fed up with washed out grey

I realise this isnt a 'problem' unique to multi's but I'm pee'd off with the plastic bumpers on my 2000 JTD continually going from the new look charcoal grey to a washed out patchy light grey.Makes the old girl look even older!!
I've tried all the accessory shops 'back to black' type sprays and all work fine .....untill it rains. Does anyone have any tips on making the 'new look' last more than a week at best?
Cheers in advance.

Re: fed up with washed out grey

Hi mate,

Sounds drastic, but use a heat gun on them.... brings them back to like new and lasts for ages. You have to be careful not to melt them though....waft it over them, and you will see them change to black (dont concentrate on one spot)

Also... AutoGlym Bumper care is very good...last a lot longer than those back to black type sprays. You need to rub it in though which takes more time, but a much more professional finish that dosent attract dust and fade when it rains.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks Alan,
I have a heat gun and will give it a go just as soon as the latest back to black treatment wears off.....not long then lol.

Peanut butter - better than back to black type stuff apparently but i've yet to try it as the kids keep eating it!

How someone found this out I don't know - oh and the smooth stuff would probably be better than the crunchy.

Re: fed up with washed out grey

Most types of oil will last well. Olive Oil, in particular adheres well and lasts for ages, since it's reasonably gloopy. Basic vegetable oil is okay as well. Just try a discrete area first.

And of course, keep away from seals, since oil + rubber don't mix very well....

Peanut butter????????.....LOL,think I'll check into rehab before I start smearing peanut butter on the old girl.(And yes...just how did someone get to the point where they tried it? The mind boggles)....Seriously though thanks for the suggestions,I'm gonna try them all(including peanut butter...smooth....while the neighbours arent looking) and report back on the relative effectiveness of each!!

Re: fed up with washed out grey

Hi All,
First post on the Multipla forum, I have the same problem on my wife's multipla, I have tried the Baby Oil and it did look much better than before But after 3 days of rain the bumpers looked patchy.
Next I will try the Olive oil (should work seeing as they both come from Italy) But I really do think the Peanut Butter method is a wind up, I think if I do try this then it will be done after dark, I just know the neighbors will think I have flipped if they see me rubbing peanut butter on to the bumpers.
I am loath to try the heat gun, I can see the bumpers sagging as I do it

Re: fed up with washed out grey

On my last Multi, using an old rag, I wiped on a mixture of engine oil and diesel on a weekly basis. Worked ok and was cheap.

Sometimes I wore rubber gloves, but mostly not. Maybe my hands will drop off....

I've used a heat gun before, it really does work, as stated by a1ant though, hold the gun way back and slowly work the surface, you can see when it is working and the lasting effect is longer term.

I believe though that you should never do this to renaults, its supposed to ruin the bumpers!!
