Punto (Mk1) Mk1 Punto Cabriolet Bertone 1.2 16v.

Introduction

Starting a new thread cause i got my last one deleted for using photobucket

Ok, so my misses has been driving for 6 months now and wanted something different and with a bit more poke then her 59hp 1.0 16v Micra Active. Shes been searching and searching for weeks for one of these and there bloody hard to find now so we ended up getting this, the only black one we could find.

Its a 1998 Fiat Punto Bertone 1.2 16v Cabriolet. Body and paint is in good nick and 4 brand new Yokohoma tyres, but needs work else where. Already replaced the side indicators for smoked ones and changed the thermostat and ripped the old airbox out ready for a k&N induction and debadged the boot. Plans include Change of wheels maybe 15" or 16" max, lowered, maybe an extension to the rear bumper and maybe an abarth bodykit and small bootlid spoiler, needs new mohair electric hood cause the rear windows got a massive split, replacement mirror, new radiator, oil & Filter change, fuel filter, replace sparkplugs and leads, White LED numberplate lights, smoked angel eyes with HID bulb conversion, half smoked rear lights, tinted sunstrip, new passenger lock, car mats, maybe GT turbo front brake setup, paint rear drums black, replacement glovebox lid, battery clamp. We already got some leather material to trim the seats. In the process of stripping out the interior and drying it out as its got damp from the split rear window before its recovered.

I think it makes a nice girly car for the summer and should look pretty mint when its done

its a nippy little thing and pushing a standard 86hp and down only by 4hp on the 1.6 8v version it replaced, also makes it drop down to a insurance group 8 and cheap tax bracket

would make for a great 1.4 GT Turbo conversion

Interior looks far better now a great improvement and improves the overall look of the car.

What other plans have you got for it?

What other plans have you got for it?
New headgasket and cam seals, red goodridge braided brake hoses, replace passenger door lock, paint door locks nero black, smooth the tailgate badge holes, front and rear bumper lip spoilers, Clifford alarm with remote locking

project should be finished then.

also forgot i put new brakes on, didnt opt for GT calipers in the end cause i couldn't find any cheap enough, so opted for uprated discs and pads on the standard calipers, thought GT brakes might be overkill on a 1.25.
Went with some OMP drilled and grooved discs with some Ferodo pads, as the original discs and pads were poor.

replace passenger door lock, paint door locks nero black
Why not delock the doors, fit remote locking if it doesn't have it. I've always hated the locks on the mk1 puntos, look like a total after thought, and a hideous one at that.

yes there not very theft proof and look like they've been made from recycled coke cans, was also thinking about de-locking the doors, well at least the passenger one as its damaged from what looks like an attempted theft at some point. The remote locking i will integrate with the clifford alarm so that wont be an issue.

edit: update pics above

Re: Mk1 Punto Cabriolet Bertone 1.2 16v

small update

Changed the standard cabriolet steering wheel, with a black leather Punto GT2 one complete with airbag, straight swap, just had to rewire the horn wiring and job done.
Also changed the brake hoses to red goodridge ones.

Had the new black PVC hood fitted today and looks much better then a stapled in sheet of plastic for a rear window. Needs to be left with the hood up for 2 weeks for the it to stretch and settle before opening it. Shame its not abit darker as it looks grey against the gloss black paint, but the only way around that would be to get a cloth hood which costs more but stains easier and is harder to clean, so this will have to do.

OK, this project is now near completion and my wallet will have a sigh of relief

just had new cat back exhaust, cylinder head gasket and bolt set, new timing belt and tensioner, helicoiles and bolts, brake hose clips and full system re-bleeding and camshaft blanking plugs.

Also passed MOT with 2 advisory's,:
1. surface corrosion on inner wings (seems to be about all the rust its got)
2. under side heavily under-sealed (not sure why that's a problem to be honest unless his hinting that's its hiding something horrible)

Only just passed on emissions and giving that its had a new exhaust system and lamba sensor its all pointing to the cat which is the only old bit left so iam gonna be replacing that next.

Just need to get it insured and taxed, full tank of V-Power, then take it down to have a Clifford Arrow 5.1 alarm fitted with the central locking on remote as theres bugger all protection on it right now. replace the passenger lock from what looks like an attempted break in at some point and paint the locks up gloss black to blend in to the paint work a little better. Figure what to do about the holes in the tailgate where the badges once sat and add small front and rear bib spoilers so it sits level with the sideskirts, then that should be it.

congrats! you get some right funny advisories sometimes.. My mate got 'road legal race car' as an advisory once - not sure why either, its either road legal or not why would it matter that its a race car.. I mean nearly all rally cars are road legal so they can travel between stages lol

How you could look under your car and think 'Oooo this underseal might be hiding something' is just silly, looks almost brand new (i bet alot of it is).

Now Taxed mMOT and insured. Just been out for the first time to Tesco and Halfords in it.

Wasnt too bad...bit shaky and squeaky inside and iam in the process of tightening up the gear knob and o/s wing mirror as there moving too much. To be expected from a lowered 15 year old car really though. Just a case of making adjustments here and there and tightening up everything that wants to move lol. Seems to also be excess movement in the gear leaver so maybe the gearbox mounts need tightening or replacing. Being out in the rain is also a good test for water leaks as there seems to be water getting from the o/s front window where the windows not quite lining up right against the seal, looks like ill have to make some adjustments to the glass to get it to sit flush.

Wow, Your Cabrio looks amazing!

Ive just got a 1999 T-reg 1.2 in Silver with a blue hood and im thinking of doing the leather interior, How did you go about doing the rear seats, was it an easy job?

This is my second Cabrio, had a 1.6 1996 "P" one in the same silver but a black hood and the older interior, replaced the front seats with GT turbo ones but never could figure out how to remove the rear headrest part.

Did you cover over the original seats with Leather or did you strip them and then recover? Easy job? Cost? Time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gaz :)

Hi mate, the front leather sets where from a Fiat coupe 20v but just using the standard punto runners. The rear seats where covered in the leather that we stripped from the coupe rear seats as they didnt fit straight in, and we also used some foam from the coupe rear seats to shape the back seats in the punto. I too coudlnt get the rear headrests off so the misses covered them why they where still attached which wasnt easy.

So in total the fronts are easy the backs are not.

Did you have new rubbers fitted with the new hood? When we replaced our hood a few years ago we kept the old rubber (now 18 years old) and despite adjusting the windows never managed to stop a small amount of dripping from the nearside front corner. I finally solved the problem by smearing a very thin film of silicone grease where the door rubber meets the hood rubber. This stops the capillary action of the water entering the car. I was worried about the grease attracting dirt, but you need such a thin smear that this has not been a problem.

Glad you are enjoying your car. We have had ours for 12 years now and have no plans to change it. My daily driver is a Jaguar XK8, but I still enjoy having a blast driving my wife's Cabrio! Thankfully, my son has a sensible car!
