500X Casper 3.0 - Guess Who's back in the Fiat Fold

Introduction

Thats right lads and lasses.

The Mito has gone and i'm back. :)

Picked up the 2.0 4x4 500X last week.

And no i'm not pregnant as i was asked 3 times on the day i picked it up and nor is it a family car.

I actually love it, its so comfy to drive.
I'm definitely not pregnant, if I am it would be a medical miracle and I would now be in a Circus freak show... lol

Hey Guys
It's been a while, I've just come in from giving her the first proper bath of the year. Needless to say she's so much bigger than the mito was I'm knackered

She remains a dream to drive although I don't drive her nearly as much now due to a change of job 5 weeks after I bought her, so I commute on the train.

Only niggles remains the MPG, I've been trying to get it Into the dealer since January but every time the drop off driver has an issue and it has to be rebooked.

No matter what I do I can't get that mpg over 36 ish. This includes a 6 hour drive on the motorway, 3 times!

My 2.4 petrol normally does 33 on the highway, or 34-35, when the moon is in the right phase. Never been able to squeeze anything more than that. It seems your 2.0 diesel is quite a heavy drinker, too. My sympathies. From what I hear about these cars, the fuel economy is not their strongest suit.

I have an AT9 cross 4wd, 2.5k miles in. If i did 6 hrs on the motorway id average around 40-45mpg depending on the speed. In very slow traffic its drops off a lot, can be as low as 20 with S/S turned off for short trips of 2-3 miles.

I'm averaging about 39 at the mo so your not far off. Like my last diesel fiat I think it'll improve over time, maybe to as high as the mid 40's when properly run in.

You should get better than that, I got the same model (2015) and I happily get 45 on a run, with a PB of nearly 52

I'll give a bit of detail over my 39mpg ave, I get the feeling it may just be due to your typical driving routes.

This is about what I'm seeing at the moment (remember it's winter so expect some dropoff vs the average.
1) 4Hr drive, bit of traffic, mainly motorway, lots of 75mph driving 45mpg.
2) 4Hr drive, bit of traffic, mainly motorway, lots of 80mph driving 42mpg.
3) Short 2-3 mile trips with SS off, lot of traffic lights and traffic. 20mpg.
4) 12 mile round trip, SS off, some traffic, maybe 8 miles of the 12 in 40-50mph zones, 40mpg.
4) 10 mile round trip, less traffic than 3) but more 30-40mph zones. 35 mpg.

So it may all depend on what trips (on average) you are doing.

The optimal (sweet spot) band for fuel economy imo is constant driving at say 55-65mph. The AT9 is in 9th gear pulling circa 1500-1750rpm. I reckon if i was ever on a long run at this speed I'd get somewhere around 50mpg.

My AT9 never switches to the 9th on that speed, 8th max. In my case, the 9th needs 75-80 mph to kick in.

I have the AT9 2lt. Drops into 9th at 60mph. Will even hold this on level road down to 55mph. Combined 37mpg over 6000 miles.
Previous car was a Mercedes c220 Sport that averaged 47mpg. Over similar distance.
Think it’s the 4X4 drive train that pull the mpg down?

The mpg should improve with a slightly higher mileage and warmer weather. I achieve significantly better than that, but most of my driving is A roads or MWays

Could be the engine difference. 2.4 is an entirely different animal, after all. But I'm no expert on that.

It is my understanding that, unless engaged, the AWD shouldn't affect the fuel economy. But I could be wrong.

Due to the lack of torque, I think the 2.0 mjd is about 50% higher.

Mine changes up to 9th at 56mph on the flat, then if i coast it drops down to 8th at about 50mph.

If i remember correctly the auto and 4wd adds around 175kgs with the auto being about 100kg of this. So the 4wd on its own is about the same as carrying an extra adult passenger.

If 4wd is engaged fuel consumption will drop, in part due to their being more moving parts, and in turn more friction..... and heat.

Digressing slightly. I think I remember reading the AT9 is a popular choice for new models from other makers e.g. the LR Evoque/ Jaguar e-pace because it's relatively compact and light vs other auto's.
