We have an ailing Multipla with 108,000 miles on the clock. On a journey to London, with the car fully loaded on a very hot day and pulling a trailer full of camping gear, the engine suddenly cut out and the injector warning light illuminated on the motorway. We were relayed to our campsite and got the car to a garage which diagnosed a problem with the exhaust gas temperature sensor (I think)! This was replaced at a cost of £220. On the way home the car failed again. :bang:

Not wanting to pour more money into a black hole, I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to the real cause of the problem! I noticed that before cutting out, the engine loses some power and judders a bit. It always starts again after 15 minutes or so cooling, but fails again quite quickly. Today I took it for a short local drive - this time it was minimally loaded and it was a cool day. Evenso, I tried to keep the engine as cool as possible by having the heaters fully on and all the windows open. Despite this, the same problem occured. Just as an extra, in each case the car was driven a distance with no problems, then stopped for 30 minutes to 2 hours - the car then started to fail on the second leg of each journey. Not sure if this is a clue or just coincidence.

Really hope someone has some ideas - we live in the middle of nowhere, and with 4 kids to ferry about, being without a car is tough!

Could be the crank position sensor, it tends to fail when hot then works again when cool.

It's cheap enough to replace even if only to eliminate it as the problem.

Thanks! Is that the same as the rpm sensor I've heard mentioned elsewhere?

Yes, it is. RPM sensor is a bit of an Americanism...

Check shop4parts to get a price, I think they're around the £20 - £30 mark.
