Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Hi, newbie here with a problem

I have just bought an 05 plate Multipla 1.9JTD eleganza and on delivery and first drive it squeals like a stuck pig! Shes got 38000 miles on her

It sounds a bit like a belt slipping but only does it under load. I suspected the turbo. I returned the car to the independant dealer and they have had a 'technician' look at it and so far they have said it is the turbo but is normal. I have had plenty of turbos, both petrol and diesel and i have never had a turbo sound like this before.

On arrival to the dealer the owner was outside and said he heard the noise and would get someone to look at it. They used to be a main dealer but not anymore, he has been selling fiats for years so has some experience of them but didnt say at that time that the noise was 'normal'

Anyone else have/had a noisy turbo. I havent driven another fiat before so dont have any experience of them.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards
Scott

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Mine is a 06 1.9jtd multijet and it makes no noise worth talking aboutThe noise you describe is not normal for your engineYou would have been better off buying my nice 06 with only 24k on the clock

Shame on my poor selling attemptsCan't help it

Sounds like the cambelt pulley is about to go pop run away unless its deff sorted, it could well be the aux belt pulley as they seem to fail .
Has the car been laid up on the forecourt for a while?.

Sorry just re read if you have bought it and it is the pulley it does need toing asap as the engine will be scrap if it goes , a simple top end re build will only last about 3-4 months when the engines let go you have to re build the bottom end as well, id not drive it without making sure you know where this noise is coming from.

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Thanks for the info people. I have got the car back today after much angry and cross words with the garage.

They 'removed and cleaned the actutor and other associated bits, cant think of the names at the moment....

ITs nice and turbo sounding now and not screechy and scary sounding! Funny how one day they say its meant to sound like that and the next they remove the thing and do it properly.

I am still going to get the actuator settings checked as i have a sneaky suspicion they mave have turned it down a bit?

As for buying the 06 plate, thanks but would have been over my price bracket as i paid more than i wanted to for this one! I struggled to find a 'straight' one!

thanks again for the help,

i will be hanging around here a bit more now but im still weaning myself off my old car forum...

Glad its the actuator , never heard one making that sound though.
The belts are due at the age and miles though, not by fiats list but by what everyone does to be on the safe side.

That was my next question actually as it has a removable tow hitch fitted which would shorten the life span of belts etc.

Not even had a chance to look through the service book yet to find this info as ive been too busy trying to get my other car MOT work done and sold on etc etc

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Since getting the car back i find it quite sluggish up to around 2500rpm, once she gets on to 3000 then she pulls quite well but this is of course at the wrong end of teh rev range really. Its got so much lag, is this normal for one of these?

Thanks people

No, something is well wrong there, the JTD pulls very strongly from 1500rpm which is where it generates maximum torque. I would suspect MAF sensor or EGR valve but I'm only guessing really. I just cleaned my EGR (probably the most awkward job I have ever done) after 47K miles and it pulls strongly now from idle!

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

The actuator has a lot to do with when the turbo kicks so maybe they have not set it up right.
You can adjust them.

Is a failure of the pulleys or belts on the JTD engine as serious as you make out?
Thought it was just cambelt failure that would necessitate an engine rebuild.

I'm no expert on this but could you tell me what the big serpentine belt powers? I would imagine water pump, alternator and power steering? Might get mine checked as its a bit rattly on tickover and when I'm on full lock.

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

No the aux drive belt is fine to go all beit with no power steering, its just the cambelt but both the cambelt and aux belt pulleys can go hence the emphasis on finding where its coming from.
If the rattling is from the bottom crank pulley it could cause probs for the cambelt but it would have to wear through the belt cover.
I sometimes forget im running mine without cambelt covers so if my aux belt went then it would take the cambelt with it im keeping an eye on a small oil leek on the camshaft seal but think its fixed itself.

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Water pump is on the cambelt unfortunatley but the aircon is on the aux belt.
Its the tensioner and idler pulleys on the cambelt that go , i took mine off the road to do the clutch and i was going to do the belt anyway but when i removed the cambelt idler and tensioner both pulleys had seized solid , if i had not replaced them it would have been game over.

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

I got a new cambelt, tensioners and pulleys done before purchasing so hopefully should be fine for a good while.

Thanks for the offer of the ARB bushes the other day BTW

Re: Noisy turbo on 05 multipla

Sorry Eddie you miss understood, i had the old anti roll bar off mine as i had replaced it. i thought your prob gonna replace the bushes at some point as people seem to be making headway with poly bushes so you could have built up the new bar off the car.
I was actually building a footing for my front wall on the house and was going to stick it in the concrete to add strength.

I changed my mined though so if you need/want it then its here.
