Punto (Mk1) My 1996 Punto GT2 'Rose'

Introduction

I picked Rose up in March, she is a replacement for my old GT in the same colour called Lilly - who had 13 previous owners and many gremlins as a result. After breaking Lilly I wasn't really on the lookout for another GT but after browsing Autotrader one day saw the car and had to have her.

I was after an original GT in the same Rosso Bright as Lilly. The first owner was an elderly gentleman who owned it for 13 years to pop down the shops, full Fiat SH every 5K and little expense spared mechanically. Then another mature guy picked it up, covered approx 2K and then left it sat in a garage for three years while the tax/MOT etc...had all well expired. Mileage was 65K so suitable for some good use in my ownership.

Plan from day 1 was to keep this original and relatively standard.....49/50 are now modified so although this is not a ground breaking project it is a guide into owning a 16 year old car whilst improving / updating things.

Took a quick pic on getting her home. First job was the MOT.

Almost to my disbelief she went straight through the MOT with no advisories.

My first purchase was a dull but necessary one, some nice OE floor mats as the car was not supplied with any.

Next job was a full service and cambelt change, fortunately I had a spanking new Aux / PAS belt in packaging left over from Lilly so that went on too.

Everything went smoothly and I spent a few smooth weeks enjoying the car.

I have kept the original Cassette player supplied with the car for potential show use or for when the car goes on to its next owner. I tried to persevere but damn cassettes are annoying so in went a CD player for now.

Very little wear to the seats, wheel or leather gear knob all looks and feels like new to be honest. With that in mind the plastic door sills were changed both sides to new items I had from Lilly and the interior door handles renewed so even the plastics looked and felt new again. As far as the interior goes I am happy with it now, it looks and feels new (apart from the slightly dated design). I am meant to be picking up a full OE leather interior soon so that really would finish it off.

Did a long trip to Wales one weekend helping the other halves sister out with a house move and lost electricity on a very wet day on the M4. Replaced regulator pack x 2 but car kept leaving me stranded after a few more days use. Got an new exchange Lucas alternator, fitted and things have been faultless again since.

The Rad looked very sad!!! understatement of the year; so this was changed for a new genuine Fiat item. This cost me £30 instead of £260 as part of a new old stock deal!

Started to get a bad knock from the front D/S suspension over pot holes so disassembled for inspection. Found bushes in good shape but shock absorber on front D/S had bust open spewing fluid everywhere. Replaced both front dampers with Sachs OE + SuperTouring dampers, did both track rod ends and steering arms too. Also replaced one of the ARB bushes as looked suspect.

Front now feels really tight, with new front tyres and tracking done handles pretty sweetly for its age. Really happy. Mechanically she is up there and the interior is in a good place. Next update will be to start sorting the bodywork / wheels out and getting them looking new again.

Gave her a wash and wax over the weekend.

Am trying to retain all the supplying dealer stickers / number plates / tax disc holder but the front numberplate looks pretty shocking so need to get a new one sadly.

Updates Soon.

Looks Good and the engine bay is pristine and immaculate for its age!

How much did you pay for it?

Thank you, all I will say was the price was very good for its condition ;)

Ah i wondered when a thread might appear, she looks great fella (y) always good to see an original GT. Gotta say though, needs either clear side repeaters of the oem orange indicators putting back on - but i'm sure you already know that lol

The indicators and side repeaters are OEM, oddly Fiat fitted clear indicators but orange side repeaters on standard cars....may fit clear repeaters at some point but will lose some originality if I do. I remember when your GT had orange repeaters Blu think it was the first thing Alex changed.

On a side note anyone know why a pic of the car doesn't appear in the thread title within the Members Motors page? Is there a way of doing this or is it because I haven't donated?

Last weekend Rose got a pressie,

Picked these original GT2 Leathers up from a friend a couple of weekends ago just to finish the interior off.

I can't emphasise what great condition these are in. They still look and more importantly smell new. I had them in Lilly my old GT for not more than a couple of months, then Rich picked them up and barely used them, now I have them back again so gone full circle!

Next move - I am VERY tempted to get one of those stainless Dr EEEEVIL Cat Back systems with the tailpipe that locates behind the bumper so the standard theme is still retained.

