Panda (Classic) My Sisley, Panda 4x4 - division north

Introduction

As mentioned before, I'm starting new thread for my recent purchease.
Bought it from forum user, deposit was place without seeing the car first, went all the way down south with rest of the cash and A-frame in boot.

First summary of the car is ( 1 is very poor, 10 is perfect):

  • Originality - 6,
  • Bodywork - 7,
  • Engine - 6,
  • Gearbox - 5,
  • Interior - 5,
  • Structural rust - 8,
  • Visible rust - 8,
  • Previous owners maintain - 7
Plan for the car is to keep it road worthy and in good mechanical nick, join Panda 4x4 UK club and have some play with other Northern forum members.

As it is now, I'm not willing to make any statement what needs to be done as I had only spend about 2h last week by checking and looking at the car in more details way.

That is my bigger worry for now - bloody milky coolant and a bit of mayo under the oil cap.

How can I confirm my head gasket theory not having coolant presure test kit???
@CLS - your not the only one - aparently it is bloody hard to buy cheepo 4x4 without blown thru head gasket.

The rest of the engine bay seems to be fine,

Did somebody in here mentioned a black silicone gunk as a fast repair?

Not the geniune steering wheel and speedo, which does not make much difference to me at all. Roofrack presence evidence

Dear FFCP section members, any comments, suggestions and observation are more than welcome, especcialy regards the 4x4 drive train i.e. leaks etc.
Cheers Andy, in this case I will fit the seat at the middle between the runners- not in line with steering wheel. Unfortunately due to touth ake seat will not be ready for weekend.

Done quick gearbox oil change as 20w50 won't last as long as ZC90.

Reason behind is that during las week of commuting the gbox winning sound ( saying noise is more appropriate) is getting louder.

Some odd sounds while slowly cruising. No noise when driving in gear with no acceleration, pedal in and its back. Dropping from 5th to 4th at 50mph is like F16 taking off.
At 50mph with clutch in no noise - just engine sound - which is actually good.

During oil change piece of tripod bearing circlip came with it - hard to say is it the new one or was is still remaining after the previous mess. Inspection will tell.
I thing I know what I will be doing on Saturday, g/box swap planned.

I've got few spares, but which one to go for?

'Can I have the old one please?' - standard request from me.

- Sounds like it could be sensitivity to torque input which may just be the input shaft 'front' (nearest the water) bearing on its way out.
Stop using it early and everything else may possibly be re-usable.

Good luck on the replacement's selection J.

Input shaft you say?
I do have some stock of input shaft bearings. Might have a lot inside to confirtm your remote diagnosis.

edit: Fresh oil didn't make much difference.
I've done some off the road trials at low speed with handbrake on.
At low speed it is more like crunching sound (3 times per 1 wheel rotation) so I'm expecting two possibilities:

- chewed needle rollers and tripod races,
- knackered diff bearing - no load -> no noise, when torque applied (accelerating or engine braking) -> a lot of noise.

Old oil had not much contamination of metal particles as bits of chewed needle rollers therefore me thinks - diff bearing.

Been at work in Sisley- do regret it now. Luckily didn't broke down but my heart was bleeding hearing them noised.

Completely shoot input bearing still possible, g/box case was getting really hot as well, hope it will manage to the unit before it will sized up completely.

Had few minutus to lift the front and check with stetoscope for sound source.
In neutral, free wheeling n/s wheel, rattling noise is getting more define while you're mowing the probe from bell end towards box end cover. From the end side it is located more towards rear which indicates output shaft bearing. I'm I correct in thinking that this can be swaped thru the end cover? Andy H?

Looks like I will give a go tommorow, both bearings wich i've got are the correct ones which goes under the end cap ( SKF 6204 ETN9 - Deep groove ball bearings, single row, premium, d=20,D=47, B=14).

@Andyholli do you still have the geaskets available? End cap and middle plate one would be required.

Yes - get the cover off and away you go..

He says...

Not easy to undo the lock nut on the end of the shaft - with the box out it's a case of taking out the selector mechanism and then selecting two gears together to stop the shafts turning while you undo the nut. - Difficult with the box in place, and time consuming.
Maybe take the end cover off and see if you can find the damaged bearing by looking and wiggling, then if it's worth the extra effort to replace the bearings in situ go for it.
If not too sure then go for gearbox removal and exchange.
Gaskets are always available - I just need to cut them and post them. See how it goes tomorrow.

Good luck.

No big rush with the gaskets Andy, my bearings are for the input shaft / clutch side so SKF 6305 ETN9 will be ordered today.

Took the end cover off, and first check shown masive play on the output shaft.
Managed to remove the bearing out with g/box still in situ.
It was not that easy to undo the nuts on both shaft - for the output one 4x4 was engage to add extra load with 4 wheels on ramps, input one was even harder so following you advice 1st gear was set and i've manually pushed 5th gear in place so the box was locked.
Bearing inner race and balls are badly worn.

I don't think my cat was using his laser sight today, looks more like stress fatigue.

New SKF bearing came in by post today.

Any idea how this might have happened? reckon it was the tripod bearing clip debris you mentioned before?

I doubt that the tripod race needle rollers remainings traveled that far, I do have industrial grade magnet pill stuck on the drain plug so any steel bits passing within 50mm get stuck on.

The actual gearbox was 'loud' from the day one, became even loder after Italy trip. Since then the noise was increasing. Recent meet at Freddy's was the final straw, as it was getting worse from day to day.

Outer race was removed in one piece, it did split itself overnight!!!

Thanks to our trusty gearbox specialist @andyholli gaskets arrived with post today, (I.O.Y )
Ready to take the challange tommorow, and attend Yorkshire Big Breakfast at Malton on Sunday morning.
