Stilo RGZ's thread (pic heavy)

Introduction

Just noticed recently I haven't created a thread for RGZ, so figured I may as well rectify that oversight right now.

So, bought her in March 2006 after my old 1.2 8v Punto went pop. Was one of those "offers" Fiat give to essentially keep you in finance for a while longer and maybe even extend how much you owe them

But anyway, was happy to get the Stilo. Liked the look of it and also the spec was amazing I thought. Electric everything, really decent standard stereo, comfortable and slightly faster than the Punto :)

These are the first pics after I collected her...

...got some minor things from Ripspeed (mats, lighter) and Richbrook (taxdisk holder and Poppy Coral), but kind of intended to keep her standard due to having not a lot of cash. However, after getting more involved in posting on here and other sites, I started doing other things. First things were debadging the rear and sides and adding some Richbrook spinner dust caps (the one's with the grub screw just don't work) and a shortened Richbrook aerial...

...I then got some new plates before going to the Italian Show in St Andrews that year...

...I then set about losing the badged grille and replacing it with a mesh one from eBay for £40. Sprayed the backing first of course...

...finished...

...I then decided to paint the brake callipers...

...I also sourced some Fiat alloy pedals to lift the interior. Same pedals that are on the Schui and many new Bravos (excuse the shabby Ripspeed mat)...

...but then the major bit, ordering the suspension parts. Took a while to source, so in the meantime, I painted engine bits...

...but then the suspension arrived. A mate and myself tried to fit it ourselves, but it went a little bit wrong. Rusty bolts are evil and angle grinding is never the solution...

...but eventually, it was sorted out by a garage and RGZ's looking and handling great (also added some fitted sunblinds btw)...

...after that, the strutbrace was added after a few hours and drill bits...

...and so, future plans are really in my sig. Hopefully next will be a custom exhaust of some description, induction, new alloys and perhaps some bodywork and interior stuff if money allows. Shall keep this thread updated with any developments of course.

Any comments welcome :)
Cheers, yeah it is pretty subtle. Had toyed with the idea of getting a single bore but everyone that's seen it on says it looks great. The workmanship on the whole system is top notch as well. Saw the underside of the car yesterday when I was getting other work done and it looks great :)

Told the guy I didn't want the generic raspberry rasp that many systems have and what I've got now is brilliant. It's louder, of course, but more purposeful sounding if you know what I mean. It almost burbles at idle :D

Saying that though, it's perfect at motorway speeds. Doesn't drone or anything, which is great for long distances. But the other thing is I can definitely feel the performance advantage. It's not massive as it's still a 1.2, but it feels more flexible than it did before.

All in all, I'm rather happy. Plus it's got a lifetime guarantee...not something you usually get from Kwik Fit :D

Thanks mate (y)

Don't think anything major will be done for the next few months till my bank balance recovers. Did cambelt, tyres and a few other things recently so that cost a good bit. Still, got some flat wipers that've been recommended off eBay and personalised decals from Pistonheads.com, so some small things are getting added.

Still fancy upgrading the alloys as well, though seems to be all 16" Fiat one's that are appearing on eBay recently. Barely any Blades or Claws appearing on there. Not that I can afford to get them at the moment

Aye good work.... but personally I think your speccy mate should have fulled blinded himself! How exactly he thought he could steer an angle grinder whilst sitting on his arse, arms at full stretch, eye's scrunched up because he was getting spattered with sparks. Douchebag.... I'm just glad he didn't rip through a brake pipe and spray your car with fluid.

How much did your exhaust cost? I need a new back box but i'm more than capable of fitting it myself.

Is it that obvious my mate's not a professional mechanic  I have to say that we didn't really think that whole part through. We figured if we managed to get the head of the bolt off, we could drill it through and in turn fit the new strut, etc. Didn't work out like that though as we didn't have the right tools for the job. The brake lines and anything else were tied back out of the way, though as you say, was a bit precarious. After we'd completely exhausted ourselves trying to get the evil bolt out, we swallowed our pride and got a garage to do it. Which was actually how I found the brilliant CM Garage Services (http://www.langlandsgarage.co.uk/) who now do all the work on my car...silver lining :)

All sorted now though, so that's the main thing. Despite our amateur bodging attempts

The exhaust was £300 and built by the same people that did the system for the Renault Avantime that appeared on Top Gear a series or so ago. Simon's Exhausts (http://www.simonscustomexhausts.co.uk/index.html) is the place, based in East Kilbride and said exhaust is still putting a smile on my face :D

Anyway, here's a recent pic I took. Would pop more on, but run out of room in the gallery...may have to donate soon :p

Induction kit's finally on - well it's been on a few weeks now. Wanted to mildly clean the rocker cover before I popped a pic up in the thread (can see how dirty it was if you check out my gallery :p)

...brakes or alloys shall be next me thinks :D

That induction looks very very nice. How much did it cost if you dont mind me asking and where did you get it? Is it at the same standards as a gsr?

Cheers

Built it myself :D

Was trial and error and think it still needs some mild tweaking - a heat shield below the cone to protect it from the rad pipes for example. But, there's been no dip in performance and it feels like it picks up a bit better on acceleration. Sounds great too of course ;)

All in cost was about £90, but that's due to me needing a new t-piece for the breather as I had "issues" with making the original one fit  so could probably do it for £70-80. The cone was the most expensive part due to it being metal gauze and a twin cone. This is it... http://www.regals-motorsport.co.uk/...n-cone-stainless-steel-air-filter-p-1540.html

I also went to http://www.auto-performance.co.uk/ for the pipes. Got the t-piece, 45 degree alloy pipe and 90 degree silicone pipe (the latter 2 I had to trim down) all were bought in stages as I had to redesign it about 3 or 4 times when I hit some snags  :p I also used the handy reducer and many hose clips included with the cone :)

Due to the sizes and diameters of the pipes available, I ended up using some tapered O-ring type washers to make sure there was a tight seal round the throttle body and the alloy t-piece. It was literally a mm or 2 difference in circumference but I wasn't happy with the snugness of the fit without them and I've not had an issue in the few weeks and couple of hundred miles I've driven :)

I will say this though, the DIY approach was ridiculously involved for me mainly because it was such trial and error. The kit I made up can be improved on, especially in terms of how it fits together BUT it performs well, was far cheaper than what I was going to go for and is a heck of a lot better than something from K&N, Powerflow or Pipercross where the cone basically sits on top of the manifold/rocker cover.

Here's a pic of the kit before it was fitted to the car. Had to slightly trim the silicone pipe of course to fit...
