Grande Punto My Red GP T-jet!

Introduction

Hello everyone,

So I've had my car for around 6 months now and have made a few threads about individual parts of my car. So I thought I should start my members motor thread (should of done this earlier!).

I'll just be throwing everything I've done so far into this post and then I'll update accordingly :)

So first off, the purchase:

This was one of the pictures took by the garage, they didn't clean it up as they should of and this pic didn't do it justice, but I saw the potential haha ;)

And this is one when I got it home

First car pic.JPG

It then got a proper wash at some point

My first purchase was an Abarth aerial, not much but it all adds up!

abarth aerial.jpg

I then realised that 2 of my alloys were buckled :( So I bought the optional upgrade alloys off someone on here :slayer:

Along with buying the alloys I also bought Abarth front headlights, worked out a good deal for both alloys and headlights as I bought them together (considering both alloys and headlights could literally of passed as brand knew) (y)

There was a bit of an issue regarding the fitment of my Abarth headlights, it appears my car was produced in the cut-over between the S1 and the S2. Cosmetically mine looks all S2 but the headlight connectors were S1 and I had bought the S2 version of headlights. So off down to the scrappy I went, look what I came back with...S2 headlights connectors!

As some of you may of noticed from the previous pictures - BULBS :) Thought I'd buy some osram bulbs all round before I fitted the abarth headlights. Osram Night Breaker Unlimited, Osram Cool Blue Intense and Osram Diadem.

It was then given a full wash, polish and protection with the Auto Glym products

And here's a bit of beading after using AG products for a while

And for my final update of this post, I vinyl wrapped my door pillars yesterday! As I'm sure most of us know the horrible black plastic that was there originally was so badly scuffed and scratched I decided it needed to change. I actually forgot to get a pic of the original vinyl but trust me it was horrible haha.

Here's the pillar with no vinyl

And here's the carbon fibre effect (can't take all credit, the girlfriend gave me a hand too)

It's not 100% perfect but I'm pretty happy with it, was thinking of buying some matte black pinstripe or something to mask over the top and bottom of the pillars to give it a clean cut finish.

And that's all for now! Hope you like what I've done with it so far, as for the future I'm thinking of:

  • EBC turbo grooved discs all round with EBC greenstuff all round
  • Remap
  • Rear tints
  • Paint brake calipers
And I'm sure some other things will happen along the way.

Thanks.
Nice mate!

What size is your exhaust? 2.25" or 2.5"

I don't recommend you run 1bar boost at hight rpm unless you got 2.5" exhaust for safety reasons. ;)

Also for that you want a 4Bar FPR or bigger injectors, and you're looking at 200hp ;)

Stock map sensors can only read 1.55 bar, so avoid peak boost above 1.5 bar - or 21.7psi, which is the same.

PS. Use only 98octane or higher, these engines don't like **** fuel - engine knock!

PPS. With the right mods and software tuning, these engines can take up to 300hp with stock internals :)

Thanks mate! The exhaust is 2.5" don't worry ;) I'm happy with the power/torque 170bhp and 233 ft lbs at the moment however I will try for some more power towards the end of the year. That being said I don't particularly want to make the power peaky just so I can say a higher bhp figure, I still want a nice smooth graph and useable power.

Boost levels aren't particularly high (I will check later on and report back) and I only use 99RON fuel (y)

Hello everyone, another update! They have been slowing down recently as I've been very happy with how the car has been performing.

However I have took delivery of a CG Motorsport Dual Friction clutch kit with DMF and I ordered a Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC). This will allow the car to transfer all of the peak torque being produced (233 ft lbs! :p). It should be getting fitted early next week so I'll update again then! For now, some pictures:

looks awesome, also how did you go about installing the abarth front and tail lights? is it a easy diy job.

Thanks mate! Tail lights are super easy (2 screws). The fronts are a little more difficult as you need to loosen the bumper so it drops slightly/remove bumper totally. This isn't a hard job if the screws come out easily enough. There should be a guide floating around for this :)

So I've had the clutch fitted for a few days now (still sub 100miles) so I thought I'd give an update. Immediately after it was fitted I found that the biting point was slightly higher and that setting off in first was quite jerky as expected. However as the days have gone on I have either got used to this or it has bed in slightly, possibly both.

I'm now barely noticing the different driving style needed for this clutch, which is essentially getting used to not having much biting point travel and to not ride the clutch and have confidence in releasing it. I'm guessing a few weeks down the line I won't have any issues whatsoever as I'll be used to it.

With regards to the capability of the clutch it's coping very well, I'm letting it bed in as gently as I can for a couple hundred miles but for the brief moments where I've used peak torque (233 ft lbs!) it hasn't battered an eye lid and transferred the power with no issues, generally power delivery feels smoother. Along with gear changes feeling 'sportier' but this may just be placebo effect.

