Stilo Stilo ABarth 2.0v turbo build

Introduction

Hi all
This is thread on my Stilo Abarth build, a mate and i are building a track orientated car, although it will also be road legal.

We started off with a White Abarth that was bought from Flee bay, unseen apart from some pics that were on the listing.

By all accounts the only thing wrong was it wouldn't go into gear after a replacement box was fitted, i spoke to the local indy Fiat person and was informed it just needed setting up on the computer. but as the engine was being pulled anyway i didn't bother having it done.

Engine started and ran like a swiss watch, engine is for sale with gearbox and all the ecu's that would be needed.

it only took us a day and a half to totally strip out the engine and internals.

This is how clean the engine bay was when the engine was pulled out.

The donor car for the engine and brakes was an "R" reg Coupe 20v turbo, bought as a non runner (it had a flat battery (y)) i have driven it and all is well, apart from the gear leaver which is like stirring a big bowl of porridge.

I only have one pic of the Coupe and that is of it leaving on a flat bed truck, we were under a bit of a tight schedule to get the coupe gone, the guy i am building the with is a stainless steel fabricator and he had a big job coming in and needed the space.

Before anyone starts :), the coupe wasn't in the best of states, the lacquer was peeling very badly over most of the car, the interior was shabby and it smelt fousty.
So we haven't wrecked a good coupe, it took two full days to strip, what a nightmare, how does anyone manage to work on these cars without loosing fingers or the will to live, in the end we took a disc cutter to the front, i suppose if we had a ramp it might have been easier

I/we were very surprised that the coupe calipers, discs and hubs fit straight onto the Stilo wishbones and struts.

we took the steering rack out of the coupe, as this is hydraulic, as all of the wiring has been removed from the stilo, can bus has all gone and i didn't want to mess around with the electric steering.

The steering arm have had to be extended slightly, also different fixings were needed.

we were going to put a totally new dash with all smart gauges, we did take the dash out of the coupe, just in case we needed switch's or the gauges, it was offered up to the stilo and although not a perfect fit it is quite close, so a reasonable part of the coupe lives on

The spare wheel well has been cut out, the reason for this is we want to have twin 3 inch outlet a la Megane r26r.

As the fuel tank is going to be inside the car, we were a bit concerned about getting rear ended or sticking it into an armco barrier backwards :(

So a bit of fabrication has taken place this is going to hurt if someone tries it out, 40x40x3mm box section fully welded and covered with a sheet of 3mm plate :D

Also because the Stilo doesn't have a clutch peddle, we used the one from the coupe, much fabrication, fitting and removing the jobs it done, i am going to fit a new master cylinder, the old one has done 134k and i think its going to a tad difficult to change.

That brings it up to date for the moment.
I think a trial fit of the engine is next on the list

As a coupe 20v owner this fills me with... happyness!

Another strong motor saved (y) although the 20vt only produced in the regions of about 220BHP i think youll find that enough in the stilo ;) im led to believe it was the fastest 'production' car of its time and IIRC the fastest production Fiat for many years if not ever.

The ONLY piece of info i can give you is not to run standard coolant hoses on it. there is one under the intake manifold that runs the width of the motor Its known as the 'CHOD' or to us laymen 'Coolant Hose Of Death' as its prone to failing. get some decent after market replacements on before you drop the motor in.

Might be worth wandering over to FCCUK (no offence FF, but theres not a strong/useful 'coop' folowing) if you want some good solid advice on the coupe mechanicals. maybe have a look into motor and box weaknesses (theres not many) and strengths. would help you build a reliable strong setup.

Nice project, a lot of work but it seems you have got the "passion/time 7 support"

I am so jealous, with that motor and Stilo handling it should be perfect.

1. I assume you will not keep the motor standard, maybe lighten con rods, pistons & balance for more reliability and quicker higher revving.
2. Don't know how serious you are, but you can put in roller bearings, replace hydraulic lifters with solid and variable cams.
3. Then powder coat your manifolds.
4. Management system, I recommend Motec M800, can tune even suspension.
5. Good luck with ecu, because your ABS and steering will not work anymore.
6. Power to weight ratio - don't know what the rules are for your race serious you want to enter, but you can cut out the spare wheel trunk and replace windows with Perspex's

Good luck, looking forward to some more results.

Thanks for the advice

Thought i was going to get a bashing for destroying a coupe, the engine is going to stay pretty much standard for the first season, full stainless exhaust with sports cat, free flow air filter and chipped.

After that i think it will be stripped and i will do a full rebuild on the engine, then hopefully we will be running about 300-330 hp i think that will be enough :D

The guy i am build the car with is a stainless steel fabricator, so i think everything is going to be stainless, that is also going to be all the pipework.

I will have a look at the coupe forum soon.

Cheers
Ian

Hi Mate
The engine is going to be pretty much standard to start with.
we are only going to do trackdays, not going to enter any races with it, it will also be road legal.(hopefully)
I have pulled all of the wiring out of the coupe, ecus and the dash which is already fitted, the ABS is the one thing that is worrying me, if it dont work it'll be removed.

the car was purchased with AP coilovers, the seller didn't even put it in the advert.

the spare wheel well has already been removed, cause that is where the twin exhaust will be.

Ian

Very interesting to know that the Coupe Front brakes fit straight on to the stilo wishbones, I wonder how compatible they would be on to JTD items??

Great build this and will be following it.

I was so surprised they fitted straight on, was thinking about having to change the wishbones but the mountings are a different type, so was very relieved.

Most of the other stuff is going together reasonable well, it can't go on for ever there has to be something that is going to make us cry.

Back on it at the weekend.

If it turns out to be a straight forward fit then I think more people might start doing this swap too lol, what are the engine mounts like??? where they a straight bolt fit???

In a word NO, NO and NO :bang:

They couldn't be any further away from were we require them, i am sure that not one of the mounts is within a foot (sorry 300mm) from were we want them, will take some pics at the weekend to shown how we get on, that's if i can get them to show up on here.

lol that's what I expected, but, if your handy with a welder, then anything will fit anything lol. My dad had a good go at fitting a Mitsubishi FTO 2.0 V6 into a Sei, we stopped when we realised there was 1cm between the back of the Grill/Bumper and the front head lol.

I truly hope you finish this and its the monster your hoping for.

Well it rained nearly all day down here, so it was down to my workshop this morning to start a rebuild on a customers engine until all the part i have were used up, now waiting for the rest to turn up.

After that is was 400m down the road to my mates place to have a go at tidying up the pipework, wiring on the Coupe engine, one thing led to another and it was decided to have a quick go at a fitting.

Well it doesn't look that bad, all new engine mountings will have to be fabricated but it's quite do able.

Part of the driver side engine mount attached to the engine is going to be cut down to allow a mount to be fitted.

Hi, I assume the Stilo engine that came out was the selespeed version? The reason I ask is that I may need all the electrics for a 2.4 Stilo Abarth manual gearbox version.

Yes it was a Selespeed model, if anyone is interested i have a 76k mile engine with gearbox and ecu's £Offers

If you are struggling with your ECU, there is a very good (apparently) guy who only repairs ecu's in a place called Ivybridge just outside Plymouth.
