Panda Mum's had a Panda

Introduction

Chopped in the MGF which was bound to fail it's MOT and was getting to be a PITA for my Dad to keep running for her.

Funny how British built motors can't stand our weather, while mine and my brother's Polish built Cinqs are still usually ok :p

She's already got dirt on it, and a lovely big bunch of keys to scratch the paint with

I had a go in it - observations of a Cinquecento Sporting owner.

New! Shiny! Mild steel exhaust looks like stainless (still only 432 miles on it).

Quite nippy, even loaded up with four people.

£30 tax PA

Black keys - when did Fiat switch back from blue ones?
Also no CODE light, though the keys do have the circles on the blade, and a 2 (indicating the newer system).

The doors open to seemingly crazy angles :p

Crumple zones, airbags, ABS, oooh how posh ;)

The speedo in the non-rev counter models is TINY, barely visible to the human eye *cough*

Mysterious hole in the boot carpet on the nearside, for a light?

Even though they use the same bulbs the Panda's interior light lets you see things. The Cinq one is like a mouse rubbing two sticks together.

Rust on the check strap bolts already :(
Fortunately that seems to be the only place so far. Waxoyl ready for the next bit of good weather anyway (and one for the Freelander)...

Larger engine bay should be easier to work in (for comparison - Cinq Sporting engine is an 1108 CC version of the same engine I think - the 1242 are just a longer stroke, and in this case probably MPI?

Makes me wonder if a 1.9 MJ would fit in a 1.3 MJ Panda, bit of Fabia VRS-style fun... :chin::devil:

CD Player doesn't play MP3s, I know it's a base model but it still seems a bit stingy. The Cinq did come with a tape deck, though :p

Questions for other owners:
I keep feeling the steering column turning around next to my left foot, is this an issue for anyone else or just how I'm driving?

Are the 8v engines still non-interference (like my Cinq), meaning if the belt goes the valves won't be bent?

And have the dealers put the screws in the right place on the tailgate, I've heard horror stories of some putting self-tapping screws in where they like

I'm more tempted to draw out of an ISA and get a 100HP now :bang:

Aging is a terrible thing!

Me cheat? I can't believe you would think that! I was young and free when I first got my Panda in 2005. I got married the next year and my Panda was the main family car until 2009 when we got the Honda for that role as it's that bit more difficult to fit everything in around two small people. Dez had a few holiday runs south of the border in his early years but he's been retired from that role now..

Hang on, you got married in 2005 and you've already retired your husband??? Did you marry him for the life insurance or his estate? Poor old Dezzie

Lol at you, Mr Beardy! It's Dez that gets the easier life, haha! The roof box doesn't need to be deployed now. It's been sitting folded up in the garage for ages now. The cross bars for it have been used a couple of times on the Honda borrowing ladders.

Yes, there is an excellent guide on the forum how to fit one. The wiring is there but you will probably need to change the tailgate catch for one with the built in switch. I got mine from ebay, originally from a 2009 MJ model. It is far easier to find a secondhand fiat 500 boot light than a panda one (they are the same)

I have the same problem, only rust on the car that I can see!!!

I am going to see if I can pick up some stainless bolts, they will probably be allen headed rather than Torx but I can live with that!!!

Sadly not, the Euro 5 69 bhp engines will go bang!!!:(

No they are in the wrong place, my plate has 4 screws, one near each corner which I gather is correct

That's quite the thread bump o.o

I had since put a boot light in to my 100HP, I got a used unit for a few quid off eBay - it was a passenger door light off an Alfa 166, same part.

Annoying news about the engine not being non-interference, though we take care of it and it's serviced as required and my mum isn't the sort to drive it hard.

I'll have to check up on the numberplate screws. I stripped the inside of the tailgate on mine to fix the open switch/button a while back and forgot to. Oops.

The exhaust still looks shiny. The outer skin on the back box on my 100HP is slightly flakey, but still not blowing. I've not changed it and the invoices the previous owner handed over didn't include anything for an exhaust, as far as I know it's still on the original after nearly 8 years and 70k.

I'm still on the original exhaust after 105,000 miles. I've also noticed that it hasn't been banging on the heat shield above for about a year now, I'm beginning to wonder if there's no more metal on top of the back box.

Earlier in the year I put her into a body shop as the bottom of the tailgate had started to corrode along the inside where the inner and outer skins meet. It cost me a couple of hundred quid to have fixed and it will almost certainly re-appear sooner or later. But what interested me was the bloke who owned the body shop said that it was actually really quite damp behind the trim panel and he believed it had been caused by the rear plate being fixed by drilling through the metal instead of using the pre-drilled plastic lined holes. He's since taped those over. He also said that, although he'd put them back in, that given the choice he'd remove the black rubber plugs that line the drain holes as he felt they kept moisture in rather than let it out.

Many parts that rot away or just generally pack up ad go home will last longer on a properly used car than one that sits unused.

Batteries

Cam belt

Brakes

Exhaust

etc.

My 57 plate has only 35K miles but exhaust back box is nearly new, though the front pipe is a very bad way. Battery and cam belt were replaced before I took delivery.
