Think I have got a duff washer pump, have done all the usual to check but to no avail. (Pump still sounds like its working).
How easy is it to replace the pump as it looks like a real pig of a job due to the location.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I had a problem with the washer pump when I got my first Multipla, about 2 years ago. As I remember, it's fairly easy to get to, once you've jacked up the car, removed the offside front wheel and arch liner (!).
There are 2 pumps attached to the bottom of the screenwash water bottle.
1 pump is for the headlight washer, the other pump is for the front and rear screen washers. This second pump is quite ingenious in that it whirrs one way to wash the front screen, and whirrs the other way to wash the rear. This is done by the pump having 2 outlets and valves on those outlets, that open or close depending which way the impeller rotates.
The pumps are push fits into rubber bungs on the bottle. If your pump is whirring away it's probably a bunged up valve or blocked tubing. Probably worth taking the pump off and cleaning it- a replacement would probably be costly.

Thanks for the advice, I can pump water using a bike pump to the rear washer jet by disconnecting the pipe and pumping air down the pipe (bypassing the pump completely) so as you say it does sound like the pump may be blocked. I cant check the front washers this way as I cant get my hand down to remove the pipe from the pump.
I will get the wheel etc off at the weekend to see if I can clean the pump.

How did you get on with your washers?
My rear washer hasn't worked since I bought it (3 weeks ago). I have proved that the pump is ok (switched the front and rear pipes and it worked) and that the nozzles aren't blocked. I have tried to pump air using a bike pump from the pump end to the nozzle end but nothing happens!

Does anyone know if there are non-return valves in the washer pipework (there were in an old Fiesta I had years ago)? Or, the route that the pipework takes from the front to the back?

PS - my multi is an ELX with the driving lights in the bumper. If you remove the offside light you can access the pump without having to remove the drivers side front wheel! 2 screws below the lamp and one through the bezel in the upper part of the surround.

Any help gratefully received!

Hi all,

Don't know if this will help, but I had a problem with the rear washer on my 04 multi a few weeks ago.

I managed to prove the pump was working fine, but just wasn't getting any water being sprayed onto the rear window.

Turned out to be that the pipe had come away from the mechanism that contains the jet.

It was a fairly easy fix, if a little fiddly.

Had to remove the 'door card' from the tail gate, then loosen or remove the bolts that held the rear wiper motor in place.

This just about gave me enough space to push the pipe back into the hole that feeds the rear jet. Slightly annoying that it is just a push fit, so no doubt I will have the same problem in the future, but I guess you could use a smal blob of glue or silicon to hold the pipe in place.

A fairly easy fix, but fiddly.

Well after spending a day removing the wheel, arch liner and pump i found that the pump was completely shot (still turning but not pumping) I ordered a replacement only to have the car written off in an accident the day before I was going to change it. So it was a lesson in sods law!
 
OK, I've sorted it. Removed the main beam lamp assembly from the drivers side and behind there you can see the routing for the pipework for the rear washer disappearing into a grommet. Before the grommet is a small plastic connector which turns out to be a non-return valve to stop the liquid draining back into the washer bottle. This had stopped working; couldn't pass anything in either direction. Drilled out the internals with a 3.5mm drill and refitted to the pipework.
Hey presto, working washers!
 
FYI: To access the washer bottle/pumps: Undo the offside main headlamp accessed from the engine compartment (3 x 10mm bolts: 1 NS of headlamp, 1 OS top of headlamp, 1 OS of headlamp, accessed by taking out the OS indicator. To remove the indicator pull on a wire ring connected to the back of the indicator inside the OS front wing). No need to disconnect the electrical connectors from the headlamp, just push the headlamp to one side away from the washer bottle/pump.

To detach the washer pump put your fingers under the bottom of the pump and slide it up off the washer bottle. NOTE: If there is any water in the washer bottle it will all run out when you detach the pump. An electrical connector and 2 tubes to disconnect from the washer pump.

This method avoids having to remove the OS wheelarch liner to access the washer pump.

'Blocked' front washers may be a due to the 'Y' one-way valve under the plastic cover at the base of the windscreen. It can be taken apart to remove the bit of rubber that acts as a one-way valve and eventually blocks the thing completely. The hardest part is removing the wipers which needs a heavy-duty puller if they haven't been off for a while.
