fiat multipla Y Reg 1.6 petrol stalling at junctions

Hi to all, i am having a nightmare with this car, the car runs fine until you come to a stop and then it just dies, i was first diagnosed as a fine crack in the manifold so that was changed and was no different, then they said it was the MAF sensor so that was changed and it was no different, next they said it could be the timeing belt, so a whole new kit was put in and still no different, then they said the only thing it could possibly be was the throttle body so that was changed and still no different, so i took it to another garage and he said it was the CAT so that was replaced with the one off my other multipla and it is still no different, i have spent over £500 so far on trying to rectify this problem.... if you start the car up and just leave it running it will die after 4-5 minutes.... after all this work was done i decided to have a go myself, to me i thought it was a problem with fuel getting through because when it starts dieing if you put your foot on the accelerator it feels as if the car is flooding, so what i done was moved the pin down on the plastic casing around the accelerator cable so it put revs up to just under 1000rpm and i drove this car for over a week with no problems what so ever but it then went back to stalling again.......
H E L P Please

when it stalls if you can, then jump out the car and pull out the petrol filler cap, if you hear a rush of air please let me know i had the same problems and found a free easy fix...

strange that you say that, because a few times when ive had the bonnet up and it stalls you do get a noise like a rush of air or suction!

next time it stalls pull the petrol cap out to see if there is a rush of air and let me know, the rush of air under the bonnet could be any number of things try the filler cap first

no problem i will test it this morning and let you know.... cheers... darren

tested this morning and definately a noise from the fuel tank, sounds a bit like an aeroplane reversing its engines... dont know if this is what you mean.... thanks

yes that is what i mean when you pull the fuel cap off did the car start straight away, how mechanically minded are you?

it normally takes a couple of turns of the key to get it started again but if you leave it for 10-15 seconds it fires off the first turn..... cheers

right here is what to do, jack the rear of the car up, and support it, slide under the drivers side rear and you will see the fuel tank, there are two bars going across the tank just take the two bolts out that you can see, this will allow the tank to drop down, but hold it as it comes down, when you look on top of the tank you will see a pipe joined to a nipple disconnect this and blow up it, DO NOT SUCK the petrol fumes will not do you any good, now tape that pipe down on the top of the tank but do not reconnect and dont cover the hole, now put everything back on the car and test it, this should solve the problem. the pipe is one of the tanks breathers but if it is not functioning correctly the tank will not get enough air to push the fuel through the system causing it to cut out.. this should solve the problem it did on mine. if this solves your problem it means your breather unit is not working now i have not replaced mine yet and have had no problems with how it is driving and its been like it for near on a year..

If the breather pipe on top of the tank is not connected to anything, you're going to get a bit of fuel sloshing out of it aren't you
Surely it'd be better to put another length of hose on it, or clear the original?

The filler cap should be vented, I know they can sometimes get blocked.

when i did mine it was fine i got no petrol coming out or anything it really worked a treat, if it works i suggest that the filler cap breathers are replaced

went to fire the car up this morining to get it on the ramps to take the tank off but it just would not fire, checked about a bit and the fuel is definately not getting through at all now.... could this be the same problem with the tank or could it be the fuel pump.... does anybody know where the fuel pump is located on the car, is it at the back left hand corner under the bonnet its got a couple of pipes coming off it..... could the fuel pump have caused this problem from the start, if this is the part im thinking of i will replace tomorrow off my old multipla........ thanks in advance.... darren

when you turn the ignition and get all the dash lights can you hear a whirring sound from underneath the car this is the fuel pump priming, also it could be an airlock, where your ht leads are connected to the coil pack just below it on the engine block is a round cap you can unscrew, if you unscrew this and press the internal pin in with something with the engine off you should get a trickle of fuel or if air comes out keep pressing it in until the air stops and fuel comes out then try and turn her over again

Hi shaun, when i turn the key there is no whirring noise but i do know the noise you mean, preseed that nozzle until fuel came out but it still wont fire, where is the fuel pump on these..... cheers

the fuel pump is in the fuel tank you have to take the fuel tank off and its in the middle on top of the tank, not completely sure of the assembly but if you click peats link it shows the assembly details

i will take the tank off tomorrow and have a look, messed about a bit today but still no fuel coming through.... thanks for your help... i will update tomorrow.

i was going to tow this with my jeep and try and bump it (just an idea) but realised i dont have a towing eye, went down to the scrappy this morning and all the fiat ones i can find are male fitting and i need female, cant find any on ebay etc, any ideas where i can get one or if another car has the same one.... thanks.... darren

hmm pass on that one, probably fiat! but if your bumping it then just tie the rope down one side of the radiator but double check there are no pipes in the way, i towed my multi 5 miles like that and had no probs
