Ok, before more established members get huffy `what's this newbie owner on about?' First Impressions are just that; once you get used to a car, they're not possible. So; previous car was a Citroen 3 litre petrol engined V6 `Exclusive' Auto Estate which I'd owned for 3 years and used as my regular car. Last drive in it was from Kirriemuir to Chester, where I left it for its new owner and picked up the Multipla. This I drove from Chester to just outside Stoke, then two days later after a little local driving, back to Kirriemuir. Total distance driven in the Multipla; just over 533 miles.

First impressions are that these are excellent cars. Their width is nothing like the problem some people claim; in fact the reletivly short wheelbase means you can turn in closer on left hand bends than on longer `standard width' cars. The 105 JTD* engine is maybe a tad underpowered, but I've a feeling that new air and fuel filters could help this. As it is, motorway cruising at an indicated 80 mph is fine. With 3 adults plus luggage, indicated 90 seems about it's maximum in 5th. Maybe possible to go faster in 4th, but I'm not used to the engine and without a rev counter**, don't want to push it. It's a VERY quiet running diesel; once cruising there's not enough engine noise to hear what it's doing. It's very comfortable; good precise steering and lots of space and storage cubyholes. Aircon, switchable from Auto to Manual is about as good as it gets:D . Build quality is fine, but the plastic used for the doorpulls seems porous, it's quite grubby and pockmarked on mine; I'm not sure yet how well it will clean up. Sound system; very good indeed:p. You can even alter the loudness control `roll off' frequency; a facility usually only found on top quality home Hi-Fi . As sold originally it had a radio/cassette player plus a CD multichanger under the front LH passenger seat, but some hound has taken the CD player out***. Lights are incredible; the high level `high beams' are very bright; forgetting to dip them really will cause problems for oncoming drivers trying to see where they're going! I could go on about general ease of use and quick familiarity, but for first impressions, this really is a well designed MPV that's easy to use and fun to drive. Well Done Fiat.

*As far as I know, the JTD engines used on the Multipla are all 1910cc but vary on power depending on designation; 105, 110 or 115. Does anyone know how this is achieved, and whether it's possible to increase the power of the 105 without overloading anything? Do the tuning chips sold on Ebay offer any real advantages?
**Did the later models (110 and 115) have rev counters fitted in the speedometer housing? If so, can the whole unit be swopped over to a 105 model like mine? Are the necessary engine hookups for rev counter etc. there? It would be nice to have a temperature guage as well as a warning light (which by definition only comes on when the engine is already too hot)
***What are the chances of obtaining, and how much would I have to pay for, a replacement CD changer?

I wouldn't bother with ebay chips as they tend to have little or no effect, What you need is a remap from a specialist company like Angel tuning. This will effect the length of life of your clutch etc though.

My 110jtd has a rev counter, I would have thought you should be able to swap units over.

Most of the Multiplas i have seen either have the cassette head unit or the cd head unit. Not seen many with the cd changer.

Thanks Gary,

I guess it makes sense to get used to the car before thinking about changing anything; if the only difference between the 105, 110 and 115 is in the engine management software, an upgrade later maybe makes sense. What I was concerned about was mechanical differences, valve timing/overlap etc. I like the idea of a rev counter but thanks to some pratt in a supermarket car park leaving a crease across the nearside rear door less than an hour after I taxed it, changes like that have to be low on my priorities for now:mad:. It's only a shallow crease, but long (double:mad:  ). A friend of mine works in the local garage body shop; I'll see what kind of £££ is involved tomorrow, then decide whether to go through the insurance. This car has a cassette head unit, but the empty box that housed the CD changer is under the passenger seat. The sellers description (he's an established trader in Chester with a good reputation) said radio/cd player so although the car's been paid for, the fact that I paid his asking price (cash, no trade in) gives me some arguing room. He did say the stereo didn't seem to work properly (only problem I found was the radio face wasn't properly fitted); chances are he thought the CD player was in place but not working. The annoying thing is that a couple of weeks ago, someone on this forum was selling one plus a tow bar for £100 through the classifieds. At that time I didn't know I'd be needing one~~~~~ Jim.

Hi Jim
Glad you like the car so much they really are good fun.
shame it managed to get creased so soon, if its any help at all i live 10 mins from chester if theres anything i can do pm me, we do have a 10 disc changer in ours and i think a mate of mine has one out of vehicle (i will enquire if he wants to Sell/ give away I have seen a few on ebay over the last few months its worth looking at.
as for performance fuel /air filter make a differance when changed.

I was considering angel tuning ours but having changed our maf sensor and keeping on top of filters it really does fly(ours is a 110 )its not my daily drive and its plenty enough for mrs andy,
Keep an eye on front tyre wear or if its got good rubber on now check the tracking is at "zero" otherwise it will scrub off the inner edges.

have fun!!
Andy

Hi Andy,

They are indeed fun. I had a look at the crease in the cold light of day; it's much better than I first thought. Neither the lacquer nor the paint was cut into. The scratches are really just on the surface; a couple are through the paint but the metal isn't damaged. Opinion of the guy in the paint shop is "get a `touch up' kit from Fiat" and he'll help me with a bit of primer if needed. Can't be bad............... Thanks for the offer of help regarding the seller in Chester; worst case scenario is he tells me to `go away' which in all honesty is unlikely; the car was advertised as having `radio/CD', which I thought meant a single slot CD player in the radio. I would in fact have preferred what I have; a radio cassette player with the facility to run a CD changer. If your mate would be prepared to part up with the one he has I'd be very interested. Was it working when he took it out? I'm OK with mechanical stuff (got my own small workshop repairing clocks and musical boxes) but electronics are a closed book.

Don't know what colour your Multi is, but there is a silver one being broken on ebay at the moment.

Thanks again Gary,

Mine is described as `Metallic Orange' but it's nearer a copper/bronze colour. Swoping body panels is always a last resort; trying to get everything to line up on a panel that `looks right but isn't quite' can really turn a good mood bad, but luckily the damage on my Multipla is well within decent repair range. Going back to my first question about tuning, the paint shop guy is also a bit of a car fanatic; done some amazing tune-up jobs in the past. He pretty much confirmed what you said about re-mapping, but said that some of the add-on electronic kits for diesel engines really are good. Not necessarily the ones sold on Ebay, but buying direct from the makers they get the seemingly impossible result of increased power + increased economy. Sounds like voodoo to me, but if it works....................Jim.

My 2000 multipla came without a CD player, the standard unit has a connector for a Blaupunkt CD changer, fitted either under the passenger front seat or in the boot. I got mine form bluespot.co.uk, they were doing a cheap deal at the time but it's no longer available (look for old stock or on ebay). The model code is either the CDC-A08 or the later CDC-A03. Both come with the 5m connection cable to the connector at the back of the radio/cassette unit. Lots of fun routing that neatly.
