Hi im Clare, me and my fiance just bought a 2010 fiat grande punto multijet 1.3 diesel woth 46k on it, in hopes it would be a nice reliable car for us to have for once as our other cars are classics and not so reliable. I dont know if this is the right part of the forum to post this but here goes.
Firstly we bought this car the Saturday just been, took it for a test drive abd it drove perfect the while car was pristine, we did the the dvla checks and previous Mot checks and it only ever had small problems so we thought it would be perfect for us!
We then took the car home from Peterborough to kings lynn and everything was perfect it ran great.
Next morning we got in to go show off our new car tto some family and it didnt start first time (wichh we are used to in our older cars) we put it down to it being cold. Tried again and straight away theres like a a sound coming from the engine like a metal knocking noise and then we saw this huge cloud of smoke coming from the exhaust which covered the car within seconds and the street, my fiance revced it and when the revs are uo the engine makes a whistling noise aswell.
Needless to say we are very angry!
Coukd anyone tell me what the problem might be, nothing really comes up online, the best I can find is maybe a problem with the turbo?

Hi Clare and welcome to the forum !

could you Guys be more precise with the car specs ?? GP MJT 1.3 diesel doesn't tell much ! There has been several version of this engine, the main difference being the turbo (the 2010's should all have 16valves) : the 75BHP is equipped with a wastegate, while the more powerful engines are equipped with a variable geometry turbo... Knowing this "detail" might drive the tech geeks fellas in the right troubleshooting direction.
Also as a general guidance, I would recommend to be more precise in the events description : in your case what color was the smoke cloud ? White would be from water, Blue(ish) from oil and black from excess diesel. Did you respect the pre-heating phase ? The metalic sound from the engine could come from it starting on only few legs, and the following smoke cloud (if black) from the failed cylinder(s) finally firing.

Give us more details so someone will probably jump-in with some other ideas...

Cheers, Bernie

Just to add, on a cold start, blue smoke can also be the presence of unburnt diesel (i.e. not combusted completely). This is usually the case if the glowplugs are faulty or have not been allowed to warm up (i.e. waiting for the glowplug light to go out) when starting the engine.
