Seicento Project FS Sei

Introduction

It's certainly been a while since I've updated any motor info on here!

As FS celebrates it's 10th Birthday next year, we've been trying to find something that we can work on over the coming months and show off at the shows we attend in 2014.

This far north there simply isn't a used car market. Well, there is, but there's generally sod all on offer under a grand.

Saw this on ebay the other day and noticed it was for sale on here as well. The rest, as they say, is history.

We've quite a lot to do - bar cosmetics, the immediate plan is to get the rear suspension working again and replace a snapped exhaust. Already got shocks from a local factors and a replacement exhaust from the local scrappy for a tenner. Good times :)

Some de stickering and de light tinting has already taken place. Hopefully on Monday/Tuesday we'll replace the shocks, springs and exhaust. MOT is due in September so we want to get it ready for a pre-mot in the next few weeks :)

A long way to go but a fairly decent base to start from.

The interior has two bucket seats but they're fixed in place and I'm a short arse. Have been offered MK1 Punto Sporting seats, which I may well explore.

I'm under no illusion of how much we need to do to get this presentable, but already the amount of heads we've turned and enthusiastic waves we had on the drive back to Aberdeen is encouraging.

Watch this space.
As M60TYN is now on holiday an update on yesterdays work is going to have to come from me which means it might be slightly inaccurate so apologies in advance for any confusion. First of all a recap on what Yellow failed it's MOT on

001 Brakes imbalanced across an axle

002 Horn sounds harsh or grating

003 Nearside rear seat belt retracting mechanism defective

004 Offside rear seat belt retracting mechanism defective

005 Offside front seat belt retracting mechanism defective

006 Nearside steering rack gaiter insecure

007 Nearside windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively

008 Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive

So yesterday we headed back to the shed to take a look at things despite this supposedly being a weekend off.

Who am I kidding... we don't do weekends off :D Thanks to lewisp and his mate Stuart for taking a look at Yellow for us

3 & 4 were easily sorted by Stuart with a bit of lubrication however the drivers seat belt requires a spacer.

The white paper test over the exhaust suggest the cat is ok and there was no obvious lambda issue. We're still not sure if the timing is out but we'll hopefully find out when we head back to the shed in 2 weeks time - I'm insisting on having next weekend off but then again I said that this weekend...

Things that are needed

Punto 1242 airbox
drivers side seatbelt spacer
New horn - maybe going down the air horn route for this
New wiper blade

As we were lacking a trolley jack and there wasn't much else we could do to Yellow without one we turned our attention to a very sorry looking FiaSco.

M60TYN has been itching to get going with the grinder ever since he bought it and the generator was acquired. Finally today that time arrived - the last time I saw him looking so happy was after rather a lot of vodka at last years Xmas meet

The generator was fired up, safety goggles put on (FF/FS H&S insisted) and the grinder put to work removing the stupid pointless pink rollbar.

The shed emptied at this point as Lewis and Mike legged it closely followed by me after I very hurridly took this picture and moved the water closer to FiaSco just in case.

After which the expert took over :worship:

No safety goggles for Stuart because that's the way he rolls (and as he isn't a member of FF/FS I couldn't nag him into wearing them)
After quite a bit of swearing and a lot more sparks the rollbar was nearly off but still needed a bit more persuasion which the boys were happy to provide. I'm not posting the video of it here as this is a family site and it's slightly NSFW and more than a tad disturbing

Very nearly there

20131026_122134.jpg

And finally goodbye stupid pointless pink rollbar

20131026_122155.jpg

Well, maybe not quite goodbye

20131026_122258.jpg

Can only be an improvement on a corsa

With the rollbar off it was a quick trip to Halfrauds to buy a trolley jack (with the help of a trade card) that will reside permanently in the shed so we're never lacking one again and then we called it a day.

More updates soon.
gadge we've not forgotten your very generous offer and M60TYN will send you a pm about it when he gets back from his holiday

Plan of attack for next Saturday is to try and get to the bottom of the emissions issue.

Anyone who's familiar with the full workings of the 1.2 engine is more than welcome (encouraged even!) to join us. We've managed to soldier on to this point, but know we need a bit of expert opinion as to whats wrong. Timing has been mentioned a few times now as a possible issue and it'd be ace if we could determine if this is the case - or not.

If anyone is in the area, and free for a couple of hours to help/advise it'd be very much appreciated (y)

Hopefully get some good updates here next weekend :)

Thanks :)

Quick update - as it's been a while.

Basically we're not any further along. FiaSco is still in the process of being ripped apart, Yellow had the cat disconnected to be checked so we can get emissions fixed and the car MOTd. Cat seems fine, as suspected, so this still requires some investingation. There are several theories which we'll test next weekend.

Need yellow off of the ramps this weekend as they're needed off site, so I'll reconnect exhaust and push off (as TB is also in a partial state of undress)

On the FiaSco front - we're having a Festive Fix It meet next Saturday (as quite a few of our core members on FS are off next weekend and can make it to Aberdeen :D) where we're going to work on both cars (hopefully)

I'm off to our local scrap yard today, where I'm hoping I can secure a new floor pan for FiaSco for a decent price. We have a fabricator or two among the team, and having a new floor & sills more or less ready to grind and weld in will save a huge amount of time so it's worth at least exploring.

