Multipla The Toad.

Introduction

So after owning all sorts of stuff from Buicks to Polos I've finally lost the plot and purchased a "bug eye" Multipla. It's a 110 JTD ELX with only 35k miles but it's a bit (err very) rough around the edges. The colour is horrid, actually I've always hated all Multiplas so it was an interesting choice. Anyway I presume you're not after my life story.

For me this is a second car so it's not about performance (obviously), it's about comfort and practicality. We'll see how long that lasts. I am very tempted to slam it, which wouldn't be comfy or practical at all. But it would look sooo right. I think it will eventually end up on airbags, I dont think I could ever go back to creeping over speedbumps after the amount of fun I've had this week.

Anyway, I've not done much to it yet and I've not got much money so it's a work in progress.

Here is a chop I did of the for sale pic to whet your appetite:

So sadly the missus has peed on the bonfire and insists she would rather go for black and not grey. So we've not even started yet and the plans are already out of the window!

Day 1:

Love this car already. Double electric sunroof, really comfy, good on fuel, should have done this ages ago.

Added some stickers and copious amounts of airfresheners (some kid has puked in the back), also added some handcuffs hanging from the rear bumper and hammered the hell out of some of the dents.

Aww yeah, stickers. Now I'm cool.

Day 2:

Which after a bit of cheeky 5-up speedbump action at high speeds lasted around 3 days... :D

Must say I like it much more now that it's broken, much more character.

Then after about 5 days some more parts started showing up

Bosch flatblade wipers (yaaay I can seeeee)

K&N filter (again only because the old one was cack)

Floor mats (already sporting a chunk of poo)

O HAI

Think that's it for now, more to come.
Boring general maintenance

New discs, pads, front ARB droplinks and lower control arms sorted!

Getting a mate to fit it because I have no garage here and I dont fancy doing it while lying in the street! I'm going to change the oil and get all new filters for it this weekend so I'll be good to go for a while.

Also I spotted a boost leak next to the intercooler which just involved adjusting a jubilee clip. That might affect performance a bit, I'll have to keep an eye on that pipe.

I can't wait to get my garage, we've been sorting the mortgage for ages and it's really starting to drag. Just when we think we're a the end of the chain something hits the fan. :bang:

Anyway enough of this drivel :D

I'll try and get some pics this weekend.

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

You may have to fit small spacers on the rear wheels to clear the inner body, i was running early coupe wheels on mine and it went round corners much better.
You can bend a section on the inner arch out of the way too so its not a biggie.

Thanks for this post, I didn't think I'd have any clearance issues because the arches are so huge but I didn't think of the offset tbh. If they do foul on anything I'll just bash it with a a large hammer until they fit! I'd love to get some huge spacers, I've been bidding on some but the proper hubcentric jobbies go for silly money so they'll have to wait.

What I am having trouble with right now are the wheel bolts.

The coupe wheels are much thicker and require longer bolts so I'm waiting for some in the post from a mate of mine (he's probably on this site come to think of it). Hopefully the new bolts which are on the way will be long enough to fit the wheels securely and also short enough to not damage the brakes.

Anyway, I took a few snaps this weekend while i was attempting to refurb the wheels. To be quite frank they look absolutely poo, I didn't attempt to fill any imperfections, I just took most of the old paint off and then sprayed them. Kind of a "that'll do" refurb to get them on the car. Much worse in person than in the pics!

I started with nitromors

then i sanded them for an entire afternoon (fml)

the next day I rigged up some newspaper and masking tape. My missus called this a maskterpiece - so I slapped her.

horrible "ford aztec bronze"

DSC_06231.jpg

I was well disappointed when i discovered that "aztec bronze" actually means coppery-goldey-orange-and-not-at-all-bronze.

So I hopped in the car and went down to hellfrauds and picked up some errrr I forget what this one was, it had bronze in the name too but was more brown than orange. I sprayed over the existing aztec bronze and it came out quite an interesting dark metallic reddish mahoganyish bronzey copper. Because I didnt buy much of it it is still mostly that shocking aztec bronze, giving an almost pearlescent effect - mmmm disgusting!

DSC_0628.jpg

I still dont like it but it'll do for now! I was hoping for a proper browney bronze :(

I think the fact that it is a disgusting colour kind of suits the car. I reckon they'll look great once they're filthy and a bit more curbed. :D well maybe not great but at least better than they will when they're clean and on a turquoise car!

haha missed this, yeah its my travel floss which lives in my overnight bag and never gets used! I bought it in the US where Safeway is still going strong!

I assure you my dental hygiene is impeccable :D

It looks okay, there are loads of turquoise bits in the engine bay and between the doors but those can be done next weekend. It's not a great finish but that was always the intention. Hopefully I'll get the wheels bolted on soon and I'll post more detailed pics of the paint job.

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

This is so cool :) are the ideas of the shark mouth and that gunna be done?

I'm still not sure really, I wanted to put rivets along the edge of every panel too but that is going to be an arseache! I fancy making some stencils and spraying some white numbers here and there too but we'll see how long it takes me to get bored with it.

I need to sort the finishing touches to the paint job and get the wheels on then I'll be on to the headlights, the list goes on and on so it'll be a while before I'm bored hopefully!

got this today:

brokenheadlight2.jpg

to replace the cracked one on the passenger side but I'll be taking them apart first and painting the insides black.

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

So i spent the weekend tidying up the ghetto paint job, getting to all the bits that I missed inside the doors, boot and engine bay. There is quite a lot of body coloured paneling inside each door so that was fun. I might get some better shots of some of it at some point but here's a crappy back door pic to illustrate what I mean:

DSC_0670.jpg

All of the door jams are now either green or black and each door is black inside.

While I was painting the car last week I had rolled one of the wheels into place to see what I thought and wasn't too impressed:

DSC_0646.jpg

The blue interior is much more prominent than I was hoping so last week I picked up some cans of rear light lense tinting spray and darkened them up a bit:

DSC_0671.jpg

Actually that was before I had finished so doesn't really do them justice. They're only slightly better than they look in that pic.

So next I got a bit carried away with some stickers I had lying around - I didn't like the ones I'd put on the back window so I thought i'd put more on:

DSC_0672.jpg

hmmm not sure about that - we'll see if that stays or not...

next I drilled the airbox like the big pikey I am:

DSC_0677.jpg

I'm quite enjoying playing with this car :) I love how if I mess something up it's not the end of the world, there's no pressure.

I shall be putting a stereo in this evening, so I'd better go. Have an arty shot as a parting gesture
