Punto (Mk1) My Green 60s

Introduction

Hi guys I am new here:) Used too have a Black 1.7 TD SX like 5 years ago but sadly it got written off by a Bin Wagon:( went through a couple of other cars since then(non fiats) but Now I have just bought this!
99 punto 60s 1.2 I think its only an 8v but the most reliabale car I owned was an 1.4 8v Astra Mk3 so I kinda like the idea of having another 8v.lol

I spent half an hour checking for rust on this car and couldnt find anything serious.lol a little surface here and there in none critical spots and a bit on the exhaust but the Body is in Brilliant nick from what I could see:)

The bonnet and Wings are a little faded from the sun so when i get it home will Deffo be giving it a damn good T-cut and polish:)

I dont intend on doing much to this car in terms of Engine and stuff but I am going to Get a nice set of 15" alloys,Replace the rusty backbox with a Rage backbox, nice oval twinpipe one or summat...I want it a little louder but not so ya can hear it a mile away.lol
Might replace the bumpers with colour coded ones at some point,Deffo gonna replace those orange indis with clear ones, probably remove the strips off the side as if i remember correctly they are only glued on. A hairdrier will make short work of them:)
Basically I am not doing anything Excessive too it just gonna tidy it up alot:) Oh and a add a Sub and upgrade the door speakers, Not going with 6 x 9,s this time. The parcel shelf couldnt hold them properly in my old TD SX If I remember correctly and i think the weight made them sag. So this time i will just upgrade the components instead.
Only cost me 295 with the Part ex for my MOT Failed Almera.lol
Good deal?
I am in Bolton:) I really need to sort my profile out.
Yeah not gonna do anything too Extravagant too it...just a bit of TLC
Might detango the rear lights too actually now that i think of it.
And will probably get some nice Xenon bulbs for it if I can..I will add stuff to it as I decide and Work on it:) they are repairing the clutch atm as it was leaking fluid or something so I havn't actually picked it up yet. the deposit is down though and i should get the call to pick it up tomorrow:)

agreed, looks nice that does (y)

You are correct that the 60 is an 8v, good strong engines when properly maintained. My advice is go through whatever history you got with it and then set about a good service. The list i would suggest is pretty long if you got not history but they are easy to work on and parts are cheap so that's not a big deal. I won't list everything until you say what history you have (or haven't) got with it.

From a looks point of view i think i can safely say orange indicators are back in atm, i would leave them. I would also leave the side strips on myself, think they break up the slabby sided-ness of the mk1 and it looks a bit too chavv-y and boy racer for my tastes. But you can't go wrong with a widemouth front bumper from a sporting or gt. 15" wheels will look nice but make it quite a bit slower, i would recommend 14s and slightly lower suspension to make the arch gap smaller - that way it will still feel nippy and also handle corners better. Will also look miles better than having 2 different sets of wheel trims lol ;)

Does this one have door speaker pods? Pretty rare on a 60 but could have been fitted by a previous owner, they would normally just have the speakers in the dash. Higher spec'd ones came with door pods though. For best sound quality i would say get some decent 3-way components, the woofers in door pods, the mids in the dash speaker pods and tweeters either stuck on top of the dash or on the a-pillars. replace the rear ones with good components, biggest that will fit where the stock rear speakers go (or just disconnect them altogether as you don't really need them). And then a good quality sub in the boot to provide bass. Stay well clear of 6x9's if sound quality is your aim ;)

And lastly, welcome to FF!!!! Any questions just ask ;)

Hmm I didnt actually check if there were speakers in the Front doors:doh:
Will have a look when I pick it up,The last owner was an old gentleman who had it for 7 years i believe so I doubt he would have added pods in it:)
I have the headunit from my Almera which is only a month old and has a proper output for subs and a second one for line out. Will the component speakers work from an amp or just on the normal wiring from the Stereo?
I love my music so will probably be doing this 1st.lol
:slayer::slayer::slayer::slayer:

The alloys I think will be Gun metal Black if I can find some cheap enough, will have a look at 14,s too:) but might try 15 Low pros aswell. not sure yet:)

I forgot to mention in original post this car has only 47k miles on the clock! the least on any of the cars I have ever owned:DSo happy with that if its legit.
The guy in the shop says he believes it is legit due to the previous owners by the sounds of it So if thats the case then I shouldnt expect too much engine trouble on it(Fingers crossed)lol

I also see that the front bumper has 2 slots that are covered over. am i right in thinking I could possibly fit Fog lights into them??and how difficult is it to do?
my old TD SX had fogs so I am hoping I can put them on this too.cars always look better with fogs on the front in my opinion:)
And orange indis are currently in?o_O thats unexpected..when i had my old one all anyone raved on about was Clear indis.lol been out of the Punto scene for a few years though. strange how stuff comes back and then fades away again.

get a widemouth bumper as i suggested and it should have cut outs for fog lights - do an image search for mk1 punto widemouth bumper ;) some narrowmouth bumpers had them too but they wide one looks so so so much better.

Speakers will depends on the stereo and speakers used. You will need to compare how powerful the outputs on your headunit are to some speakers that you would like basically.

And although low mileage is nice its not always the best thing, 47k on a mk1 punto means it must have done alot of sitting about in its life and thats when rubber parts get brittle so be weary of belts, hoses and seals. Example would be the timing belt, they are meant to be changed around 50k miles or every 5 years, but i bet its still has the original and that will be around 15years old now if it is.

