Punto (Mk2/2b) Miktre's Motor

Introduction

Hello FF folks,

After 8 months lingering on my newbie thread, it's time for a change.

Meet my Punto MKIIb 1.2 5dr Active!

At 54,000 miles, 4 previous owners and no rust, It was a good investment a year ago. Very little problems have arisen since (Nothing a Haynes can't fix). It's a proper little workhorse, and has built a bit of admiration among the agricultural contractors and conservationists I work with.

I have fixed a snapped bonnet release cable, front suspension, air lock in the coolant, front radiator fan, few dents, removed a previous owners speaker additions (and the parcel shelf they'd broken), reattached the heat shield on the exhaust, rewired the speakers in the drivers door (cables had been unplugged and cables removed) and cleaned the engine down.

So, what have I added?

Obviously Front lamps- These were a must on night surveys. They have been wired up using a ring kit, and can be switched off when not needed.

A CB Radio- You'd have thought not many use these anymore. But I was given this one so a group of wallers I know in the North Peak's could keep in touch- Phones are useless!

Found the best use for 52(?) pattern webbing kit:

Finally, the most important: drying rack

As I work on/ up/ along gravel tracks, meet people up mountain passes and take it places you'd never think puntos would go (Looking at you Great Dodd), its bound to get a bit of damage. Its been nose up, front wheels off arse down once. Caked thick with clay mud. Filled with chainsaws (Love the smell of 2 stroke) and has dragged itself over more potholes than it ever did with its previous owners. I'm currently in two minds about finding heavier duty springs, and have an engine undertray on my wishlist.

I look forward to this winter, as i'm basically going to be living out of it.

Any ideas/ thoughts, questions or improvement suggestions are greatly received!

Just had the call from the garage...

Failed MOT- overheated during its emissions test and it's sills need a bit of welding.

Need to find out to what extent the welding is, that's easy sort. Presumably the overheating issue will be easy to diagnose?

Good job I've just saved £600 quid on my insurance!

Cheers Charlie, it's quite a but worse now I have it back.

Head Gaskets gone.
Two holes on the underside causing a structural issue.
Advisory on all rear suspension.
Oil sump needs replacing.
Front drivers side tyres is close to legal limit.
Front radiator fans is in need of a replacement.

As I'm a volunteer Ranger for now, it's not possible to afford all the parts and get the welding done, and there's no way I can afford to replace the car. I'm going down the "better the devil you know" route. So trying to get another garage to do the work on the HG and welds. Then get it's MOT redone. Hopefully that'll get me running again, I have about 4 months Volunteering left, then try and get some contracts that'll go some way towards the rest of the stuff.

I'd renewed my car insurance this morning and had a £600 odd quid drop. That celebration is bitter/sweet!

Nope, Unfortunatley Im going to have to replace him.

In the time I have left on the MOT certificate (18th) I have far too much on to get it booked in for the work to be done, So im going to use it this week, Get a replacement this weekend, SORN and then look into recovering some costs.

If anyone wants any parts, or would like to do me a nice offer on it as it stands, please PM me. Aside from the stuff listed above, It is a good little car. Gutted.

what was the quote for the welding..??,
as the HG is fairly simple on the 8V motor,
and that'll have it running for another year until you find a better replacement..,

First and only quote, over the phone £200. Without being seen. As its bank holiday, and I'm busy, I'll be getting quotes on the fly while Saturday.

Apparently, these weren't holes until the garage whacked them with a hammer.........

Drivers side (2 holes)

Passenger Side 1 hole

They are tough little beasts especially the more basic ones given the type of use it seems to get there's not a huge amount of point in something newer and shinier unless it has 4wd...

From my private collection:

And the little **** still wouldn't die, cockroach of a car.

Then, I think that settles it. I'm always loathed to give up on something, Especially when my other hobby is the restoration of old tools and I frequently spend crazy hours knocking back rust. Im a bit new to the car side of things and I expected a few issues as I learned.

You hear horror stories, but I reckon I'm up for the challenge.
