Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(
attachment.php

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
it looks like you enjoyed your beer! haha :D:D

yes, i am over the moon with it. it does seem a bit more powerful down low which is nice.

i just need to make a few bits for fallout now as that is who i stole most of the exhaust system from... oops

the throttle body though is a smaller diameter than the webber carb.. it does give more torque but on full throttle (like on motorways) you can feel the restriction.

on motorways it is foot pinned to the floor to do 70.

meh just means i wont brake the speed limit i guess. i dont really need the car to go over 70 anyway. it is a 4x4 at the end of the day..

if i didnt have talon, i would have some old landrover, old suzuki 4x4 or old daihatsu 4x4. all as old as talon if not older.

dream 4x4 would be the mid to late 80's mill spec landrover 110 long wheel base with canvas back and matching trailer.. bush tucker man style.. if you remember that tv program.

a man can dream..

on motorways it is foot pinned to the floor to do 70.
panda 4x4 1.0ie according to catalogues has 44hp not 50 hp like carbed one , with max speed of 78 mph. torque is 3Nm less in spi 1.0 than in carbed one.

no such thing as a wider throttle body or any other upgrades i can think of besides an engine swap. that is something i am not willing to do at this given time.
Can a larger throttle body from a Cinq/Sei 1108 not be used? Over there they're always doing that to get more power, I believe theres a 40mm available?

cento folk either use a P60 one (32mm rather than 30mm) or a P75 one can be machined a bit to use the spi injector top half of the TB (38mm). There is some peugeot TB i think it is a few people have used with some small modification that is 36mm.
The 40mm TB's are oem TB that have been sleeved and machined.. sparky5 makes them, perhaps he could do the same thing to whatever TB you John is using...

theres a guy that makes 40mm throttle bodies. i have asked him how much as i was interested for Fallout. sadly the manifold for the 1.2 fire does not fit the 999cc fire. its a shame but that is the way it goes i guess.

i can make do with talon how he is for now.. till i can afford a nice low miles punto 75 engine anyway :D

I used to have a 86 Range Rover with a 90s Vauxhall Monterey 3.1td engine not not fast but very torquey loads of room In the back, and huge suspension lift for driving over stuff, was really great fun, and talon reminds me of it only a little version, has all the same 80s quirks

Get your passport and a wedge of cash a treat talon to a diesel conversion, now a diesel 4x4 panda would be cool

yeah i know and if i could i would!

i just love the multijet mk2 diesel engine

fiat were like.. lets take all the goodness of the fire engine.. and make it into a diesel!
it just works so well. the 1.3l mj mk2 has the same power as 2L diesels of just a few years back.

ok its all direct injection with common rails and more sensors than actual engine.. but at only using 100ml of fuel an hour on tick over is just insane!

well this is starting to get to me. im getting sick of the damn engine messing me about.

now it wont idle, the fuel pump keeps locking up and needs a hammering to free up all the time even, though it has a filter on it now.

its getting me down quite a bit. so much to the point i have been considering selling it. or taking all the good parts off it to put on fallout and just get that running as my main car.

i could get a nice stilo for a fraction of the cost of what talon is worth... sadly not much without a working engine.

guess i could go back to carb.. guhh. means more expense as i would have to buy a new manifold gasket again and sadly the way i am at the moment means i cant spend a penny on anything at the moment.

if i could get a replacement engine i would go for that but no one would give one of those up willingly as i cant afford one. i'd be after a 1.1, or a 1.2 not fussed if its MPI or SPI. i'd need the full ECU code box, key and wiring kit with it.

think i'll just focus on fallout for now. at least that engine runs no matter what. just a pain in the ass how i have got to make a new down pipe for it. theres no way i am taking it back off talon. it to a hell of a lot of getting to fit on talon with the sump guard and gear linkage in the way so that is staying on that.

man.. i need cash. wish i had a car running so i could sell it

Find an old Mercedes, bolted to the side of the pump will be a fuel pressure accumulator this stops pump serge and keeps the system pressurised after shut down for starting.

