Punto (Mk1) My Sporting 1.2 16v in black

Introduction

I figured it was about time that I introduced you to my little project, she is a 1.2 16v Sporting in black and I am in love. As with all cars of this age she came with a few problems but I am progressively working through them as and when time and money will allow. So before I loose your interest with endless text take a little look at her just after I brought her (note I had given her a quick clean prior to these photos as she was filthy).

In fact this is a small example of the dirt.

So when I first picked her up (well within the first few months) I had some welding done and have under sealed the whole passenger underside, the drivers side doesn't really need welding and it would do if left a few years so I plan on doing it at some point in the near future and under sealing once its done.
I fitted a new lambda sensor and cat as emissions were reasonably high when she went for an MOT, she passed but it was touch and go and I wasn't convinced that I was getting the fuel economy I should have been. Since being fitted I get around 480 miles on a full tank instead of the 300 I was getting initially so I'm glad I made the decision.
Obviously she was given a very thorough service when she came under my ownership, I'm very glad I have half a clue as when I looked at the car the oil was barely showing on the bottom of the dipstick.. Straight home, fully serviced and treated to some lovely Castrol juice.

I also replaced the rear drivers trailing arm and it had excessive play, as I had it on stilts I also took the time to replace the section of brake hose connected to the drum as it had clearly seen better days. I also decided once finished that I should adjust the handbrake as it was taking around 5 clicks and I'm a stickler for a 3 click handbrake.

Since then I have just replaced/upgraded bits as they've gone, I recently fitted HID's when one of my bulbs died. (I know its naughty but they are very nice at night)

I also took the oppertunity to replace the sidelights with some nice white LED substitutes.

<-- Give them a little click to have a real look

I replaced the number plate bulbs as one was gone. In fact since the below photo I have changed them again for a brighter set as one died so I'll try to grab a little pick of them in action this evening.

That's pretty much all I've done to her over the 5 or 6 months that I've had her asides from cleaning the actual hell out of her.

She has some lacquer peel/car wash wounds of the top of the drivers door and a ding in the bonnet as someone has clearly shut it down with a tool on top of the engine.

There's also a rather nice door mark down the passenger door, otherwise she is in fairly good nick and under my ownership always gleaming. I will replace the damaged panels along our journey as I plan on having her around for many years to come, even if she's not my daily drive. I'll leave you now with a snap of how she stands now and as always I look forward to your comments.

bar the required welding thats not that bad at all really.. The rest of it easy and cheap to fix, and i suspect with a service and an italian tune up it would pass emissions as its wasn't far off passing as it is.
Well before I sold her she had a new flexi pipe and lambda sensor.. I'm assuming is because its been sat for a few months without running and also when she was in use it was to go less than 2 miles down the road to work and back.. Hardly ever getting up to temperature.. I wonder if a good blast out on the way to the MOT centre would do her some good..

should do, particularly in this case, get everything good and hot and at operating temperature for a prolonged period will burn off unwanted deposit build ups.

I'd let it warm up on idle, then go 'the long way' to the MOT test station with lots of heavy right foot or if you can get it on dual carriageway or motorway hold it in a low gear so its at high revs for a while.

So to update, I have picked up the Coupe, I'll try to download the forum app on my phone so I can upload you some pictures.. Cracking little car and I love the way this handles, I'm tempted to look into a 20VT as a daily driver..

The 16VT isn't without is problems though. The back box has collapsed and the internals were hanging out accompanied by a lack of power by the time I got home. A simple, temporary fix will be either punching the internals out or just disconnecting the backbox. The car doesn't feel as though it has a turbo so I'm hoping that changes once I've cleared it all out and the car can breathe again.

I'm supposed to be at the garage on Thursday to look at the fog light loom and hopefully get that working for the Punto's MOT. If I have spare time I'll see about maybe cutting the box open to empty then weld her back up.

Hopefully pictures up in a few mins, if not tonight when I'm back at home :)

Yay, pictures as promised. Just a few coupe snaps, I'll treat her to a clean and show you more at the weekend.

And my exhaust problem..

I've pulled a small carrier bags worth out, it feels slightly better but I know there's still so much in there!

I've found just 1 over the last month.. Hence I went to Devon and snapped it up seeing as it's been well looked after. I have receipts for over 25k of mechanical work since purchase and this one has done just 11,000 since 2004.

I'm not sure if I should put a 20VT in this shell as I know it's solid of just to buy one and use what's left of this for spares..

Either way this engine is going in the Punto, it's the only reason I got the car!

Here help me out..

Is there a manual clock version? Or is that just some custom work?

i would guess the centre is custom just by looking at it, i'm no coup aficionado myself though.

and good man, i have always fancied a 16vt punto (y)

Whether you drop a 20vt in this or get a 20vt and just keep that i guess depends largely on whether you find a really nice 20vt for a good price or whether you end up with one thats tatty round the edges.. My advice would be to concentrate on one car, get the punto done and finished and then come back to the coup situation - 2 ongoing projects in tandem is never a good idea imo.

Ah, yes Punto is my project. I plan now to drive the coupe until May when I will replace her and use the engine in the Punto.. Until then though project Punto only goes as far as an MOT and some dirt cheap motoring weekdays due to the tiny engine and lack of weight.

Just tempted to replace with a 20VT or buy a 20VT engine ready to put straight in place of the 16VT when I drag it out.

To answer my own question;

Late 1996, the interior also got an update. Some find it rather strange that it was the Pininfarina designed element that got updated rather than the exterior. But the new central console with analogue clock, new door cards, new handle bars at the B-pillar, radiator grill with rib design and a third brake light went down well with the buyers.

I would sign up but they have a ban on using "god" in usernames. If it's not Goddak it's 01goddak and has been for 14 years now..

The coupe section on here seems a little dead.. Is that going to be the same elsewhere though??

Merger in the making??

Or perhaps (I promise I won't it's illegal) I could make an unofficial cache of the site so that text information is retained??

No harm for personal reference. I've never been a member though so seems cheeky to sign up just to rob their material.. I've been a loyal FFer for too long now :)

Maybe as somebody in the web industry I'll try to make contact with Puntosports owners to see what the deal is with the site and their future plans.

Might be a bargain sale to be had?

i used it for queries about GT when i had it, seemed to me that more than anything else it was a GT forum. You have to be a paid up member to get to all the really good stuff though like the guides etc - my subscription has run out, i don't have a punto currently and the site seems like its been abandoned so not paying again

Might be worthy investment then if it truly is a wealth of knowledge. I can see that it's starting to get harder to find info already.. Time to future proof?

Fiat forum wiki?
