500 Our New Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge

Introduction

Well, after a couple of weeks waiting since we ordered, here is our 500. Bought as a cheap runaround, it should serve the purpose perfectly. Nice to drive, fairly relaxing. Only driven it a couple of miles so far, its currently sat on the drive at home while we are at work.

Should get a good little run in it this evening. Hope its not really rubbish on the motorway, having come from having 200bhp+ daily drivers.

Really glad we chose Breakbeat Grey (Silver) as its less common and easy to keep clean. (Im a detaling freak though). I will post more pics once ive gotten the car up to my standards, with a couple of layers of SN wax for winter protection.

Not really getting on with the 500. Wife likes it, but i think we need something with more space as we only have 1 car.

Does anyone think there is much of a call for someone that would be looking for a 500 saving a couple of £k from list price?

The car has only covered 400 miles so far.

On the assumption that you won't be offering low rate finance, you may find it quite tricky to shift without quite a big drop.

You also went for one of the least popular colours, which won't help.

Sorry to hear you're not enjoying your 500.

I kind of agree with RobinPJ here, although I do feel a little more positive about the colour as it does look nice.

I think it might be worth having a chat to your dealer and see what they say; there is always a chance (albeit perhaps a small one) that the dealer has a potential buyer on their radar looking for that colour (and they wouldn't have to wait up to 3 months for it to be built).

Going back to the space issue - I'm not sure what sort of stuff you are looking to lug around in your 500, but I would nevertheless recommend having a good nose around again and seeing where you can fit bits in.

Fully appreciate you've probably done this already, but the only reason I say that is because if you decide to get rid of the 500 then you are going to have to take a fairly significant 4-figure hit. If it's too much of an issue then you have no choice but to get rid, but it's just worth considering IMO as it is a lot of money.

Either way I wish you luck and hope you can get something sorted out.

I'm presuming you didn't buy it new then? And unless you picked it up private you're atleast going to lose what the dealer put on for VAT.

Why?

I agree he may well lose money (it was a pre-reg I recall) but if a new car costs £12,000 (inc VAT) for example then if you sell it you are not required by law to only sell it for £10,000, and a buyer may be happy to pay, say, £11,000 because the alternative is to pay £12,000 from a dealer.

I have seen this VAT argument raised before and it is a red herring. Prices go down because people think old stuff is worth less, not because of VAT.

Private prices are always less than trade prices, and it's especially hard to get a good figure for a nearly new car with various car supermarkets knocking them out dirt cheap.

I paid £8.3k for my 9 month old 1.3 multijet sport.

Private prices are lower because dealers give warranties and finance and even without them there is a feeling (maybe wrong) of easier come back than with a private seller where it is "caveat emptor" all the way.

It's nothing to do with VAT!

Prior to our 500 purchase, I had never bought from a car supermarket. In fact, I had an irrational fear of them! But we saw our own 6 month old 1.2 POP advertised at a local car supermarket for 7499 with only 821 miles on the clock along with a whole job lot of almost identical 500's that previously belonged to a hire car company. Whilst I was at the dealership, a couple of car transporters arrived full of them. They subsequently flew out of the dealership like faeces off a shovel. No regrets and as far as I'm aware, we saved a lot of pennies on Fiat dealership prices. Obviously, remainder of full warranty, AA membership etc included.

Likewise, the day before we'd been to a Fiat and a Ford dealer and priced up a 500 and a Ka, and were drifting towards a Ka due to the price difference.

LOL. I love forums and the way everyone assumes they know everything. Lets just say, i could sell the car for what WeBuyAnyCar.com have offered me, and still not lose any money on it.

My car was brand new delivery mileage, but pre-reg. I didnt buy from a Fiat dealership, and never would.

I'm a bit confused as to why you wanted any advice on here then? If you can flog your car to WBAC and still make a profit then happy days!:D

I don't think people were deliberating trying to come across as know-it-alls, it's just that in most cases people are unlikely to come off all that well when trying to ditch a car four weeks later.

Anyway, like I said, hope you get it resolved and get the right car for you.

No i didnt complain. I was just laughing. Been using Forums\BBs since 1996, and they never change. :)

Anyway, we have now been offered enough so that we have some collateral in the car. £400 more than WBAC offered.

However, i dont really need a more practical car any more (we love the 500 character, i just want to fit a roof rack) as an Abarth has come in at work which i am trading the car in against. It will be everything i love about this car, but with some decent steam to get it moving.

I couldnt transport my MTB anywhere once we got the 500, and i assumed there would be roof racks available. Thankfully, with no glass roof on the Abarth we are looking at, i can fit normal bars and cycle carriers.

I have carried my MTB inside the car. Just taking the front wheel off and pushing the passenger seat forward a bit gives it the room.
I have seen a picture of a guy's A500 with a bike roof rack on the back hatch and even 'with the spoiler in the way' it worked fine for him. From past experience I'm anti roof racks unless they are 'built in' and would prefer to 'hang' the bikes off the back of the car. If you interested I could 'dig out' the picture in question.

Thanks for the offer. Not a fan of tailgate carriers really. I prefer not to take a mucky bike in the car, and thats usually where the dog crate needs to be as well. I used a roof rack and thule pro ride 591 cycle carriers on the Clio 200 and they were fantastic. 5 minutes to fit and super secure.
