My multi is basically eating the inner side of the rear tyres
Tracking was done 2 months ago and tyre pressure is ok
Since then had a noisy wheel bearing at back could that bearing is creating this wear on tyres? Or is something else? Thanks

The rear swing arm bearing is a known problem of Multi's, this can cause the wheel camber to change sufficiently that the outside edge rubs on the wheel arch liner.
Check the vertical alignment of the wheels, also search for rear wheel bearing on this forum, plenty of additional information.

Definately sound like rear swing/radius arm. Especially if the wheel seems to be leaning in at the top. I would think that running the wheels like this with excessive tyre wheel lean would knock the wheel bearings out aswell...

Yes i just noticed the wheels seem to be leaning a bit. One more than the other but tyres are not rubbing or scraping...just wearing the inside a little more. So looks like i need 2 of this swing radius arms and new wheel bearings...where i can get them cheap?

Hi

If you need the rear swingarm bearings doing, I did mine in situ about 2 months ago. I didn't need to remove the spring, shock or anything. As you would expect space is slightly limited, but far easier than taking everything off the swing arm. I posted a thread which is here https://www.fiatforum.com/multipla/284566-if-anyone-after-radius-arms.html about this. if you need anything specifically then just ask.

I got the swingarm bearing kit off ebay for £20 + postage, and the wheel bearing also from ebay for £30 + postage, with ABS ring, which was very good value, from this seller: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAVA-BRA...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5196756006
Fitting this was a doddle of a job, remove wheel and drum, bolt off and bolt on.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I would do both, however, only one of mine was at fault so I just did the one. If both had been at fault, then I would have obviously done both. Best of luck, and one point to note, when refitting the new bearing races, make sure they are both seated fully, as I had to re tighten my pivot bolt by a little a bit after a couple of weeks.

Mine are knackered too(wheels leaning in slightly) and one wheel bearing is humming.
I got the kits off ebay and intend doing them in situ next week.
Ive noticed that the wheel with the humming bearing doesnt hum if i lean/bank the car so the weight is on the other side of the car....anyon else experience this?? (a quick swerve and it momentarily disappears)
Im wondering if the camber is loading the bearing causing it to run tight and hence the hum.

Id like not to have to replace the bearing simply as im outta work = outta cash!!

Anyone else here who did their radius arms notice a quiet rear end afterwards??
Also is it possible to press a new bearing into the hub...the whole hub is a good bit more than a bearing.(i havent seen the hub in the flesh yet)

Cheers,
Marty

The coming and going of bearing noise as you load or unload the wheel when driving is typical of a failing bearing, so it's a sure sign that you're right in saying the bearing has had it. Probably not what you want to hear!

One thing I haven't seen is any service info for limits of rear wheel camber. It's not unusual for cars to be designed to have a certain amount so that the wheel tends to the upright position when it is 'leant on' in a corner. Even if there is service data available, actually measuring it on the car for most of us mere mortals would be a right bugger though.:(

Can you buy the bearing as a separate item form the hub? I've not seen them for sale anywhere (but that's not to say you can't get them!

Gotta do this job myself as garages will empty my bank account to do this...so i basically need 2 hubs with bearings and 2 radius arms. Are any special tools involved in this job and i dont really want to take springs and damper off...anybody got a guide on how to do this with some pics? I know is not a straightforward job and all bolts will be seazed i just never done it before and i wanna make sure i can do it before i start...thanks!

Hi

I've not seen a guide to do it in place that has photos, but I have seen a guide on how to replace the bearings with the arm off the car. I used this, with the work that I did to get it replaced in situ. I had no special tools, other than a lump hammer to remove the old bearing races, however I bought some all thread with big washers and nuts, with a matching sized socket, so that I could press the bearing races in, rather than having to hammer them in. They went in really easily with some grease on the fitting faces.

If I have to do the other side, I'll take photos and do a step by step guide on it, but that won't help you now.

Cheers

Hi

I was referring to the radius arm bearing, not the hub. The hub literally slid onto the stub axle, and compared to many jobs I've done, was a doddle.

Full credit to Simon who wrote the detailed account on the in-situ replacement, I didn't realise that someone has done it before. I would add that I didn't touch the shock or the anti roll bar. I used the shock as the pivot point when jacking under the spring seat on the arm, and I loaded the antil roll when levering the swingarm out of it's fitting.

I'm sure it will go okay for you, but prep your nuts with WD40 or something before hand, otherwise you'll be there with the blowtorch and stilsons for a while!

Thanks to all for the answers!
I dont know wethever im gonna fix car as now there is a bad knocking coming from front suspension aswell...i look at tyre and inner is heavily worn on front too!!! I think i spent enough money on it...anyone wants it?

Hi

It sounds like you've got a bit of a project there. If you are to sell the car, then stick it on the Classifieds section. It's always such a wrench when you decide enough is enough, but could it be that this is the last set of problems for a while? That's the gamble that makes car ownership all the more difficult.

PS If you are selling it, do you have a tow bar on it, and if you do, would you sell it me as I am local to you. I'm willing to remove it myself, and it would look better for sale without one to give the impression of an easier life!!

Cheers

Alternatively, IIRC Qinteq had a complete JTD with a knackered gearbox, might be worth looking at?
