechanism has come adrift.

Take a look at Eper on the blue toolbar at the top and have a look at transmission outer controls on the Multi, it could be that you just need a new balljoint.

You need to remove the airbox and the battery to see what's happened.

hi just took a look looks like the part but its not numbered its the bit marked the damper number 5 looks like a bracket

Think this might be the bracket on top of the selector rod.

If you look at picture 3/3 - is it the arm on top of the part numbered SGR.21219?

thanks for all the help i have had it sorted at a mates garage today, the bracket had snapped in half from the gear box it held 2nd and3rd gear linkage i think he said, well he has welded the bracket together and welded a strenthening plate to it so fingers crossed it wont snap again cost me £60 for 3 hrs labour

I'd check the clutch operation, that arm is pretty robust. There have been rare instances of the arm going at the weld but I haven't heard of this one before.
It might be the linkages need adjusting, clutch system needs bleeding, was gear selection ok leading up to the problem?

gear change was fine uptoo the point it snapped, i had as complete clutch kit fitted 18months ago so i know that should be fine, guess it might be corrosion. This multipla has been a Friday afternoon car list of new parts repairs windscreen, clutch kit, cam belt snapped after 2200 miles engine rebuild skimmed etc, gearbox mounts snapped, both wishbones twice, brake calipers seized new all rd frontsprings snapped new suspension bushes x2, camshaft sensor renewal, turbo blown, headlight cracked handbreak cable broke to much to remember plus many an mot falier for things i have fixed or replaced a few months before the mot and they have wornout before it gets there and now this anything else to go wrong please let me know i hate this car with a passion but carnt do without it:bang:

Jesus, 2200 miles!
Was that from new or from when you owned the car?
Suspension is under-engineered, I've replaced front A frames, drop-links, ARB bushes, trailing arm bearings, rear shocks, cambelt done, EGR cleaned and blanked,
N/S door lock, crank sensor and a couple of relays.
Battery will need replacing before winter as well.

However, it's done 80k miles and as I have 10 schools within a mile there's more speed humps than the car can cope with.

i brought it second hand bostons of stafford fitted a new one when they sold it me but yep bit early to break in my opinion anyway i live in the sticks with potholes and a good motorway run everyday in it and it lives outside in all wheathers like i said in my first post its a labour of love for the car i will love it again come tomorrow when it gets me to work and back in one piecec lol

I love by ugly bug running sweet as a nut again 120 mile rd trip and no gear problems changing better than it has done in ages:)
