Punto (Mk2/2b) Miktre's Motor

Introduction

Hello FF folks,

After 8 months lingering on my newbie thread, it's time for a change.

Meet my Punto MKIIb 1.2 5dr Active!

At 54,000 miles, 4 previous owners and no rust, It was a good investment a year ago. Very little problems have arisen since (Nothing a Haynes can't fix). It's a proper little workhorse, and has built a bit of admiration among the agricultural contractors and conservationists I work with.

I have fixed a snapped bonnet release cable, front suspension, air lock in the coolant, front radiator fan, few dents, removed a previous owners speaker additions (and the parcel shelf they'd broken), reattached the heat shield on the exhaust, rewired the speakers in the drivers door (cables had been unplugged and cables removed) and cleaned the engine down.

So, what have I added?

Obviously Front lamps- These were a must on night surveys. They have been wired up using a ring kit, and can be switched off when not needed.

A CB Radio- You'd have thought not many use these anymore. But I was given this one so a group of wallers I know in the North Peak's could keep in touch- Phones are useless!

Found the best use for 52(?) pattern webbing kit:

Finally, the most important: drying rack

As I work on/ up/ along gravel tracks, meet people up mountain passes and take it places you'd never think puntos would go (Looking at you Great Dodd), its bound to get a bit of damage. Its been nose up, front wheels off arse down once. Caked thick with clay mud. Filled with chainsaws (Love the smell of 2 stroke) and has dragged itself over more potholes than it ever did with its previous owners. I'm currently in two minds about finding heavier duty springs, and have an engine undertray on my wishlist.

I look forward to this winter, as i'm basically going to be living out of it.

Any ideas/ thoughts, questions or improvement suggestions are greatly received!

They are quite mechanically simple, at least the old ones were. Makes them pretty cheap to repair and they can stand up to abuse, also believe yours will have a "safe" engine so less timing belt worries.

My only concern (after immediate HG issues) is that the tin worm will continue and you'll have a running battle each year for MOT but if it's used off road then whatever you have will have undercoat knocked off and possibly damage that will let rust start. Also a coating of mud doesn't help either might be an idea just to spend the bare minimum until something expensive dies and sell up.

That and mine didn't have the notorious electric steering...or power steering at all.

Aye, Until some bugger starts paying me full time, Ill keep this ticking over. Im not one for thrashing it, nor does it do any speed on tracks and fields, so its not frequently coming in contact with the floor. But it does need a bit more care and attention. Lesson learned!

The steering, for now *pats table* Is working well. I think thats because I never ever touch the "City" button.

In the end I sold mine after 4 years hard labour expecting the next owner to strip it for parts, they didn't ran it with no work for a further 3 years by which point it would have been 15.

They even kept all my stickers and added to them (note Edinburgh zoo and Whitby Dracula experience in the back window...I added some more before it went from Oxford and York). I got a label maker from work and covered all the speedo markings above 80 with a sticker. That sticker just said BELIEVE!!!, still there when I saw it 3 years later.

Ah cars with character...

That's it lad! I love the speedo sticker. I can see this punto getting some of that character!

I heard they're built well, just small things trip it up. Once you know what they are, and keep on them, they keep up.

Ok so I've had a wide range of quotes. The highest, £550 for all the welding and head gasket. The lowest, £380 for all the welding, diagnose if it is the head gasket, fix if it is the head gasket and re-MOT test, If its not the head gasket it'll be cheaper.

These sounding reasonable?

380squid for welding is alot, i paid 50eur for 2 "big" holes but it was a guy i know and he only did the welding and cleaning of rust and sprayed a layer of anti rust over, everything else as in removing seats, carpets... putting it back i did myself, dunno the size of your holes tho

I did pretty similar on my old mk2,
IF you remove trim so carpet can lift, and put passenger seat in boot/ garage it SHOULD be @ 1 hour job;)

that's less holey than my last job, and that was @£150 cash

does the motor run sick.. or just spewed coolant as fan is inop...?

The price is for both welding, gasket and MOT.

I'm not convinced it is the HG, it overheats in traffic, it's only ever boiled the coolant once. A few weeks ago I thought I'd hit a badger and found my fan attempting to run but causing more din than spin. If moving forward at a bit of speed, or whacking on the aircon, hot, everything is fine, it's just when it's sat still. Making me think the fan is the issue. The car is still pulling away as it should and I haven't noticed any leaks, changes or issues now I've been careful to not get in traffic.

The garage is aware, if it is the case and a fans needed he's going to order that and a new sump, as mines starting to get a bit threadbare on the front. Fit them, and price me up a undertray from a HGT to protect it. With appropriate angled slots cut in it, it should draw air out the engine bay and not hinder cooling too much. But protect the vitals from the tracks and Hebden bridges Road construction.

I fitted a fan similar to this, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ACP-9-Uni...71517?fits=Car+Make:Honda&hash=item35dfd0d39d
drill out the 3 x rivets securing the FIAT fan,

use the fitting kit to mount this into the Punto fan surround, and then adapt the wiring ( 2 x wires..)
worked perfectly for 2 years - until the car was written off at 50 MPH

dismounted from buckled rad, and then re-used on another punto,
best £25 I could've spent.., :worship:

your call on the sump / undertray..:)
BUT in my experience once you've welded a punto's floor it will NOT last years..,

Thanks for this! Might tell the garage just to test and I'll do it if it's just the fan.

As long as the car can do another 6 to 9 months, or even get a year out of it (with a bit of wire brushing and rust paint) I'll be happy. Can't afford to replace, can't afford not to have it. But anything I do spend has to be better than the alternative, hours on end on dodgy infrequent buses, camping in winter and never getting where I need on time.

Hopefully by then I'll be able to chuck some cash towards a better suited project.

So, it's been a while since I've posted here. The punto still lives. There was an issue sourcing the correct fan within budget, so it's rolling around with a fan from a sporting punto (keeps it cooler...). It's new issue appears to be tracking, but I have worked every day but Christmas for months now, so it's had no time for a fix yet.
