Air Con not working

Hello

We've taken our Multipla in for it's air-con to be serviced - light in the switch comes on, but no reduction in air temp.

Apparently the 'receiver-dryer' (?) has gone, and is circa £150 to be replaced, plus further £50 for the gas.

Apparently also, this component is supposed to be replaced every 'couple of years', but it's not mentioned anywhere in the service booklet, nor do I have a clue what it does. I thought air-con was just a compressor; a radiator/condensor; and a couple of pipes. But then again, I'm no engineer.

Before I comit to the repair, could someone out there with working air-con let me know whether they think it's worth it? I had heard a rumour that even when working, the air con isn't much good anyway.

Thanks

Oh, and if anyone can explain what a reciever-dryer does, I'd be quite interested.

If it makes any difference, ours is a 2002 JTD with climate control.

Re: Air Con not working

Moisture, even very little, will totally ruin any AC, so the receiver/dryer will take out any moisture that is in the system, moisture comes from the air outside, and definitely will get inside.
After a certain amount of time, the dryer is "full", so it will not do what it is supposed to do, and has to be replaced.
Every time, any AC is opened for service or repair, the receiver/dryer should be replaced with a new one.
Have your system repaired, it's worth it!
