Panda (Classic) My new Panda

Introduction

Hi folks, after many years of mucking about with Alfas i finally picked myself up the Panda I always wanted....

She's quite charming wee thing, a blue 1.0 CLX and only has 66k on the clock.

She's in pretty good nick and surprisingly has had no advisories on the last 2 MOTs, which is a bonus!

I'm going to need to do a couple of things, namely fit some decent speakers somewhere (probably going to make some pods to slot into the the dash pocket and a couple to go in the boot). I do have a decent head unit and speakers from my 146Ti that I just scrapped, have fitted the head unit temporarily, but the existing speakers which are sitting in the dash are rubbish. She doesn't have an aerial for the radio, can i still get an original telescopic style one from Fiat? If so, where would it normally go and do I need to drill a hole somewhere?

My horn isn't working either, but that's not rocket science, ha ha.

Another thing I'd be keen to try is to install electric windows, anyone got any info on this?

I'm also needing to sort the windscreen washers and investigate why the injector light is on, hopefully a new lambda will sort it, seems to be driving fine anyway. But I reckon it's all fairly easy stuff.

I do have some lovely leather Alfa GTV front seats, which I might put in there in the future, but only if it can be done whilst retaining the existing seat rails, we'll see how I feel after I get the rest of the stuff done.

Since most of my experience is with much bigger engines I'm surprised that I find this such good fun to drive and the car is pretty pokey for it's size. Would anyone be able to suggest an option for upgrading the suspension though? looking for a smoother ride for motorw,ay speeds, are there uprated springs/dampers or perhaps even coilovers I could use to achieve this?

I'm not interested in being a boy racer anymore, so probably won't do an engine swap, which was always my plan when I finally got a Panda, but I'd love to get my hands dirty with some trick engineering, especially if it adds a bit more comfort to the journey. Any suggestions welcome :)
yeah nice looking panda..

electric windows can be a pain to get. you can get them from ebay italy.. but you would have to make all the wiring yourself. not that hard.

the injector light can be caused by a few things, thankfully the ECU and wiring on this engine is easy to get your head around.

first check the earthing strap. that can cause the injector light to come on. just try earthing the engine and chassis to the negative battery terminal with a set of jump leads. then start the car a few times, see if that turns the light off.

if not, check for any vacuum leaks after the throttle body. it makes the exhaust gasses have more oxygen content causing the lambda to read wrong.

failing that.. yeah change the lambda sensor. though you may be able to clean it by getting the bit that pokes inside the exhaust after the threads to glowing point with a blow torch.. burn any carbon build up off it. it has worked for me in the past.

failing that, check the temperature sensor on the right hand side of the engine.. near the thermostat. they can sometimes fail.

they are about the only things that ever goes wrong with the injection system. can sometimes get issues with the crank position sensor.. but normally when that happens, the engine just does not run.

i am not sure about a smoother ride.. i have been in a panda with lowering springs, and it seemed a little hard.
my advice is just get some new rear dampeners and see how that feels.. i did it to my panda 4x4 and made it feel great! then if you like it, look into getting some replacements for the front.

you'll need to talk to the other guys about comfort. heh

i did an engine swap in a carbed 4x4, but for you it would be more easy.

engine swap is not too hard to be fair use a mk1 punto 60 or 75 you can still use the pandas gearbox too, because you are already running fuel injection it would make it quite an easy thing to do.. almost all of the wiring is there.. replace the fuel pump with a punto one, and hook up the coolant system to the original one.
plenty of wiring diagrams on the forum if you get lost.

put it this way, if you ever needed to replace the clutch.. haha

well keep us posted on the work you do!, and pictures.. loooots of pictures :D

Thanks for the info Dragon man will deal with that at the weekend, need some daylight! In the meantime can do the small things like fix the windscreen washers and hopefully come up with a solution to the lack of speakers. It does look like the one in the video, but it's not. I believe it was looked after by an older gent before I bought it which would explain the good condition.

Will get stuck in over the next few days and report on progress.

Took a look at a few things in the engine bay and found this! The hose between the airbox and manifold is like Swiss cheese!

I've duct taped it to the best of my ability whilst waiting for a new one, but would I be right in thinking this could contribute to injector light being on (I.e. throwing off lambda sensor).

Either way, no major issues to report so far :)

No, shouldn't affect the lambda reading, it's just a hot air pickup for the inlet while the engine is warming up, makes very little difference then and is bypassed completely once the engine is up to temp.
