Panda (Classic) My white '88' 4x4.

Introduction

Well Charmania has one, as does the blue clx and Barbara's 4x4, so I'm starting a thread for my white 4x4 in order to keep a record of the work in one place. :)

This was it when I first took ownership about 18 months ago. It had just come out of a five year period of storage and had no tax or mot, 54,000miles on the clock, but did look to be in pretty good condition.

After closer inspection at home I found it to be really really good :). only one area of rust thanks to it being thoroughly waxed from new. This was the usual area at the back of the sill, only the o/s though, the n/s was fine. This had to be repaired for the mot but I can't remember much being needed.........

I soon had it all polished up and fitted some alloys........

About a year ago while I was servicing it disaster struck :(. When I removed one of the spark plugs a tiny piece of metal fell into the cyl. without me knowing, so when I started the engine it made one hell of a racket. I had to remove the head to get it out and renewed the cambelt and tensioner at the same time.
Unfortunately the big end bearing in that cyl. had suffered. I drove it like this till last November and then decided i would change the engine for a 40,000 miler I had spare. This engine change was an excuse to completely refurb the engine bay. I moved workshops while doing this so a month became three, then the front suspension was done too, so three months became six etc. etc.

Anyway, it was all done by April this year.............

More recently the fun stuff has started. Alloy wheels were changed for 127 Palio alloys I painted black and white. I also tracked down a wheel arch trim kit from Italy. New 4x4 decals were fitted to the rear wings, and a radio/cassette with four speakers were fitted to the interior.......

This is how it currently stands but further upgrades are in the pipeline. A sump guard is in the making and a pair of Boulder bars (I think that's what they're called) will follow.........

The bar in the last pics was just a test piece and is too short, the final bars will run the full length of the sill. They're made of 35mm tubing, a nice small size just right for Pandas but because they have a diamond pattern pressed into them they are as strong as much larger tubing :)

I'm trying to make all non original parts removable so that it can easily be returned to standard, I know some some people prefer this.

It's also been to a few car shows recently and gets a lot of positive feedback from the general public, especially with the Panda tent on the back. In fact six weeks ago at the Beaulieu Italian car day it was voted joint runner up by the attending public, tying will a Lamborghini Gallardo. The Lambo only managed it because it was a special edition they only made 250 of and named it after one of their test drivers :p.

Phew, that's pretty much up to date now so will post any future work from here.
They were doing runs every half hour, some of them went on the other trips but it was still a small percentage of what was there. To be honest what was there could be seen in any supermarket car park, I was hoping for at least one Hummer, or maybe a super raised Toyota Hiace (or Surf, Kev.) but no. There were a couple of nice VW Golf Country's, but that was it.

Gavin, I think you were lucky not to go on the course, given how much you've just spent on your shiney new sump guard. It would at least have been scratched back to bare alloy.

Nice one Vern...(y)...well done.

That's what the sump guard is for anyway..:)....should have bought the Toyota down if the whole lifted truck type of thing was not there. Plus ive been adding stuff to it lately...:D

Well maybe, but as Kev said that's what it's for! Still would have liked to do it - next year hopefully if it's on again (y)

Vernon, that sentance wasn't complete - you mean "could be seen in any supermarket car park, or, parked on a zebra crossing near a school & half on a pavement, near you". Of course if we are talking some of the hideous BMW/Audi/Porsche things, we should add "jumping speed bumps at ridiculous speeds in a pedestrian area" to their many other taste crimes.......... ;)

Well I have a load of pics on the camera depicting the build up of the new interior but left it at the workshop. I'll upload them tomorrow but for those who didn't see the nearly finished results at the Thoresby show here's a few taken this evening with my phone...........

Even if you did see it on Monday you wouldn't have seen today's addition of the steering wheel, pinched from Barbara's 4x4. Don't worry, I'm getting her another one anyway.

I'm falling in love with every one of your panda's. Looking even more forward to seeing pics of the Terra now :D

Nice website by the way, but now you've said where your lockup is..

On a more serious note, white panda with black alfa seats.. :worship:

Thanks Nathan, you're not that far away so welcome to pop up any time (y).

I'd be really tempted, thanks for the offer :)

Need to get the Panda on the road, having a problem with said linkage bolt that sheared it's thread. Living on the island i've not yet driven on a motorway yet, but had my liscence nearing five years and dad said he'd sit with me and give me support getting used to it. Can't be much different to the only duel carriageway here :p (I think he knows the area well).

To be honest i didn't know you were so close, you've possibly made me more determined now. I just need to drill the M7 hole out and fit the m8, work out why she's revving a bit high stationary and hopefully she should pass ;) ( i say, probably a bit too confidently..)

Ok, got the camera today so here's the pics of the interior build. Rewind to last Friday when I decided it would be a good idea to fit the new interior for the Thoresby show .

Only managed to get one door panel and one rear panel finished in time, the other side is done now though. The rear panel is simply finished in the same material as the dash but the door panel has an extra padded section covered in black vinyl.

Old seats, dash and carpet removed.

New sound proofing fitted.

