Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
well heres a cold start video.. and the issues i am having with talon. which it so kindly demonstrated on camera. make sure you watch the end..

think im going to go back to carb again. the prices of fuel pumps put me way way off this little project. i personally think it kinda insane to charge £200 for a "half decent" in-line fuel pump when you can pick up an OEM in tank fuel pump from some well known car brand for a fraction of the cost.

fuel economy is absolutely appalling too 20 miles took away half a tank of fuel, and i have no fuel leaks :(

was nice though when it worked to have instant start and drive.. sigh

Shame you're ditching this interesting project but I still stand by theres nothing wrong with a carb in UK climate. Tonight it was -3, I had to do some serious de-icing before I could see but my carb fired up instantly, no issue, choke out, 2 pumps of accelerator, choke back in and turn key, not as instant as injection but takes less than 30secs... A small price to pay really

Yes carb leaves some fuel economy to be desired but I find it far from bad on tiny engines like these (y)

inline pumps need to be significantly stronger than in-tank ones - able to withstand a heck of a lot more heat as in tank pumps are cooled by the fuel they sit in (yet another reason to not run a car on/near empty all the time). Thats why they are so much more expensive.

Was (and still is) a cool upgrade, one of the first things i would do if i had a panda would be upgrade to fuel injection - not thats its necessary, just my preference.

"****Most fuel injection pumps are gravity fed so they need to be mounted lower than the lowest point in the fuel tank**** An alternative to this is to mount the pump in the fuel tank itself. Most pumps can be run completely immersed in fuel. In practice they do this anyway since inside the pump the fuel runs up and around the armature of the pump in order to keep it cool and stop it from wearing out or sticking"
I'm pretty sure your pump is air locking all the time, mount it under the floor.

As far as I know "skv germany" is a ghost company, chinese products packed probably in Poland I am afraid:mad: Quality is a lottery ticket here.....

too big{ 3 times?} fuel pressure I am affraid.

Go back to the carb for now, but do not give up your spi conversion if you want/like one, just go back to the drawing board with that(y) find adequate pump, put it under the car not in the engine bay. I did the same with my regata 2.0, a temporary placed{ 5 years ago when I swapped the engne from carbed 1.3 8v to mpi 2.0 16v} 3 bar pump is too high and gets locked{ vapourlock} when the weather is hot{ more than plus 20 Celsius} I use the car very seldom {and do not turn off the engine when its hot;) } so this temporary bodge still exists under my hood, but that is a bad place for inline fpump.:D

i dont think i am getting vapor lock though. i think theres something that has gone through the pump and damaged the small gears inside. i have back flushed the pump (well tried to) but nothing came out.

i ran it for a few miles without a fuel filter before the electric pump (i still had the original fuel filter on the lift side).

i guess there was some muck in the fuel injection loop somewhere that has damaged the pump inside.

talon has not been driven for a long time now, its a bit of a pain but with it being so cold and the fact i need to get all new gaskets im not going to bother converting back to carb.

i'm just going to wait till i can get a fuel pump really cheap or free.

i have been told i can use one of those solenoid pumps behind a large fuel filter canister.

yes i know they "pulse" but the fuel canister acts as a "buffer" and keeps the pressure constant. i have read a few things online where people have done it with fuel injected cars.

hey guys

i now have the fiat uno's original fuel pump on Talon (using Fallouts internal fuel pump swirl pot). the Uno was the car i got all of the fuel system from so now i have the complete uno engine running system fit to talon and i can say that he is running really well..
i thought that the exhaust did not smell rich before, but not it smells that clean i could breath it!
i wont know until i drive him for a while.. but at least it should stop the annoying fuel pump constantly requiring a "tap" to work.

I take it that with the likelyhood of permanent success just around the corner there won't be a for sale sign on Talon?
Dave

i am really glad i didnt have a fault with the injector or throttle body...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-PAND...ts_SM&fits=Plat_Gen:141A_&hash=item19efc17d28

£200 + for a replacement part!

i got the whole lot from my local scrap yard for £20!
Thats ECU, Wiring loom, All sensors, Throttle cable, Throttle body, AND manifold!

:eek::eek::eek:

i also found out today that the Fiat Uno SPI uses the same fuel sender/pump as the later SPI 4x4 pandas that never made it to the uk.
