Astra H 1.6 VVT SXI

Introduction

Hello everybody,
Some of you may already know me, I recently upgraded cars from a 1.2 Fiat Grande Punto to this 1.6 SXI with XP kit and penta alloys. Higher miles than the GP but I won't be driving it long as off to uni in September!
I bought it cheap as it is scrapped down the side and the alloys are in poor condition, but have already refurbed one of the alloys, replaced the damaged front wing and the rest of the cosmetic damage (scuff on front bumper, scrape down door, scuffs on rear quarter panel) is getting repaired next week.

I plan on doing a few subtle things to improve the car aesthetically (from my point of view) so peoples opinions are welcome :)

Already removed the 'astra' off the boot trim:

A man bought and took away the Punto today but here is a picture of the two together:

The other day I also put black vinyl behind the griffin badge, and also a bit of red detailing

As the calipers are very obvious with the penta alloys, I decided to paint the calipers red!

haha :D thanks mate! Just had a look through your thread, very nice. Love the blue smd conversion (that was next on my list ;) ) Can I ask what SMD's/LEDs you used for dials/steering wheel controls and everything? Thanks!

3528 SMD buddy, the steering ones are smaller but the 3528 can still be soldered to it and works fine same brightness :)

LCD screen and heater controls are different 4 prong ones mate very tricky!

Thanks! Cheers for the advice mate, I'll probably stay clear of the LCD and heater controls until I've got the hang of it a bit more then :p

Thanks!

Refurbished another alloy today.

Started like this:

Still not perfect but a huge improvement! 2 down, 2 to go.

The car had two new rear tyres on the back a couple of weeks ago, and after finding a bulge on the drivers side front tyre  :bang: I thought I'd better replace it pronto! So two more new tyres on the way. Very annoyed though, as the front tyres had a good 5-6mm tread on but didn't trust that bulge..

Now I know it's there I can definitely tell when driving! As the car is going into the bodyshop tomorrow though I shan't be fitting them until Monday, but I'm sure it'll survive till then!

New tyres and service parts (oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs) arrived today so got all that done, minus the tyres.

The pollen filter was an absolute state, I can't imagine it had ever been changed. Upon removable about a million bits of debris fell out

Air filter wasn't too bad

But anyway she's running a bit fresher now!

What tyres did you get?

Do they match your new rear ones?

You may be able to offload the good front one to a part-worn place if you get them to fit the new tyres, unless you keep it for emergencies or say someone on the forum slides their car into a kerb....

Just Nexen N8000's but yeah they're the same as the rears and they've been decent. Only 'budjet' but they have great grip in the wet and are pretty quiet. £136 for the pair, I can't afford to be spending £150 a piece on continentals haha, they'll last me till September!
I was thinking of just keeping it, round where I live punctures are quite a common thing so thought might as well keep it for the sake of £30 or so if I were to sell it part-worn

As my old plates were tatty and worn I decided to get some new ones:

As well as fitting my new plates, this afternoon I've also been doing an SMD conversion on my speedo dials! I've seen it done before so for £7.99 off ebay I decided to give it a go. THE PICTURES DON'T DO JUSTICE, THEY LOOK SO MUCH GREENER/BETTER IN PERSON

Everything went okay but after connecting it back up again none of the fuel gauge lights are working. Every single other light is working but the 3 used to illuminate the fuel gauge aren't. There's no way I could of soldered them all on the wrong way round, is there? They weren't the first ones I did so I couldn't of done them wrong from not knowing what to do. Anybody know what might be the problem? Just seems odd that 3 out of the 15 SMD's I changed don't work and they all happen to be on the same dial..
I'm going to take it apart again tomorrow and just check to see if I can see the culprit.

I also forgot to add, the damage down the side was fully repaired 1-2 weeks ago and is looking much better!

The car was in the body shop for 6 days, and theeeeeeeennnnnnnnn on Sunday on my way home, I was travelling down a long, straight, country road and some f****** p**** in his big 4x4 was driving in the middle of the road, at high speed, and when I realised he wasn't slowing down or moving over I had to swerve. This caused me to fly up the mud bank, throwing my car into the air. I was lucky to keep relative control of the car and not crash but I must say I shouted MANY rude words at him. By the time I'd got the car back on the road he'd gone out of sight, clearly oblivious to the fact he nearly made a 17 year old crash their lovely car. Anyway, nothing serious but as I went up the bank I done damage to the front of my car. The paint on the front bumper XP kit is stress cracked and will require repainting, and my fog light completely broke off its bracket. More money I didn't want to have to spend!!! But, these things happen :( :bang:

Managed to sort the fuel gauge lights. Took it all apart again and one of the SMD's wasn't touching one side so therefore the circuit wasn't being completed, hence none of them coming on. All sorted now though and love it!

Hello mate,

The Astra looks well. Are you missing the GP at all?

Regards
Stephen

Thanks Stephen, she's coming together! I'd love to say I am, but honestly I'm not. I enjoyed it when I had it as I loved doing all the little things to it, but, I'm now busy with the Astra so haven't got time to miss the GP

I am in the H club as well

I have a 5 door, dont like the look of the rear of the 3 door and the bootspace is poor for me, even worse than the 5 door

Speedo lights look good, id consider doing all the interior now in that colour if you can

Id go for the crusie control mod if you havent done it already next...if you havent got CC fitted

looks like someone is having the same luck as me lately . sorry to hear you had a road incident (....yeah lets call it that ) people driving 4x4's should have to take another test to do so they think they are king of the road.... until a little orange power machine comes roaring by and gives them some of their own medicine  then sits infront of them at stupidly slow speeds (also known as the speed limit) just to please them that little bit more :D
