Seicento My Sei Minion - The Story So Far...

Introduction

I've posted pics of my Sei Minion on FF before but thought it was about time I contribute a little bit more so this thread is about my car, hopefully I'm posting it in the right place but I'm sure I'll be set right sharpish if not (y)

Having recently read through Pirus's Shoe/Pawsbox and Todger182's Chalky epics with a mixture of lust, fear and cold, cold jealousy :worship: I must point out that those sort of operations will not (yet) be a feature of this thread...
aimachieve.jpg

Sei Minion was bought as a cheap town runaround in order to avoid taxi/rental car costs as due to health issues in 2014 I was carless for a bit. Health returned and brought with it this...
seiminion.jpg

No, it did not come with a plastic minion bolted onto the badge backing. Yes, I did walk into toys r us and buy a minion. Yes, drilling a hole in a minion was fun. Dignity and I are not firm friends.
Anyway, this little car turned out to be the most fun drive I've had since (real) mini's and RWD Escorts many years back. A series of dull useful family cars had eroded my interest in oily things but this titchy yellow go-cart has been a bit of a revelation. Only problem being when I was learning the world ran on contact breakers n carbs, not ECU's and squirty plugs. Still bolts is bolts and the rest I'll learn the usual way, by screwing it up so badly I have to figure out how it works.

Current job list:
Fit crap hood ornament - tick
Build car port and pass it off as childrens undercover play area - tick - pics to come
Flush out liquid rust from coolant system and fill with lovely clean stuff - tick
New spark plugs - tick - plug 1 centre electrode was v v badly burned/melted??
Proper brave engine/bay degrease with gunk and pressure washer to find where oil is leaking
Clean possibly change sump pan
New oil n filter
Timing belt and (while I'm at it) water pump
Tracking
Possible top end column change (covered in previous posts, ta all)
Minor dents/scuffs to sort
Full detail

Current Dream list:
Slight height loss
Wheels, 14", lower profile boots, wider ffs, something interesting
Lights that provide illumination

OK enough listing. I have actually done something and have pics to prove it. Pics that are blurry, sorry. This will have been done many times before but...
This cannot be allowed to stay grubby scuffed 'orrible silver.
con1_001.jpg
Finally, a use for the 00000 grade steel wool lurking in the shed. Half n half shot...
con2_001.jpg
The wool did a good job, brought down the scratchy texture, cut out some minor scuffs.
con3_001.jpg
Providing a nice platform for primer...
con4_001.jpg
Then topcoat.
con5_001.jpg
Some drying time later, re-assembly began.
con6_001.jpg
con7_001.jpg
Nice moment seeing the contrast between the new colour and the old (hang on, what the hell are they called  ) control panel function indication labels? Not catchy is it.
con8_001.jpg
The result. It was dark by this time but I had to take this photo. The voices said so.
con9_001.jpg
Well there it is, documentary evidence that I did it. To anyone who is going to do it I'd say the only fly in the ointment is having to snap off the big white bit on the back of the panel. It needs to be either glued or melted with a soldering iron to get it back on, easy enough to do but worth planning for.
Oh yeah, the car came with a cracked o/s door mirror housing containing a cut-to-shape temporary mirror which had been cut to shape by someone who was clearly unfamiliar with using their hands. Or eyes. Or brain.

Now replaced by this from jiminwatford's ebay shop (ta muchly for sending quickly).

More updates will happen. Maybe nothing too exciting for a while. Thanks all...
Matt.

Re: These things happen.

....My bank account hurts.
How do you think Minion feels!
How would you like to be stuck on the street unable to move with your backside stripped naked, open to public gaze & the ravages of wind & rain? Ahhhh
BTW in case you don't know you can fit a SPI fuel tank they're generally cheaper than the MPI ones.
If you use the 'search this forum' function i'm sure someone was selling fuel tanks really cheap a year or two ago.

Depends what sort of cash you're offering :D

Thanks for the tank tip but a replacement is already on the way from jiminwatford.