Just drove the car back home:)
Didnt notice any problems apart from a squeaky alternator or fan belt on 1st startup.
Theres no power steering on it though...I will be like bloody Popeye within 2 months of driving it.lol
And the brake is hard too push down...but prefer that to em being loose and squishy.lol
For a 1.2 its got nice acceleration..My almera was a 1.5 and this feels alot quicker. Goes through the 1st 3 gears in about 6 seconds though.lol

Gonna take it on a 80 mile run to Telford day after tomorrow to see a friend, not been on the motorway with it yet.lol
Will give it a T-cut and polish, wash e.t.c and then get some more pics up:)

Got all the MOT test certificates for the last 5 years and only advisory i found was for worn tyres,Twice.lol
Nothing else with it really. No receipts for work done by the looks of it.
My Friend who i am going to see used to do craploads of work on cars so I will get him to give it a good looking over when I get there.

The front speakers are in the Dash btw Blu. are they difficult too upgrade???Back ones shouldnt be a problem though.lol
Prolly chuck the Headunit,Subs and Amp in tomorrow or wednesday

The headunit has 4x50w outputs. that should be enough for Components shouldnt it?

yeah that's a widemouth bumper from a GT (has washer jets for headlights). If you get a sporting one they don't have the holes for the jets - them jets are so annoying when you have washed you car and need to spray the screen, trust me i know from experience..

You should be able to get a brand new one in plastic one if you don't mind the black plastic - i quite like them with black plastic bumpers. Although it won't cost that much to have some bumpers painted so i wouldn't worry too much about colour.

Speakers are easy to upgrade yes, but the new ones have to fit in there so there is both a maximum diameter and depth of speaker that will fit. Keep your eye on ebay for cars being broken and you may just get yourself some GT door cards with the speaker pods - the centre console is a good upgrade interior wise too. And actually the seats are nicer and drivers one is height adjustable too.

o_O not a bad find.lol but I kinda like the Blue seats for some weird reason.
The door cards look nice though. might get some of them:)

Am i gonna need an adapter for the back of my Headunit??I have 2 that joined together to work in my Almera.mebbe one of them will fit:p

Just had a look under the bonnet too check oil levels,Water e.t.c...
Am I right in thinking there is something missing here between the airbox and the down pipe?
IMAG02972.jpg

Is it a problem????I will replace the Pipe I think needs to be here but Is it safe too drive??I need nip down too the supermarket.lol

Missing.. aluminium springy tube..!!

it's to bring in warm air from the manifold to aid driving in cold temps.. useless today.. but worth picking one up before September..

chances are your front suspension bearings are'nt great. as ONLY the TD's had PAS, ;)
all the li'l petrols were o.k. without..

You've got a cracking little original car there, so I'd recommend you change as little as possible, just go through it and maintain and improve sympathetically...

Speakers... it should have 6"x4" rectangular speakers in the dash and 4" circular by the rear pillars, so firstly just try upgrading these with decent 2-way replacements (I did this on a Tipo and it made a huge difference, newer speakers were deeper though...).

Wheels... definitely don't go with 15s as the Mk1 Puntos were designed for smaller wheels overall than the MK2s, so 14" maximum I'd say. Why not look for some 90s genuine fiat wheels, ideally the Cinq or early Punto sporting ones would look great. And if you don't have PAS then you shouldn't be tempted by tyres wider than 165 or 175.

Otherwise just change all fluids (gearbox, brakes & clutch, radiator) and fettle it generally (maybe change shocks for stiffer / newer but I wouldn't lower it being just a 60S...) Be aware that HGs do go so watch for this but sorting the cooling system (new stat?) should avoid that.

Get it to be a tidy little runaround with improvements you can appreciated and it's another classic, cute, original small Fiat preserved for another few years...

Its not a bad little car:)I dont plan on doing anything too drastic too it.lol the rear springs look rusted up a bit and the Paint is peeling off em so they will prolly need replacing.
Rear tyre walls are a little cracked too but front ones look quite new. plenty of tread on em and no cracks.
Probably will go with 14" alloys in Gun metal black
they look nice on dark coloured cars:)
Was gonna take the Wheel trims off but they have some surface rust on em.need a good wire brushing I think.
might try and tidy em up a bit when i get to Telford untill I get the alloys.

The brakes were really hard to press when i drove the Car back from the shop but this morning i pumped the pedal a few times, held it down and started the Engine too check the Servo and it went down nice n smooth. Now the brakes feel 10 times better.lol did I inadvertantly reset it or something???brakes feel like brakes now instead of em feeling like they had bricks under em.lol

Now I feel like they are good enough for the motorway..wasnt too sure about it before.lol

EDIT Actually the Sporting alloys look kinda nice:) but I can only seem too find em in 15"
Or mebbe some like this:)

Would look nice I think:p

Sounds like the servo wasn't working... maybe something's leaking or cracked with age?

Get the niggles sorted before upgrading tyres, springs etc I'd say. Also those wheels look ideal but IMO Anthracite Grey would look to dark with the standard bumpers. Looks OK for now with the Fiat wheeltrims even if they don't match...

And personally I'd put the older tyres on the front and wear them out first.
