the clutch seems to be slipping slightly in 3rd, 4th and 5th when i occasionally floor it to overtake..
however the biting point is fine, a feww inches from the floor, bang in the middle!
cant understand it...gears all engage fine and doesnt give usual worn clutch symtoms..
any help appreciated

I was gonna say it could be the dual mass flywheel...i have sold my multipla and now drive a galaxy tdi and i was having problem with weird noises on start up and clutch slip on cold engine, but biting point was ok and car engaged all gears ok...it turned out to be a worn dmf, so had to put new clutch kit too...£800 in parts alone good job my galaxy is in warranty as is expensive!!!!

Do check for oil contamination. There is a little plate on the bottom of the bell housing that you can unsrew and have a bit of a look. But I'd expect it to slip pulling away. So DMF issue is possible. Basically the DMF is an inner and outer ring with a friction ring between them. This is designed to slip, but when it wears it slips more than it should. If it were oil it would probably mean DMF removal anyway to check the rear crankshaft seal also.
While you are in there doing the DMF, pop a new clutch release bearing in. They have a shorter life than the clutch! You may want to weigh up the option of just sticking a new clutch in depending how old yours is. The big cost in the DMF at about £400 for the part. (Recently done mine).

Thought so..how long will it keep going for?
It only happened under heavy acceleration...which Is very rare as I like to drive like miss daisy!
Buypartsbuy have a dmf and clutch for £230ish which thought wasn't too bad!
Its just fitting...never done a clutch and jobs I do on cars are never straight forward!

The theory of the clutch and dmf change is basic. The guide someone here did is excellent. But the reality is that it's a b1tch of a job, none of the bolts will want to come off etc, etc... You can probably survive on the dmf a bit longer, though I don't know what damage it may incur if the DMF breaks properly. £230ish for clutch and DMF sounds very good, indeed. You could maybe buy the parts and ask a competent garage how much to fit. I think £800 (inc parts) is ball park for drive in/ drive out at a gearbox/clutch specialist.

I'd seen the Buypartsby price and called them last week to check that it's correct. It is. I also queried their note that it can only be used with the same make (LUK) clutch kit. The chap I spoke to didn't seem too sure of his facts, but both DMF and clutch kit are priced very competitively, so I think I'll take the plunge. The only thing they don't have in stock are the DMF bolt sets. They gave me a price of just under £4 for those, saying that they'd take about 2 weeks to get stock. £271 for the whole lot, delivered, is less than most places are charging for the DMF alone.

While it's out, I'm also very tempted to renew the cranshaft oil seal (the one behind the DMF) and do the 5th gear mod that Our Friends in Poland posted on here a while ago.

Crank Shaft oil seal is about £40 from Europarts (Not the cheap one at the other end of the crankshaft!) You'll also need a tube of snot to plaster around the lower half (follow what Fiat did before).

A dmf only has a little amount of play , if it is failing it will judder.
I reckon your input shaft oil seal on the gearbox is leaking, its a common fault and lets the clutch get all oily hence the slip.
Have a look for transmission oil around the bottom of the box and have a sniff of it , smells quite distinct compared to engine oil, did mine a few years ago and although it sounds stupid when you do it DOUBLE check you fit the clutch the right way round.
The shaft seal is cheap but its gonna need a 3 part clutch kit because of the leakage , you can check the play on the flywheel when the box is off Dont order one first .

Judder in what way?
I do have a little clutch judder depending on how I pull away...I try to lift off now with very little acceleration and that gives a judder free pull away.
Yes there is a small amount of gearbox oil on the outer casing but nothing to alarm..

The dmf is bonded together and when it fails the result is a total loss of drive so if your getting notable judder when pulling away its prob that, you can get various solid ones to replace the dual mass ones for other cars but dont think there is one for the multi.
Ive heard of people simply welding the 2 pieces together on mondeos but not sure how succesful that is.
The box oil you have on th outer case is prob the input shaft seal failing and the oil is contaminating the friction plate hence the slip.

have a look here

I changed mine and once it was off it was then i realised it was actually ok, was just the oil.
