I am probably being a numpty with this question but here goes - we've just taken ownership of a 1.6 ELX Multipla and while I was looking around underneath I was surprised to see a 3 box exhaust and no catalytic converter!

Worried that th ewrong exhaust had been fitted I went back to the garage who sold it to me and looked at some other Multiplas and while I could clearly see the cats on the diesel cars, I couln't see them on any of the petrol multiplas.

I thought it might be out of sight up behind the engine but as I can see the Lambda sensor (which I think is supposed to be in front of the cat) I am a bit puzzled as to what is going on. Can anyone enlighten me?

it's there alright. surely the mechanics would've seen it!
it must be on of the 3 boxes!

I have since looked at Fiats parts list for this car and have discovered that the catalytic converter is part of the exhaust. Note prospective purchasers that the exhaust and cat are a single unit made of mild steel ie £400+ bill every 3 years when the exhaust is changed! Well done Fiat.

Fiat should be able to supply a cut-shut exhaust. The orignal exhaust is designed for ease of fitting at facory and no possble leak. Just like the puntos, mk2-mk3 you can just be a part of the exhaust and replace that.( e.g backbox). The old exhaust is then cut at certain point and the exhaust fit onto the old one.. Or Should Do !!!!!!
