Zastava Yugo T-Jet sleeper project

Introduction

After becoming disillusioned with my Uno T-Jet sleeper project because I can't find a non-rusty interesting mk1 car, I have tangented badly into this project. Basically the same idea as before which is to make a daily driver sleeper with a T-Jet engine.

I bought this from eBay:

Someone else has had a go at it and put an Uno Turbo engine in it on the original gearbox. Otherwise it is basically standard. Got some cool driving lights in the grill (period non-factory accessory). Has done 16k and seems in pretty good condition.

For those that don't know, Yugo's are based on FIAT 128s and therefore Ritmo/Stradas and some bits that I have from the Uno project and other things will fit. A bit. Lots won't.

It has independent suspension all round. Sort of. Struts with a control arm and an anti-roll bar at the front and a single transverse leaf with swinging "wishbones" at the rear with struts for damping only.

Yugos were a very popular car, but now there are only 37 taxed in the UK.
Not messing about with things this time. Going to remove all things I can from the car and scrape and bash until I am convinced there is no holes or irreparable bits before I start dreaming of turbo-charged Yugoslavian mass-production fun.

Started with a good scrub down of driver side wheel arch. No dramas in here. Looking good!

Yes. I resisted the first time around and slightly regretted not bidding the £500 I had thought I would, but then it turned up again after a no-show winner. Drove to Nottingham to see it and spent a good while underneath it. I negotiated to pay £380 for it. Seller said he had so many hundreds of watchers and many more views, but little actual bidding!

Oh man, this is so cool!! Nice one Lewey!! Bargain price for a car with that many miles on it. Looks like a survivor as well!! What engine was the Yugo's originally fitted with? Is it a similar block to the Uno turbo one?

Also you've got a colour scheme going for your sleeper projects as well, like a discrete racing colour scheme

Can't wait to see this in the metal!!

Haha, cheers Si. They had 45/55/65 versions with 903cc pushrod, 1116cc and 1301cc SOHCs respectively. Therefore a UT engine goes straight on as illustrated in the car right now. As I want to fit a later gearbox, it's all going to have to come out and I will have to fabricate mounts this time I think.

Ah right cool stuff. 6 speed gearbox?

Just spotted that the radiator is the original 903 type...is that enough??? I've got a full length mk2 panda one on mine now and that is just about doing it but I would not want any less; she gets very hot in traffic. Uno turbo engine has got to be generating some reasonable heat though

So cool though, looks like it was mean't to be in there.

Just to set the record straight, I am permanently removing the gearbox and engine that someone else put in there and putting in a T-Jet engine. I gave up on old engines a while ago I'm afraid. The rad will be replaced. The T-Jets are amazing at dealing with heat though, so I won't need anything extreme. A Panda one might be pushing it though. As a result of the FIRE engine, I have to use another gearbox. Will be a 5 speed, probably a C510 type as I used in the Uno.

have you thought about a cinq/sei/punto box there more common (y) maybe the punto 6 speed? (y)

Yes. I have about 10 gearboxes in my garage. 5 and 6 speed C514 types like you describe and many C510 type. The problem with the C514 type is ratio availability. The 6 speed is only available with one set of ratios in all the cars it is put in. This is too low for an everyday car with the size of wheels I have, but pretty good for track use if you have a narrow power band.

Thing is, this car will have a very wide power band (1500 - 6000 RPM) and not be used on track, so I actually want really tall gears, especially 1st. Therefore using a gearbox from a turbo diesel is the only way to go with the smaller tyre diameter I run in comparison to modern cars. The C514 type is not used in most diesels as it can't take the torque, so the C510 is used instead. The C510 is used in a standard UT in case you didn't know.

C510s are still used in loads of FIATs and Alfas so I am not worried about parts. They are actually quite common. I bought one from a Grande Punto diesel that had done 1500 miles for £150 from eBay, put a different bellhousing on it and now use it in my Uno racing car on standard mounts.

The only C514 type box I would consider is a C514R from a 1248 diesel 500/Panda. It is rated for slightly more torque than normal and has the highest gears you can get, but 1st and 2nd are still very low as FIAT are cheapskates and use the same mainshaft/layshaft in most the C514 boxes which has these gears as part of the shaft.

also uno turbo brakes fit under cinq sporting wheels which are 13s... might make it more of a sleeper either that or the cinq steelies

I will keep 13s. Not sure about steels or an early 80's period alloy. I think Cinq sporting wheels are too new.

Some subtle Alfa/Lancia pepper pots painted in Black or silver, decent profile on then so they look stock. Nice spongy suspension to so it squats like a b*tch when the happy pedal gets pressed :p

Well, good news is that I can't find any serious rust. I will need to wire brush and repaint arches and parts of underneath. I am fairly confident it won't have any surprises for me.

So with that in mind, I took the engine and gearbox out. Had to do them separately and it was a bit of a fiddle to get the engine out of the top with the bonnet on.

I am trying to fit a C510 style gearbox. It's going well since the shafts go straight in the box as I had predicted, but more importantly the length into the box is correct as I had guessed it might be. FIAT really don't like changing key dimensions like this.

The issue now is that the gearbox needs to be 25mm towards the N/S wing for the shafts to be perfectly central and for me to have a decent chance of using the gearbox mount on the centre engine bay brace (pictured resting on the ARB and steering rack). I was just using the mount that came on this box, but it is pretty close.

I am looking at modifying the Yugo mount to fit on the new gearbox. The 5th gear end plate that allows the mount to work on the Yugo box looks suspiciously like one from a C510 box. The bolt holes are the same and it is roughly the same shape.

I know that 1.7 Diesel Fiorinos used the C510 gearbox in the later models and they theoretically have a similar front end as they are based on a 127 which the Yugo is based on. I can't find any pictures of the Fiorino mounts in situ and ePer doesn't help enough to really describe how the gearbox mounts work in these vehicles.

I am going to appeal for pics in the Fiorino section. I have been hoping to spot one on the streets and take pics of the suspension setup as well as the mounts, but they are rarer than I remember! The later Fiorinos used a reaction rod system with an attached ARB like Ritmos, which seems like a much better idea. Probably wouldn't be too hard to find a whole front suspension setup from a scrapper and possibly some mounts too!

C510 gearbox... Is that the 5 speed as found in abarth cars rather than the 6speed? Sorry on phone and can't be bothered to try find out myself
Yes, as it happens. Also used in Grande Punto T-Jet. Also used with other engines in most FIAT models in the last 20 years and some Alfas. The gearbox pictured is from a Doblo 1.2 FIRE. Hard to find and unique in this country because it has the FIRE bellhousing and still has a speedo output and a diff that accepts shafts directly. I'll be using a gear selection from another gearbox inside this case as currently the gearing is so low that my top speed would be 90MPH in 5th@ 6000 RPM
