Panda 100hp easy project

Introduction

So here goes. I've wanted one of these for a very long time. I loved the basic Pandas when I was an apprentice at Mangoletsi, and when the 100hp's were released I fell in love. One bouncy drive round rural Cheshire and I was hooked. Bear in mind at the time I was driving a 1.3 Vauxhall Nova (and I'd have another, but have you seen the prices!) and there was a lot to compare. Small, fun, nippy, head turning. Fast forward a few years, two more Novas (rot boxes), two cavaliers (reliable, if a little old fashioned), a corolla (boring), mk2 golf GTi (VW couldn't make cars then, still can't now. Awful) and a Merc c200 (lovely car, still got a sick feeling about trading it in) I changed garages, got bored and ended up back where I started earlier this year. And a plan formed.
I started looking a few weeks back, and with some money saved I set myself a £3k budget. Plenty around for that price and less, but all at least 50 miles away. I wanted a grey one, with clean bodywork. Not a big ask I thought. Boy was I wrong.

I drove a 120 mile round trip to view a 90,000 mile, 1 owner, full service history at £2k. When I arrived, there was a dent in the door and the wing, and the front bumper was peppered with stone chips, but it was honest, 90% dealer service history, and drove like a new car. I politely told the seller I would let him know as I was looking at a couple of others. One low mileage sold before I could look, but there was a 54k "mint car" up towards Leeds. Saturday lunch I set off. It wasn't mint. Large dent in the roof, the underside looked like it had been parked in the sea, and it just didn't feel right. I walked away, got in touch with the first one, and asked if he'd take my mechanically good, bodywork bad Merc in part ex. I was only asking £300 for the merc, (I bought it for £400 over two years ago, not bad depreciation!), and that's what he offered. So after a 150 mile round trip to Leeds, I got back in my car and drove back to Mansfield.

£1700, plus the merc got me this.

Inside and out, it's miles better than the low mileage "minter", and on a 70 mile cross country blast home last night, it was perfect. It makes me giggle just to look at it.
I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, not looking forward to it mind...

I've been looking for the suspension arm bush as I have lots of movement in mine even though the arms are new. Where did you get them from? I've looked on their website but it only shows the engine stabiliser bush inserts. Cheers.

Powerflex bushes, part number PFF16-502

Got them on eBay from a UK supplier, £58 delivered. The listing has them for fiat 500/abarth 500, and when I emailed even they said they weren't for the panda. I work on fiats day to day, and know it's one of the (many, many) shared components with a 500, so thought I'd give it a go

Checked the oil yesterday for the third time since the service (5k ago, I know it's bad practice) and it had dropped to half way. I class that as OK. Quick top up and a nice wash, almost time for some new projecty bitsIMG_1472372251.146221.jpg

Update! Other than maintenance, an autosolo and a track day at Oulton Park (destroying four tyres in the process) not much has gone on with the Panda, it's hovering around the 98,500 mile mark and still running well. One thing the track day did break was the exhaust flexi, but it's been threatening for a while so I had a spare in the garage ready to go, as well as an Abarth 500 backbox. I de-boxed the new centre section, made a bracket for the drivers side of the backbox, removed the Abarth tips and modified the outlets to suit the panda.

Giulietta tailpiece, and hidden the drivers side to keep the double exit. It's noisy, it cracks and pops, it's hilarious, but cruising at normal road/engine speeds it's no louder than the original exhaust. I like it.

Also while under the car today I found the water pump (which has looked damp for a while) has decided now is its time. Suppose the next job is cambelt and water pump that I've had sat around for three months is going on.

That's the look I was going for, didn't want to lose the noise or flow of the Abarth box, but didn't want to make it obvious or spoil the look of the Panda. If you can spoil the look of a panda that is...

The problem with poly-bushing the wishbones is that when a bottom ball joint goes you'll have to do it again as the bj is part of the wishbone.

Can't you get ball joint repair kits? Bolt on type maybe?

Google "fiat ball joint repair kit"

Check out the Google search. It might be possible to buy press-in ball joints. However whether that's easier than changing the Polybush is another story.

I'm sure the steering improves, but is the ride any more harsh or noisy with Polybushes?

At the back you will need to be carefu - it looks like the metal/rubber bushes are built to distort as the springs compress.
