Panda (Classic) Bo the Selecta.

Introduction

For the story so far please see this thread.................

https://www.fiatforum.com/auction-watch/320653-my-selecta.html

This is VmanC really, although Barbara (Panda Mo) may contribute now and again as it's her car. :)

So, Gavin and I bought this from Aston Martin just before, out of desperation, he did something silly with it. I told Barbara that Gavin and I had bought some spares between us, Gavin having some roof bars and me an auto gearbox for my green Selecta, I did not mention that they were connected to a complete car.

It could well have been that this Selecta would be stripped for what it could provide for other Pandas, that was my plan had it turned out to be a basket case. Fortunately the positives far outweighed the negatives so I was very pleased that my hopes for this car were confirmed once I'd looked it over and driven it. :)

It does have a number of issues that need sorting but basically it has very little rust and drives well.

Barbara needs a higher than standard driving position, being short in the body, so the Alfa 147 seats that are currently in Oslo will be transferd into Bo. The height adjuster on the drivers seat will allow Barbara to find a comfortable driving position whilst allowing me to drive it without the top of my head being pressed against the roof lining.

Other than some nice wheels I would think that the rest of Bo will remain standard but improved. Here are some pics of how he is now........

Nice to see you saved it Vernon (y) Strange it should find it's way to you eventually, i tried to buy this car when it first came up on Gumtree but the woman said she couldn't sell it until she'd found another car  i remember you saying how you'd called up and got the same answer from her! Nowt strange as folk as they say :D Glad it ended up with you in the end, no better place for a panda in need of tlc :)

I think you're thinking of a different Selecta, this was Aston Martins Selecta, he was trying to get rid of it for months.

Thanks for reminding me Jamie, I'd completely forgotten that was this car.

At the time I phoned up about it I had a customer with a duff Selecta ( the green one that I now own and plan to change to a manual), they'd asked me to look for another one for them. I got the same story as you, that they were waiting to get another car before they could let it go, next thing I knew Adam had bought it!

Well now that Barbara has it, and loves it, I think it will be staying put for a good while. I must try and coax her into posting her thoughts on the subject.

Been meaning to update this thread for ages!

Well Bo's been in regular use since we bought him and although the gearbox is a little noisy at idle it has driven very well with no issues.

I have replaced the broken headlamp, and fitted a less dented bonnet.

Barbara gets annoyed by the behaviour of some other motorists towards Pandas so one of her main requests was to have a loud horn, well now she has one..........

Twin horns hidden behind the bumper and wired in through a relay does the trick. Barbara's already frightened two old men with them. :)

While I was fitting the horns I found a rusty hole under the front o/s wheel arch. I'm afraid I didn't think to take pics until I'd plated and primed it......

Also found a big split in the cv boot of the inner o/s cv joint. Now the Selecta drive shafts are different to the manual boxes, fortunately, in that they don't have to keep the gearbox oil in. I did have a spare so it was simply a matter of fitting it.

I've also painted the front grille, touched up the paintwork, especially on the B pillars, and generally polished the bodywork.
I had some steel wheels I acquired a while back that I thought i'd try on it too. Tyres are 165/70/13's..........

At the moment there are a couple of jobs to do, change door locks, trace petrol smell, fix the heater tap/cable, hopefully I can sort them out this week, other jobs allowing.

Hooray! That would be good. I'm fed up with the number of people that comment on the strong smell of petrol and it would be great to have a heater before the snow starts. Still at least the clock works! :)

Looks like a different car, nice work! I'm beginning to realise the difference a nice set of wheels can make to some pandas after seeing this and CLS's Beta alloys. Very nice indeed and far more important than some silly petrol leak :p

Herbie has a hot oil smell, I prefer 'bos petrol smell.

I mistimed a run into the town centre earlier, got stuck in traffic for 30 minutes. Really could have used the Selecta.

On those wheels she looks like a 4x4. (y)

Fuel smell is now sorted, took some fixing though. :( In the end we traced it to this..........

You can see cracking around the little black blob in the lower r/h side of the pic. The green fizz turned out to be really rusty underneath so is now a spares car. I don't like to kill Pandas but it really was the best thing for it as everything attached to the rotten body is good and will serve other Pandas well. I mention this because it gave up its tank unit for Bo as well as all its locks, we had to swap them all even though Bo only needed door locks because they were all on the one key.

When we swapped the tank unit we also found that the fuel pipe elbow was cracked and leeking so we had to repair this too. The fuel smell has now been scent packing. See what I did there :p.

Last job on the list was the heater. We pinched the nut and screw from the Fizz that attached the heater cable to the valve so that now works smoothly, but we still weren't getting any heat. A back flush through the system did the trick though so we're ready for the winter. :)

I really love driving my Bo! There is no petrol smell any more and it cosy warm and the clock keeps brilliant time!
It's due a MOT next month so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will pass because Vernon will start on the next round of improvements which hopefully will start with the interior which is a bit damp smelling at the moment.
That's it for now.

I have found out why my car smells damp. The rain enters through the top of the driver's door! I have to wear a waterproof in the car! So I don't like all this rain!

Mot due this month. Fingers crossed that it passes!