Will say he's a good bloke to buy stuff off my side skirts were off him and were here in 3-4 days would have been quicker if they didn't get delayed

James is a handy contact, especially for things like door mirrors ;). Got inner ARB brackets off him last week with INTACT studs (y).
....but as a rare 'filthy beast that still smokes' i would have paid the extra for a brand new fuel tank on safety grounds.

Finally took some pics...

This genuinely started out as "Oh, I'll drill those rear lamps like the nice guide on fiat forum says" to get shot of some condensation.
May have overshot...

It's sat properly on the outer axle stands. Centre one was just an afterthought whilst packing tools away.

Thought I'd take the bumper off. Smelt petrol so took the tank off. Started clearing rust on underside then decided "what the hell, lets take the axle off".
Tank...

When I took these pipes off I pushed in the black collar in and just pulled the pipe. The piece of pipe that came off still had a small white plastic insert in it.
Did I undo these correctly? Should they just push back together? Not familiar with these connectors.

Re: Finally took some pics...

I'd have thought so, they look very silimar to pushfit plumbing stuff. which you tends to have a twist ability to allow the collar to be moved. I'd presume that the white plastic inserts are there to prevent the other pipe from caving and help seal.

Hard job to do your fuel tank?

Not a hard job no, just slow because you have to constantly ask yourself if anything you're doing could cause a spark!

1. Check area for any ignition sources. Make sure inspection lamps are placed safely.
2. Disconnect battery neg, make sure it can't spring back onto batt.
3. Take out drivers seat and rear seat bases. You don't need to do this but it takes 5 mins and makes access easier.
4. Put car safely up on axle stands. Remove exhaust from car (I suppose this will vary from system to system, I took mine off just after the flexi pipe.) for access. It may be possible to work around it but I didn't try.
5. Undo access plate under back seat.
6. Make double sure there's nothing that can spark. Take plug and pipe off fuel pump/sender unit. Undo bolts holding fuel pump/sender unit.
7. Remove fuel pump/sender unit. It's a tight fit and will need a bit of tilting to get the float out.
8. Siphon all fuel from tank into suitable container/s.
9. Remove plastic trim in front of r/o/s wheel arch. Unplug fuel pipes.
10. Crack off the two bolts at the back of the tank and the nuts in the centre front. Place a jack under the tank with a bit of wood or something less harsh than metal on top (do not attempt to use domestic pets for this purpose) and pump it up gently just to take the weight of the tank.
11. Remove the bolts and take the tank away.

From memory that's what I did. My memory is rubbish so I may have missed bits but that's the general gist.
Just be mindful of the spark situation. I know everyone goes on about how much fun explosions are but once the fireworks are over and someones gonads are dangling from an overhead cable I suspect it might be unpleasant.

Does anyone think I ought to pop this in guides? I doubt its up to a high enough standard and it has no pics.

The rattle.

There is a rattle coming from the back of my sei. It seems to be coming from inside the car.
I have been stripping to find the source of this noise, for some reason this upset the neighbours so instead I have begun taking parts off the car.
Tailgate is naked, rear seats and belts are out along with any plastics. Boot carpet, spare and tools all gone.
Did fiat fit a hidden component whose sole task is to rattle?

Ta,

I got a new tank for free because fiat recalled then

Could be just the vents at back that curculate air if its just metal no carpet youd exspect 'cabin noise'

Tried with vent out, still no joy. Cabin noise yes but this doesn't fit the bill. My latest thinking is perhaps the handbrake levers where they come out through the hub backplates. They have lots of vertical movement, 1" plus.
Might pop the drums off tomorrow and see if summats not right. Might be time for some new shoes.

Hey, I put some new shoes on,
And suddenly everything is right,
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on and everybody's smiling,
It's so inviting,
Oh, short on money,
But long on time,
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine,
And I'm running late,
And I don't need an excuse,
'Cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes.

Had to, sorry.
:p