Also just a daft question, the diaphragm on the fuel pressure regulator is vacuum controlled, have you got it connected to the vacuum side Of the throttle body?
There should be a pipe coming off, if not the top adjustment can have a hole in it put the hose on that?
That may be why no
Matter how low you set it, it still won't go low enough because
Of the atmospheric pressure acting on it, instead of negative pressure,
Pretty sure I've got a Honda and Nissan standard one laying around somewhere . .

im not using the regulator any more. i dont need it.

yesterday i went out in talon and it was running great. then on the A52 it just stopped. gods damn fuel pump just packed up so i hit it with the tire iron and it started working again. sadly it keeps locking up now. keep in mind this is after i fit the fuel filter. so it cant be crap stuck in it.

anyway its been running fine since then.. well it was working fine till i had the issue with the fuel pump the 2nd time around.

today i really needed the car. naturally it was going to throw a big middle finger in my face.

but i again hit the fuel pump and it worked again however the idle was racing which instantly told me that i have an air leak after the throttle body.. but i dont have one..

so i put it down to the throttle body sensors not sensing so unplug them and plug them in.
i turned off, unplugged one the started the car to see if it changed, then turned off and plugged it back in and moved onto the next plug. i did this till i unplugged one and the idle went perfect. so turned off and plugged it back in and now it wont idle.

i cant figure it out.. from running perfect to now this.

i'd rather engine swap than get this running. if this is how it is going to be all the time i am not interested in keeping this setup. i dont want to go back to carb

i wish i could give fallout a test drive and see how that goes with the 1.2 and the 4x4 gearbox.

my problem is i want the ratios of a 2wd on a 4x4, and that cant be done. (well it can but its way over my head)

my fear is that the engine will be revving out.. and using loads of fuel all revving and not going anywhere.

i am really getting to the point where i think the panda is not the car for me. i need something that can run a 100 miles on a thimble of fuel that costs nothing to tax and insure. sigh

sadly i dont think i can do anything to make a panda more economic without making talon look like a boy racer car (stripping everything out of it and trying to make it more aerodynamic)

really wish i had my brothers car. 80 mpg pretty much every modern luxury you can have in a car and it "just works" when you really need it to.

i guess a panda is good as a 2nd car but it makes a unwise main car.

sigh.

Young man.

When you joined the forum it added a new positive dimension to your life at a time when for want of a better word it was ****.
Your efforts have been and are totally inspiring, showing what can be done and how to do it on a shoestring.
Better still you have attended meetings, supplied parts to many, offered advise by the bucketful and shown the results of your efforts on you tube.

I think I am saying this for all Fiatisti.
Don't give up and buy a eurobox.
A life without tinkering isn't
worth living.

Dave

I can see both sides, and please don't take what i'm about to say personally as your efforts have been astounding.

Your venting now, we all do it, have done it, and will do it again. You venting at the fact the cars not right, your tired of fixing it and you just want to be able to depend on it. God knows I have been there!

The fact that you have got this setup working is nothing short of amazing. I take my hat off to you... but, and there is a big massive but here. Fiat spent £1000000's in R&D, road tests, simulated conditions, and running there setups well outside the range of normal use. You cant just stick another TB on, wire up a fuel pump, cleverly design a sweal pot and hope to just get away with it.

Its not going to happen, with the best will in the world your going to have problems, probably many, and requre skill (that you have), time, and money to resolve.

So, you can put it back to how Fiat set it up, or continue to put money in to getting it right as it is.

As regards the every day aspect, we talked about this last night. I have no doubt that people on here can, and do use there panda's as a daily, but its all about what you do in your daily. I can end up driving 400 miles in a day at short notice and how the car behaves isn't even a consideration, it has to! so I don't take the panda.

The panda can do everything a modern car can, but not for as long as a modern car can do it. Id not like to sit at 70mph for 300 miles for instance.

If you need to reliably do 20k a year, and have little downtime, no repair bills go lease a new car.
I dont have the panda to use every day. I couldn't, but when I do its always an event
