Hi all,
I am thinking of tackling the timing belt change on our 2006 multijet eleganza this weekend and I found quite a few helful threads here which have not put me off yet!

One question though, do I need a set of Ribe sockets? Will torx do instead? What size of ribe or torx do i need. Also will I be able to lock the flywheel without a special tool? I also noticed someone refer to the need for new timimng bellt covers also - why would that be?

Local dealer wants €600 (approx £530) for t belt and water pump replacement!

Regards

Hi there,

Some of the fasteners are ribe on my 05 JTD so I guess yours will be the same. (Others were standard Allen key ones I think). I bought a set for ~£20 from Machine Mart that did the trick as ones from Halfords were too long and I could not get to all the fasteners.

I am pretty sure I just wedged the flywheel with a screwdriver after I took the little access plate off but I may be making that up. No need to a new timing cover I don't think. I took a risk and did not change the waterpump and so I am not sure how much of a challenge that will be as cam sprocket probably needs to come off.

The timing belt I bought had some index marks (stripes)on it and so it was fairly easy to fit once all the sprockets were also aligned with the machined timing marks as per the guides floating around. The only tip I have was that I found it a bit awkward to fit the belt by myself as it kept moving by one belt rib. In the end I packed the crank sprocket with cardboard to hold that firmly in position when feeding around all the other sprockets - worked a treat.

Have fun.

Many thanks for reply Mark,
Can I ask one more question of all you JTD /Multijet timing belt veterans:

What size Ribe sockets do I need?
I can buy two sets, M8 to M14 - 1/2 inch drive or M4 to M10 - 3/8 inch drive. I presume the crankshaft pulley bolts are the largest - are they bigger than M10?

With regards the ribe bolts , if you have a decent torx set then it should do the job, I used torx to remove the crank pulley without the need to lock the flywheel.

Hi all,
Just an update. I did the timing belt job today and it went ok. I did not do the water pump though. I was advised by Fiat Garage who quoted for job that they would normally judge condition of the water pump on the first timing belt change as they are not a normal source of problems. Mine felt tight and free and as I was a little uncertain about holding the camshaft sprocket to undo the nut and the correct torque on retightening, I left it alone. Tensioner and idler replaced of course - the idler had a bit of play.

The ABS microprocessor must be removed to gain access to the upper timing belt area in this multijet 120 model Its not that difficult once you get over the fear of opening those multi connectors. I used the RIBE sockets but they are not easy locate fully where the fasteners have corroded a little. Using Torx sockets although incorrect is easier except for the big one on the engine mount. Some of the timing cover fasteners are difficult to access so a range of torx/ribe holders / drivers might be needed.

Thanks to all for help on this and related threads (y)
