Panda (Classic) Roofus

Introduction

OK so my new arrival has now been christened Roofus by the family so I thought he'd better get his own Members motors thread since I've done some stuff today.
So, for the sake of the new thread here's the story so far......
Once upon a time, at a show long ago (well, last year) a mysterious Panda showed up and joined our special line up by the toilets. So obviously I decided to do hot dogs in front of it:cool:

It was owned by a nice couple who had originally owned it new, then bought it back a year or so before this pic was taken when they spotted it looking sorry for itself on ebay, and spent a lot of time and money putting it straight. Looked good then and a year or so later I saw it again at another Thoresby show and by now they were considering selling it again. I had a look around it then and was impressed by the condition but I really wasn't looking for another car then.
Fas t forward another few months and it still wasn't sold, and I was looking:D

that was only going to end one way...

So: as I got it Really good nick: Shiny shiny exterior:cool:

Brand new wider steel wheels and tyres which I love!

Brand new twin sunnies just fitted:

Sadly slightly tired colour edition switchgear

Interior mostly good except for a chunk out of the bottom of the steering column shroud, rather weedy stereo and tatty gear gaiter and knob due to use of a big lock on them

So since I am not a big fan of the grey interior plastics anyway a better condition set of black stuff went in:

And clear indicators went on:

And that was it for the first week or so.

Next issue found was rust related, just a wee one to get me started:

So cut away the crusty bits to give me a neater hole to fill:

Look away now if you're squeamish.. repair section fabricated from an old Panda door I had around:

Cranked up the welder (I know but it's my first welded repair:eek:) As you can see I had the welder behind the door so I was reaching underneath to knock the power on. Blasted quite a few holes before I realised I'd flipped it onto a higher power setting at the same time, Doh! Think I managed to get enough metal to metal anyway.

Quick skim of filler and a coat of my own custom mix Hammerite:

That's it so far. Alternating daily driver duties with Grumbleweed at the moment anyway so at least he's getting used. Never actually used the sunroof in anger yet though.
Good Luck!

I sorned Sky and Fizzles knackered fuel pump means I'm rocking it in the mk3 4x4 - whose passenger side wiper has given up (linkage has fallen apart) - what is it with Fiats and wipers? Had a Uno that wiper mechanism would just stop and start at random!

Oh and if those grey dash board bits are cluttering up the garage I can give them a home in LVJ! :)

Nothing too exciting going on but Roofy has fresh engine and transmission oil, new thermostat (temp gauge does work! who knew!) and coolant and new crank sensor. Still running pretty rough, we'll get there though. New front bearing arrived today too so that'll go on...sometime.

How's the rough running?

Checked the timing?

Look at me the expert!!!!! :ROFLMAO:

Apparently that's what was up with the black CLX ie.
Still rough, and rather gutless. Cam timing's fine, can't do much with the ignition timing on the ie. Yet to have a really good go over it though, waiting for more clement weather. (seem to have this camshaft lying about here too

...)

Hoping to bring him up for Cupar this year if you're around

Make the most of that glorious Scottish sunshine with the twin sunnies.

I think I might be in Germany but I would love to see him sometime. That green combined with the Colour special has the same effect on me as the lemon drizzle cake at Costa.

I know I do (y)

Y10 brethren are not allowed twin sunnies :( I was thinking twin sunnies would look silly on a Y10 but maybe not.

I think it would look awesome :) could a roof be cut and welded on without crazy amounts of bodging out of interest?

I think the only real hurdle would be whether the Y10s roof is physically big enough to accept twin sunnies off a Panda. The Y10s pillars curve in more than a Panda giving a smaller surface area I reckon. On the plus side I think the roof is a flat enough.

Well, got a handle on at least one issue for the rough running. The Cat is now making a noise like the exhaust is dragging along the ground, so the substrate is obviously completely breaking apart inside. Got to get me to and from work tomorrow then I can pull the exhaust apart on Sunday and get it sorted.
Then...rocket ship obviously:devil:

Well, I don't know about actually de catting long term but I'll be knocking the middle out this weekend as a short term fix until I get a new cat to fit so I should get an idea. No cat isn't terribly MOT friendly though.

Well, had the exhaust apart last weekend and the rear joint between centre and rear sections is really hard up, so ordered both sections up from Euro car parts. Arrived today but sadly they seem to have sent me a centre for a Panda, and a centre box for an Escort...oops. Guess that's another weekend it's still not sorted then!
