Door Stay

The driver door on my 03 115 ELX JTD won't stay open at either of the 2 stay points. The metal arm that holds it in place doesn't seem to be working; and there is some cracking sounds.

Is this a do-able DIY job or does the door have to be dismantled?

Thanks

Re: Door Stay

hi here is how i did it.first you take the plastic cover from speaker then you unscrew the speaker .the speaker has a connector ,you have to take it out.next you unscrew the plastic door cover, it has two screws behind 2 plastic round things.next the door handle 2 little screws ,you can see them if you look under the door handle after that the little thing that shows you when the door is closed or open .with that thing up you have to pull that red thing out a little bit ,then you can pull it out .next the door cover .you put your hand in the speaker hole and pull slowly along the cover, careful it breaks easy.now you unscrew the screw that is on the carbody and then the 2 screws that is behind that rubber on the door then you take it out through the speaker hole .then you put everything back together ,dont forget something .i hope that helps. sorry for my english

Re: Door Stay

OK Sicone, I'm going to give it a try. But does this fix the 2 stay points so the door remains ajar?

Re: Door Stay

I think sicones' (very well written!) guide is just telling us how to get at the bit that will be causing the problem. Once you've got it out of the door, you'll be able to have a look at it and decide whether to a)do something to it to make it work again, or b)go and by a new one because the original's completely knackered!

Re: Door Stay

I think you're right. I have no idea how it works. Same thing happened on my Punto several years back...very annoying. Does anyone know if there is an exploded diagram of the Multipla door anywhere?

Cheers

Re: Door Stay

Cheers Sicone. It's like a metal rib that sticks through a rubber gaiter in the door. I think it has notches on that get caught in 2 places making the door hold open. Will have to do some research I think. By the way your English is absolutely fine.

Re: Door Stay

I prefer a few drops of oil on the door straps every month as using grease collects dust/grit & makes them squeak

Re: Door Stay

you can use oil but i dont think oil lubricates so good as grease does and so much dust or other things dont get there so easy but do as you please

Re: Door Stay

An aerosol of non-sticky motorcycle chain grease does the job nicely.

Re: Door Stay

There are some new Multipla door stays listed on ebay ATM. As usual, I've no connection with the seller (i just keep an eye out for the occasional bargain bit that comes up!) and I noticed the door stays this evening. Do a search for 'Multipla Check Strap'. They're £20 + £3.50 P+P. I don't know how that compares to dealer prices.

The picture from the Fiat parts book that's on the auction page may come in handy too.
