Yesterday my 2003 1.9 JTD had to be recovered due to what I think is a failed gearbox mount resulting in the whole gearbox/engine dropping, and the driveshaft ending up resting on the suspension arm. What a noise it made after it went. The car is now safely at home but I need to purchase a new mount and get it fitted ASAP.

Does anybody know the best place to get one? or is it a Fiat only part?

What do I have to remove to get access to the mount?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Mine went too, about 2 years ago,on 2002 jtd, luckily i spotted it before it fell to bits. I was told by several motor factors that its dealer only part so thats where i had to go. I think it was £55-£65 evenwith a bit of haggling.

After a good look under the car I found the broken mount. Here is a picture of the old and new. The new one cost £83.60 from Fiat. Now for some lunch then out to fit the new mount.

Yes, the good thing about it is it's very easy to get access to - at the very front bottom passenger side. The bolts at first were a bit stiff to come off but with some WD40 and left for a bit they were ok. Putting the new one on was easy too using a second jack to jack up the gearbox. No other damage done except a new clip on the inner gaiter was required.

I'll be slowing down over the "traffic calming measures" methinks, the loads that these put on the car are immense.

If I understand Shepherd correctly, this mount is sprung-side (i.e. not part of the unsprung drivetrain), so things like speed bumps shouldn't affect it. That's why I'm a bit alarmed by the picture - that failure's been caused by the engine/gearbox moving on its' mountings! Still, I suppose it shows that those mountings definitely serve a purpose. My JTD always fires up with a hell of a 'clunk'.

I suppose you could get end loadings transmitted along the line of the half-shafts as the suspension travels (are the shafts splined to accommodate this?), but that would be pretty poor geometry design by Fiat if true.

Just had this happen to my '08 squarenose. Be warned, oringinal mounts are now obsolete. There are pattern ones around thankfully.