No more broken cars in the shed I said but no one ever listens to me .

Technically it's less than half a car but I'm going to have fun explaining this one later :D

Anyway, the floorpan for FiaSco is now onsite along with lots more goodies than we anticipated and all for free too - well a tenner for someone's hard work.

An update on the work done to Yellow will follow later as we're all a little bit knackered after a long day

OK...sit rep on this weekends progress.

Yellow - throttle body was swapped over from FiaSco, exhaust was resealed and reattached, water pump was removed and new instant gasket fitted to try and stop the leak. More on that in a mo. We also swapped that elusive 4th spark plug which had apparently been hidden behind the TB, and it also turns out one of the HT leads hadn't been connected properly. Erm, oops :D

FiaSco - a little bit of stripping has continue - brakes and a header tank are on their way out, but again progress here is slow.

The red shell - gutted. We took as much off in the breakers yard as we thought neccessary, turns out the entire dash/steering wheel/steering coloumn was left for us so we'll have a few bits up for sale in the coming days to try and raise pennies for the project kitty (y)

So yeh, yellow...we returned yesterday to re-fit the header tank, top up coolant, swap brakes over from FiaSco and (hopefully) be a step nearer to finishing. Sadly it wasn't to be.

Plumbed everything in, topped up coolant and gave the car a jump start to get the engine (and pumps) going again. Sadly within about 30 seconds it was clear that our gasket repair hasn't made any difference. So it's looking like we'll have to replace the pump, which is frustrating as there aren't many of us there on a regular basis who can do the timing. That said, it looks like MrCento and Abyss (who originally began the project) may be heading up to lend a hand :)

^Yellow, as she was idling yesterday.

Getting there, slowly but surely. It's just frustrating that every time we think we've nailed it we're finding new faults. Still, could be worse...

Massive thanks btw to Marti155, Johnno933, Boydie, Lewisp and Stuarty for all their help this weekend.

Don't worry too much, just have a go. Its well covered in the cinq haynes and there is a guide in the guides section on here too.
Just get the timing marks lined up before you take belt off and its super easy. The belt will have 2 lines on it as well and they will line up with the timing marks on the pulleys and then you have double checked the timing ;)
Nothing to worry about if you get it wrong with these engines being non-interference type. If you get it wrong you just take it off and try again, not like other engines where if you get it wrong valves hit pistons etc.

Hi Blu,

Everyone keeps telling us it's easy - and I've no doubt it is - but I'm mechanically dsylexic. I'm ok once I've done something a couple of times, but really do need that helping hand.

Thankfully we think we've a couple of additional mechanics coming up to help teach some of us on timing so I'll be sure to get my hands dirty and have a go!!

Massive Yellow and Fiasco Updates!

Yesterday we were joined by Abyss and Mrcento, who originally did the work on Yellow (engine swap etc) before selling up.

We managed to get the new water pump fitted - thankfully this one came with the holy grail of a rubber gasket. Phew. Turns out the old one was fine, it was just missing some silicone round an edge. Cam and Shims were robbed from FiaSco, to sort out the tappety issue. Braw. Coolant temp sensor was swapped, as was the MAF. This had a sizeable tear in the pipe, which seemed to help with idling. Brakes were cleaned up - she stops on a dime and doesn't pull to either side now (y)

So... apart from a little rough running (ECU re-learning itself as battery keeps flattening?) we think Yellow may be ready for MOT. Fingers crossed we'll be lucky second time around ;)

Fiasco's fate remains undecided. The engine is just about out, and certainly wont be reused that's for sure. The problem we face just now is that we may not have as long in the shed as first thought. For the amount of work required to get FiaSco presentable we're wondering if we should revert to our Plan B....construct something different from FiaSco and find ourselves a new shell to work with, from scratch.

The way things are with the original shell, we could be months just getting it prepped and ready...and we only have months left with the current shed it seems :(

Not quite, but nearly there...

Almost certain we have spare front springs in the shed - the lamda issue seems to be dividing opinion though.

Found this on ebay
which I gather would fit, but then there's a train of thought that it may simply be a vacuum leak causing the lamda reading to go potty. And what's frustrating is it's so close in terms of numbers.

Meh.

Well a couple of hours up at the shed (again) today

Remember that spring that we thought was ok before the last MOT??

Oops :/

So yeh...front now sits nicely on the springs which Marti155 donated to us months back. Cheers mate

As yet there's no sign of the replacement lambda sensor, so thats a job for Monday or Tuesday evening. Thanks again to lewisp for his help. He also managed to get the anti roll bar bushes replaced on Izzy (his ibiza), even though it meant an impromptu trip to Persley for a new clamp and bolts

All being good well swap the lambda one evening this week and present yellow for retest.

Lambda was fitted on Monday night - 30 seconds all in (y)

Quite hopeful this will be enough to sneak the lambda readings back under the limit :D We're not too far above as it stands so a proper Bosch unit fitted and the car warmed up before tomorrows retest and we'll see what happens!!

give it an italian tune-up on way, ask him to do emissions first when you arrive and the CAT is still as hot as hell. Or ask him to rev the tits off it for a min to get it hot.. CAT is along way down the exhaust compared to most cars on the spi cento's, just sat idling the cat isn't really upto to full operating temps ;)

Good Luck!
