My 2000 1.6 ELX has been great, but I've got a weird problem that started a few hundred miles ago when the car refused to start after a 150-mile trip (wife was alone in the middle of Bodmin moor with our 2 toddlers !!)
She called me and from her description of the problem it sounded like fuel starvation. On a hunch I asked to remove and replace the fuel cap .. hey presto, car is off again. Now we regularly have to go through this procedure, sometimes after a couple of hundred miles, sometimes after 10. Each time we're greeted by a lot of released (or maybe inbound) air and gurgling from the tank.
Fiat dealer wants over £60 to even discuss it ("Needs diagnostics sir"), but I suspect either a faulty filler cap keeping the tank at too high a pressure, or a trapped vent pipe trapping a vacuum in the tank.
Does anyone have experience of a problem like this ?