New dash fitted. The carpet was a problem, the one I wanted to use was from a 2WD with cable shift and I hadn't noticed that under the centre console that hides the cables the carpet is cut right down the middle, with the 4x4 not having a centre console this split would show. I hunted round my Pandas and spares to see if any had a suitable carpet, the only one that was the right colour was in Farmyard, a 1000 CL I'd bought a while ago, and the carpet lived up to the car's nickname. A good scrub and hoover worked wonders but there were still some dodgy patches. I had some black fabric paint left from doing the under bonnet soundproofing so used that to refresh the poor areas, Result! :)

The dash was a straightforward replacement of the old one.

Back seat went in next.

The front seats were last to go in. When I'd fitted non-Panda seats before I drilled holes through the floor to bolt them in but from now on I wanted to ensure that in the future someone could go back to original and not have holes left in the floor, so I designed a subframe that used the original seat mountings. So late Sunday night I was welding up a couple of these. They didn't get painted for the show but have now recieved a coat of primer and satin black top coat.

Today I decided I'd improve the tailgate inner panel too so have made one up and covered it in scrim foam, then black vinyl.

That's pretty much it for this car. I'm sure I'll think of a couple more touches before it goes, like a second set of wheels with road tyres, those knobblies were a little wearing on the long trip to Thoresby :(. I have a set of Lancia alloys that will do the job once they're painted black and white. :)

Hey Nathan, looks like we're coming to you next weekend. (y)

There's two car shows on the island, Saturday's is at Newport Quay, Sunday's at Ryde sea front. The Ferry's booked and we'll be at both with this Panda, say hello if you're about.

I'll have a look at my hours tomorrow ;)

Newport Quay is usually a good one, there's a guy that goes every year with an immaculate Strada as well as the odd 500 etc. Would be the first Panda i've seen there (y)

I suppose if i am down for working, it's not too late to swap with someone.. my contract includes sundays so that's a no go, so would be the newport show.
I wish the colour was road legal, would have been nice seeing it with another panda. :p

I usually go to this but am at Goodwood this year :).
Nathan126 The red Strada 105TC is Steve's from the Fiat Motor Club, but I don't know why you've never seen a Panda as my 4x4 Sisley was there 3 years ago (y) Last couple of years I have been in different 127's - last year was bright turquoise so you can't have missed that at Ryde - next to the 2 red Strada's and white 125?
VmanC I know there will be at least a couple of people from the FMC there this year. Numbers are down a bit this time as one stupidly got married, and I'm taking Dad to Goodwood for a "special" birthday! If you want to try to park together etc, let me know & I'll throw an email address your way

Have fun - both good shows & very different. I prefer the Sunday on the seafront (hear the salt munching into the bodywork :bang: ), but that's only because I find the Newport one a bit cramped on the quay.

I don't often go to the Ryde one, don't know why.. i guess Newport seems to attract more attention. I have been a couple of times, i remember a Delorean made up to be a replica of the back to the future car. If i can i usually go to Newport and have a good look at the cars, mainly italian/british cars but they all deserve credit. I remember a little white Vespa car and loved the look of it, but i can't remember the year it was. Maybe i didn't go to that one or just missed your Panda, i would have taken an interest as i had a 4x4 when i was 14, not a Sisley though. I'm glad to be in touch through here to people with the same interest, i've only met one forum member and that was through club126uk. You're right about the 127's, forgot to mention them.. i have seen a 125 at one. Quite a while ago there was talk of the 126 club turning up to the event, maybe now Mick lives here (BIS13 on club126) there may be more chance.. i'll have a look on that forum if i get chance. Hope i do get the saturday off

Oops lost a year  2008 I took the Sisley but can't find pics. 2009 & 2010 there was the Palio, and 2011 the turqoise 127. Here's Newport 2009 but doesn't give much sense of the scale of the event.

Could take a Panda next year if anyone wanted to get some together

Thanks Gavin, I spoke to Neil about this the day before his wedding, he passed me on to Vic. the organiser. Thanks for the offer but I think we'll just turn up and see where they put us, we want to leave half an hour early so need to be where we can get out. (y)

Spent some time cleaning up ready for the two shows this weekend on the Isle of white. I hadn't done anything under the car since I went round the offroad course at Beaulieu so I wasn't looking forward to this in case I had done some damage.

As it turned out mud was the only problem for everywhere except the sump guard, it had been scratched quite alot but was soon brought back to life with a jet wash and a fresh piece of black vinyl.

I'd bought some clear underbody wax from Bilt Hamber, it can be sprayed on to suspension components, wheels etc, as well as the underbody in order to protect them through the winter, so after a jet wash I applied it everywhere under the car.

It's great stuff, because it's clear everything retains it's normal appearance. I did put it on a little thick under the rear wheel arches and it did then start to look yellowy, but at least it's all protected. (y)

Also found this pic from a couple of years ago that I don't think I've ever posted.

:D

Was nice meeting you today Vern, this panda is a huge credit to you (y)

I'll upload pics here for you as well as creating a thread for the other cars in non-fiat section when i get chance.

I really enjoyed it and even my parents had a nice time, hopefully my Colour will be on the road for next year ;)

Thanks Nathan, was good to meet you and your family too (y), shame we didn't have time to see your Panda.

Thanks for the pics, :) great job. If you can give me a link to the thread you start for your other pics I'll add mine to it, but for now here's three of the Panda.........