Your worrying about it being original and having orange side repeaters but you want to change the exhaust :confused:I've had similar desires to start modifying things, even bought a load of parts and then decided it would be a shame to mod the car.. Still got the orange repeaters and the oem fiat centre caps to go on, and my recirc valve. But Molly is currently sat uninsured and unMOT'd, not that there is anything wrong with her, i just cannot afford to run her atm. :(

Yeah unless you are on mega bucks it is hard going running more than 1 car per household at the moment :( no matter what your position.

Don't get me wrong I would be keeping the standard exhaust as well so I could swap them over, would just be so I have a sporty one too that sat behind the bumper out of site. From a distance the Dr Evil's look no different to standard bar the S/S finish. I wouldn't plan on doing much more to be honest and any things I will do will be reversible easily.

Well just some updates,

A couple of weeks ago I stopped in Waitrose for 5 minutes to grab some supplies for work, got back in the car and it had a horrid misfire below 3K rpm.

Borrowed an AFM off a friend the same day and it fixed the problem, so ordered a Bosch one in and fitted - car back to good old self.

Last weekend the starter motor stuck, so just to keep the car reliable and be on the safe side decided to buy a new Hella one. Am hopefully going to fit this afternoon (with any luck).

Apart from the above and some basic service items such as air filter, fuel filter, plugs etc...I have just changed the oil every 5K and enjoyed the car, no problems at all. Car going better than ever.

I would like to add some pics but really have nothing too exciting to add.

I did change the silver air duct which runs from the rear of the engine bay down to the alternator as mine had started to disintegrate at the lower end. No longer available from Fiat so had to order some of the right stuff over from the good ol' US of A fits perfectly and looks OE.

Pics in next update when car is clean again!

1.4 8v turbo, but the old 1.6 sporting block is the same family and can be used to make a 1.6 turbo engine but clearly would require expensive pistons etc to make it work.

Wikipedia said:
The top of the range model was the 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp) 1.4 GT, using an evolution of the turbocharged 128 SOHC engine originally found in the Fiat Uno Turbo Mk II- capable of running over 200 km/h (120 mph) and reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.9 seconds and came fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox. During the years the GT was made in three different "series" with power 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp) (1993–1995),133 PS (98 kW; 131 hp) (1995–1997) and 130 PS (96 kW; 130 hp) (1997–1999)

You think your sporting is fun to drive, you just have to have a go in one of these!!

Link here Chris!

This fits pefectly once cut to length and more importantly is identical construction and finish to the original! Much better than the awful looking Halfords replacements which don't even fit on 100% let alone look right. It might seem a lot of money for a bit of hose but it looks and fits right.

He's a really helpful chap, packed well and arrived all the way from Texas in under a week!

It is an alternator cooling hose and just helps the alternator breath due to its location buried way down backing on to the turbo, so gets pretty hot too even with its little heat shield!

ah fair enough... another random thing i never seen on another car, the round fan housing and pipework thing under the battery had me confused for quite some time as well lol. But i understand its for cooling the injectors or something. Was told to remove it as its not really required in UK as its a bit cooler i guess than the continent but i like it stock so left it. Same i suppose applies to this bit of pipe - there is no way its helping keep anything cool on Molly, its in about 4 pieces but somehow still there lol.

I can't believe how long it has been since I last posted any updates mainly because ownership has been fun but uneventful! Also been busy getting married etc...

Back in around November the clutch slave cylinder exploded dumping brake fluid everywhere and dropping the pedal to the floor. A quick call to Euro Car Parts and some fresh fluid later and by the next day she was fully functional again. The clutch slave cylinders are a known weak point on the Mark 1 so if yours is on the original it may be on borrowed time!

Changed the thermostat for a new one before the cold snap along with fresh fluids, flush etc before Xmas. Definately heats the car up quicker but not 100% happy with where the gauge is sitting on normal driving as on my old GT used to sit around 1/3rd up on normal cruising when it had a new stat, now it is on half or just below/over all the time. So one of the next jobs is to get a genuine thermostat from Fiat rather than a motor factors special and change the temeprature senders with new Fiat items to make sure all is well. Car running nicely so doubt there is too much wrong going on.

Next job is a brake overhaul as pedal is getting very sloppy. New discs, pads, fluid & lines should hopefully do the trick. Finding them a bit marginal especially in all this poor weather lately.

Also waiting on a quote for a full respray but will see where it comes out at.

Promise some piccies next post out!