I'm happy with it and only getting happier! :)

How's the clutch mate? All good? Mine is still fine (stock T-Jet 120 S1 clutch) even with that TD04 abusing it :)

Hi mate, clutch is perfect. Handles the torque with no problem, I actually feel as though my car feels more powerful now too; potentially as the clutch was slipping as soon as I had the remap. I think I'll go back for a quick dyno test just to see.

My old clutch must of been abused before I had it if yours handles the td04! I only went for the updated clutch as it didn't work out to be much more expensive.

PS I'm very jealous of the td04, out of interest what kind of 0-60 times do you get?

Nice to hear that all is well. I'll let mine go until it's death, once it dies, I'll think about upgrades :)

I rarely do 0-60, there is no point. But since it can hit 63-64 mph in 2nd gear (7000rpm limit), I'm sure the times are low 6 to high 5's.

I've done a vid, 60-125 in 13.6 sec at 700m altitude

Merry Christmas everyone!

Just a quick update:

A couple of weeks ago I managed to curb one of my optional alloys, the damage wasn't too bad however I couldn't just leave it.

Anyway rather than get it re-diamond cut, as the finish would never be the same, I got all 4 alloys refurbished in anthracite. I'm happy with the results :) excuse the dirty car, however the alloys are clean haha.

Update,

A few weeks ago now I was welcomed to a keyed car. The whole of the passenger side had been keyed, front wing, door and rear quarter :( I won't be posting any pics on here as I just want it forgotten about! The car is going in tomorrow for a full passenger side spray to sort the keying and also a front bumper respray as it has faded.

I have also had my linea front splitter and wing mirror caps sprayed in a gloss black to match some tinted side repeaters which I've fitted. I will provide pictures once the car is out of the body shop and hopefully it'll be looking better than ever :)

In the meantime I thought I'd share some pictures from today, I spent some time cleaning my engine bay as i'm attending a dyno day on Saturday.

Evening,

As promised this is an update to my previous post.

In my opinion my car is looking better than ever! Front bumper and passenger side have been resprayed (due to bumper fading and someone keying all 3 panels of the passenger side).

Gloss black mirror caps and tinted side repeaters.

Please see the pictures below from the dyno day I attended on the weekend. Since last having it on the dyno I have fitted a dual friction clutch and Airtec intercooler. Before I had 169bhp and 233 ft lbs torque. I now have 172bhp and 256 ft lbs! I'll be back for a map tweak to take me over 180bhp hopefully! :)

Car looks great mate. Have you been happy with The Performance Centre for the mapping?

Hello mate, thanks for the comment, means a lot :)

The Performance Centre have been excellent with me, I'll be going back for a map tweak shortly. Their work is top quality, as seen by the calibre of cars that they work on (check their Facebook page). I have ran my map for quite a few months now, no issues. They have also mapped a 396bhp Abarth 500, they know the t-jet engine well.

Good Morning,

Little thread update, as I've taken note of everything I've done to the car I thought I should carry on even though it's not that interesting.

First off; map tweak put on hold as apparently house buying takes up a lot of money (n)

Still happy with the 172bhp 256 ft lbs, plenty enough. I know 0-60 times aren't that relevant these days but I did a few quick runs the other week and was pleasantly surprised. I would of been happy with a low 7 seconds however my best time of 3 runs was 6.7 seconds! This was on a slightly curved road and only 3 attempts, I'm sure it could of came down another .1 or .2 if I had a good amount of time perfecting the launch. Another factor is that in the t-jet you just have to shift into 3rd gear for the last few mph.

Anyway, I've also had to replace my rear shocks due to wear - car is on 54k so fair enough. The rear of the car was so soft and bouncy it was crazy, so if anyone experiences the same it'll be the shocks.

I still plan on a map tweak at some point to take me over the 180bhp margin, simply because that's what I set out to achieve. It's likely that the car won't feel any quicker, but 180 sounds better than 172!

Hello Alex,

Love this thread you have done, the car looks fantastic! How easy is it to fit the turbo? I've got a vl36 I bought a while ago that I haven't had time to do :(

Also, how on earth did you source the linea diffuser!? I have been searching for one for what seems like forever!

Hello mate,

Appreciate the kind words!

I got the turbo fitted while having a major service by a trusted mechanic/garage I use. Think I got charged around 2 hours labour for the turbo swap.

I've read threads about swapping the turbo yourself and basically you'll get it done if you can set a side a day.

If you have a trusted garage that you use then I'd suggest just dropping it off and picking it up later that day without stressing yourself out haha.

It's also fine to run the vl36 without any map etc, runs just fine.

No problem mate got a red one myself!

Well I have the forge intercooler and abarth headlights to fit as well as the turbo so might make a weekend of it!

That was going to be my other question, about it being safe to run without it being mapped as I still wanted a full exhaust system before I try getting it mapped!

Do you have any other plans for the car? Or you happy with how it is for the moment?
