Having gatecrashed nuddmanns' thread at length, I figured I should be dirtying my own thread instead. So here's this weekends' progress update.

Saturday (in classic 'Jesses' diets' voice) 'I was mainly wire brushing'. To be more precise, just over two and a half hours non-stop wire brushing per rear swing arm and drum brake assembly, followed by (slightly) less time degreasing and brushing the front hub carriers, track rod ends and caliper carriers (note - the standard Bigg Red silver paint isn't particularly durable. After only 2-3 months of summer use, some corrosion was already starting to poke through).

Today I finally got to paint some bits:

I also left all the sundry fittings that will be reused to soak in soapy water for a while, then scrubbed them up. First the rear subframe bits:

Then the front strut stuff:

Generally, these bits are wearing and weathering pretty well. Considering that they've been through 135k+ miles, all the seats for the springs look in good fettle.

Small recommendations for the equipment used, if anyone's interested:

Despite looking like sure candidates for a miserable crop of blisters, the cheap Screwfix wire brush set I used stood up very well. After eight hours almost non-stop scrubbing away, my hands are blister free (they don't even ache) and the brush has almost all of its' steel bristles intact.

Halfords high temperature black engine enamel goes on very nicely, covers well and is pick-it-up touch dry in around two hours (warm weather today though). £7.50 for a 250ml tin.

The cheap, round bristle brushes from B&Q (in one of the photos) are great for applying this paint onto fiddly surfaces. Very little bristle loss, holds the paint well and has a nicely pointed tip for getting into corners. For a quid, I don't think you'll do any better.

Now it's a case of wating for my rear subframe to ome back from the powder coaters. That should be this coming Friday. Before then, I can assemble the new struts and top mounts and get them ready for fitting. If I get time, I may try to get another coat of paint onto the swingarms and drums.

And finally, a couple of piccies of my new (mullered) disc . Am I glad I didn't go far with this on.
