Hi, Welcome to the FF

First... never turn the engine by the camshaft because........ well you know now.

For the 8 valve JTD engine, the camshaft sprocket has a mark on it to line up with a pointer inside the cover.

There's a special tool to lock the crankshaft sprocket in position but if your new belt has the three lines marked on it, you may be able use the appropriate line and the crankshaft sprocket mark. The crankshaft sprocket goes in the position shown below but there is no mark on the cover (I painted the mark in the picture) so you would need to decide which is the appropriate line.

The third line on the belt is for the fuel pump of a non JTD engine. The JTD engine fuel pump is purely a high pressure pump and doesn't need to be timed.

It would be advisable to replace the fixed and automatic tensioners when replacing the belt. There is an adjustment procedure for setting the automatic tensioner.

Would also be a good idea to check for any signs of leakage from the water pump while you have the belt and cover off.

hi davren thanks so much for the help that s just what i needed to see i will give it a go tomorrow turning by hand first (y) from the bottom this time

Only turn it clockwise by the crankshaft sprocket nut, never anti-clockwise or the same problem may occur.

EDIT: Turn it gently and slowly, the crankshaft sprocket nut is a lefthand thread.
