Panda (Classic) I'm Back With The Panda 750L 1991

Introduction

My Story

Hi folks, its been a while since I had a panda after selling Purple Haze the Parade and Engelbert the Sisley (to Freebo ) the former I sold because my wife was pregnant and I felt (wrongly) that I needed a bigger (and to my mind at the time safer) car for ferrying my son and wife around in.

A very short while after I sold the pandas I developed Generalised Anxiety Disorder, I have had it now for nearly 2 years and I am FINALLY starting to get better it seems. The paranoid thoughts that I was going to put my son and wife in danger in the panda were part of this in my opinion.

Selling the Parade was a huge mistake on my part (and as older forum members were know it was subsequently written off in a low speed crash by the new owner) though the Sisley is much better off with Freebo as he appreciates the 4x4's (they are not to my taste on the open road but are amazing in a field IMHO) and I have regretted it. I have not had a car for some time now partially due to my illness and partially due to the fact I have lost my job due to my illness, though as forum members will remember I am a Youtuber too.

Fast forward to last night and I was browsing the forum and I came across an ad for a 750L in Glasgow (I am in Prestwick), and it was free but had to be collected today or in 2 weeks time. Being the impatient (and obviously anxious) type, I arranged through a friend of a friend to have it collected today. It arrived at 1pm and I am utterly flabbergasted at the condition. Out of my 3 Pandas it arrived in the best condition IMHO. So I am very thankful to the seller but forgotten their forum name cos the ad has been deleted! So thanks Ian (I am sure you are reading)

Ian reported that it has an oil leak under pressure, and as far as I can tell so far the problem is the oil filter housing which would be a super easy fix :) the rear arches need cut out at the base and refabricated, though this is not a huge job to my knowledge and I have a friend who is potentially going to do that for me all being well. Aside from that as far as I can tell it just needs new seatbelts, a new passenger rear brake cluster, new door locks, the front seat cover sewed up or renewed (the rest is immaculate) and some rust spots in the usual places taken care of. And a good service just to be on the safe side!

I couldn't be happier at this point and I cant wait to share my progress on here and Youtube for you all to see :)

Cameron

Once again the earth cable on the starter is the problem, it was sparking when turning the key so isnt providing a strong earth it seems. Had the same problem with the sisley and its a complete ball ache. For now ive managed to loosen the bolt a touch and slathered the connector with copper grease but doubt that will be good enough. Trying to tighten it up again but its almost like its on threaded cos its barely moving with all my strength :(

Someone tell me what it is im missing here cos i cannot work out why it was starting fine up till this morning

When moving my car out today I tried 2 of the four keys it came with (seperate from the little fuel cap keys) and one of them operated all locks, the other operated the drivers door and boot... maybe not too secure, still I'll be wiring in an immobiliser switch at some point!

Sorry to hear you've had an issue with yours, fingers crossed it's just a dodgy earth and then all sorted, strange it happened after stalling but not when you initially fired the car up, could it be worse when the engine is warmed up?

I assume changing the shocks is dead easy as I had the whole axle off mine and fitted with new shocks, springs and trailing arms and that was all remarkably simple stuff, plus there is a guide on here I think? Been looking at the timing belt guide, a challenge I am looking forward to and worrying about pretty well equally!

I want to change the timing belt too, scary stuff!

Research is the way forward. Do it twice in your head before commiting spanner to metal i guess

Ok mate try this jump lead from negative - terminal battery to body of starter or metal work in close proximity. Try again
If stater run you've a bad earth
Next try jump lead from positive + direct to starter terminal be afraid very afraid. don't leave in gear don't have ignition on you may have sparks starter should turn. If not
Spanners hammers *******loks
***k ***t Fixed. There you go

Its now running since i copper greased the negative connector on the starter

Can you explain how it becomes a bad earth exactly please? I just want to fully understand this

Ok it's corrosion between the 2 faces of the earth either at body / engine gearbox connecting small
Or the direct connection to the battery and starter. This is caused when a large amount of current ( amps flow ) to turn the engine heating the oxides (green fluffy or white powdery ) between the connections. Caused by salt air/ water mix , this in turn burns creating a poor connection which then gets hotter and even more current flow creating , resistance until it fails , shorting with jump leads locates the fault . So remove the battery clean all power connections including posts with 240 grit paper or similar till copper is clean ,tighten
Pow. Bingo zoom yes yes it's done.

Beer!

Cool thanks so much! I get it now

Cameron be sure to check the negative battery lead where it runs up the bulk head in the engine bay as well, if this has rubbed through to the inner metal core it could be causing your starter issue intermittently, this is a common Panda fault also. Keep up the good work it's good to see the forum alive with new updates from various people recently :)

Cameron.

How do you have time to post and spanner at the same time.
Your phone must be glued to your chest like a go pro.
I look at the forum and nearly every hour or two there is a post of updates.
At the rate you are going we will all be sending our Pandas up to Argyllshire or at least I will.
I might get it back finished for Easter!
How big a cheque do you need?

Dave

Thanks Andy, the rest of the cable seems ok but thanks for the tip!

Atm changed one shock absorber but the bottom bolt on the other side is stuck on and rounded off. Will shift it soon hopefully

Would advise sending to Ayrshire rather than Argyllshire tho haha ;)

So I managed to complete todays jobs which were: fitting new rear shock absorbers, underseal the omega axle where i missed the other day somehow (I think it was when I switched to a fresh can of underseal) and replaced the broken front seat belt stalk. Very happy with todays work. The old shocks were well past it, though 3/4 bolts were easyness itself to replace. the last took a couple of hours and all of my effort and cunning. As always a video will follow

Cam mate! the Chinese say 1 picture a thousand words. Cam writes 1 thousand words no pic !ha keep it up
