Panda (Classic) Fizzle :)

After changing two HT leads - the injected ones are different to carbed ones so I only had one from each of the sets I acquired (one from@firstcary10 at mitcar thanks andrew) I could use. No arcing but still an awful smell of fuel when running still.
Any ideas if it's not the unburnt fuel in the exhaust system causung the fumes?
Oh I guess the third set of leads from ebay will be wrong too - at least Sky panda will be sorted for a few years then.

you're on carb tech so i would check your fuel lines under the air box for perishing.. also run the engine with the airbox off.. have a look at the carb and see if theres any fuel coming up from the float chamber underneath.
if so it could be the float no working right.. its an easy fix though.. just bend the little tab inside to make the float sit higher :)

I just thought it may be the filler neck pipe as you have had plenty of different size wheels on Fizzle, plus because I am now paranoid about them! I have a spare 2wd one if you need it, but check all the pipes etc. as John says aswell, it must be a leak somewhere to smell that bad.

No leaks have been detected :(

I gave up and took it over to Allen Fletcher's - he's only a few miles from me.

He kindly gave me a new fuel filler cap to try as mine was building out ridiculous amounts of pressure (and perhaps forcing fumes/fuel out of the unions/joints?).

Anyway since fitting it the fumes seem to have lessened though not gone.

At least I don't feel that Fizz will spontaneously combust at any moment now!

At the very limits of my mechanical competency I fitted these:

Yes the left one is a bit wonky despite being in the exact place as the right one

They are the same as mine, though obviously in better condition. I think they look great! Interestingly my left one is wonky too :ROFLMAO:

I'm impressed John. As someone who shares a similar mechanical aptitude (and attitude) with you, that's worth a :slayer:

After a couple of weeks worth of roadworks outside both Sky and Fizz where both in need of a good wash. Sky with his metallic paint is a doddle to give a quick once over, Fizz and his oxidizing paint is not.

After a quick swill off and dry - with lots of rust brown paint on the drying cloth I decided to break out the G3 and give it a once over.

After a good hour and only having covered the bonnet and half of one side I decided it was time to invest in a polishing machine.

A quick trip to World of Tools (or something similar) exchanged a days wages for a IOP (idiot operated polisher) and I was away, three short hours later one very red car :D

I can only say wow!, so easy and such a good job I even did the alloys!

Here's the results :)

Still stinks of petrol now and again (the now being rough roads) still loads of back pressure in the tank (quite a satisfying hiss taking the cap off) but at least he looks more shiney than scrappage.

Petrol smell is still an issue, it is strong even with the engine off. I've changed all the HT leads to cure the missing spark but still it persists.

It's got to be a leak somewhere in the engine bay, I just can't find it!

I think I need a collective nose of panderers at the Yorkshire meet to have a sniff on Saturday!

Well within a few minutes the collective nose found the leak :)

It's coming from the top of the fuel tank where the pipes go in and out. Accessible from the hole under the rear seats it is swimming in petrol

The nut which holds the two pipes in the plastic is just spinning around so I can't even inspect the seals.

I suspect I will have to replace the whole part, anyone got a part number as usual I can't find anything on eper apart from confusing lists of numbers and diagrams which don't look anything like what I'm looking at.

I'll post a picture when my technology decides to cooperate!

Well good old partsworld have given me a quote for slightly less than I bought Sky panda for for just the pump assembly.

Part No 46537626

Can be bought from europe for half the price but it doesn't include all the seals and fittings for the ancillaries on top which I suspect is what is leaking, the pump works fine though.

Before I do something drastic like contact our favourite panda breaker :)eek:) anyone got an injected panda pump assembly sitting around doing nowt?
