My new weekend toy

Introduction

As some of you are probably aware I was going to sell my GP and buy a RenaultSport Clio 182 but was worried about fuel consumption, the lack of warrenty and how much depreciation my GP has suffered.

I then realised that I could afford a cheap second car as a bit of a weekend toy and keep the GP for the mileage munching and work use.

One of my best mates (Whiley) owns a Bianca White S1 Rallye and recently bought a Cherry Red S1 16v from a guy off the Rallye Register with the intent to swap the 16v into his shell. He then offered me the red shell with his 8v in it once he completed the engine swap.

So the 16v went into his and ran problem free although we ran into an issue with his 8v in the red shell (we forgot to unlock the ECU). I managed to pick up a cheap unlocked ECU from a RR member last week and on Friday night we got it fired up :)

So now I am the very proud owner of a Cherry Red S1 Rallye. The only mods to it at the moment are a Raceland filter, Raceland manifold, S2 steelies, VTR exhaust system (for some reason) and lowered suspension (unknown make and drop but it looks approx -40mm)

Just a couple of quick shots:

It needs a decent clean and a few bits and bobs but then it should be all good.

The plans for it after a good clean up are:
- Enclosed filter
- Pugsport exhaust (2" tip)
- Kat Cam

As always with modifying, this list will likely change/increase over time.

I will get better pictures up at the weekend after I've had a chance to give it a good going over.
Cheers Sammi, this way I can have a bit of weekend fun and still keep in the Fiat fold :)

Yeah I remember him posting it up on here a while back. iirc from his posts on the Rallye Register he's 16v'd it now.

See what you meant about a bit faded  cool cars though (y)

It's crying out for some R888's, nice brakes and a day abusing them both ;)

How's the raceland manifold heard mixed stuff on them...

It's not as pink in real life but could still do with a bit of PC

It's crying out for a set of Speedlines imo :yum:

As for the manifold, I couldn't really say because I've not put the car on the road yet but combined with a full system on Gaz's Rallye it sounded nuts. It tarnished very quickly but it seems to be well welded together.

Will report back after some mileage.

Cheers for the info Gary (y)

Ta WRP, I'm looking forward to a bit of fun at the weekends. If the GP ends up being rendered unused then it might go.

A machine polish will be carried out this weekend. I gave it a quick wash and dry this evening and then set to work on the arches with some Autoglym paint restorer and a bit of hand polishing - It's already showing signs of life under the dull paint :)

More pics to follow this weekend after a good session with the machine polisher and some elbow grease.

Ah brings back memories of my old one, love it.

I don't know the induction system, but apart from introducing more noise and maybe heat I've not seen any induction system that offer any considerable gains on Peugeot's, or in fact many cars TBH as the manufacturers spend hundreds of hours dyno testing them.

The series 1 air box is unique IIRC and is pretty big for a small capacity car.

The original Michelin steel wheels can't really be bettered for weight as very light and strong, going bigger only adds many kilos to unsprung weight and light weight low powered cars really feel that. Plus you have Series 2 wheels which are 1/2" wider than series 1. Although its always a personal choice, if its going to be tracked do not waste money on wheels when you have the best already.

I don't know if you can still get them but I had a full Peugeot Sport Group N decat exhaust system which sounded amazing, it was loud but very pleasant especially at 7K+ rpm! It only had a little tailpipe as well, so looked pretty innocuous.

Surprised its been dropped, looks same height as my standard one was.

Good luck with it, sure you will have some brilliant fun, always fancied another as it really was that good.

PS as an aside, Classic & Sportscar mag said about 2 years back to buy as many unmolested Series 1 106 Rallyes and find a barn and hide them in as they are future classics just weighting to go up in value once all the dodgy ones are scrapped or crashed!

PPS the only oher things I did to mine was fit a GTi rear spoiler colour coded as always thought rear end looked to like ordinary model, and fit a MOMO Corse (NLA) steering wheel as fitted to integrale EVO2's as standard. Plus fitted front fog lamps from a 106 XSi as rallye has same bumper but with plastic blanks after one of mine broken into two bits when a bird decided to hit it, and even bought a genuine fog lamp switch from dealers and wired it in so all factory looking.

Spot on info as always Aaron (y)

You're right about the induction, I've never been a fan of open filters, especially ones that sit next to the rad and the manifold but it didnt come with a standard air box and they seem to be hard to come by so unless I find one going cheap it will probably be an aftermarket enclosed replacement.

I know the S2 steelies are the pic of the bunch for traction and weight but they're a bit tatty and need new tyres all around so if I can get my hands on a set of used light weight alloys with good rubber at a decent price then I will, overwise it will be a refurb of the steelies and some new tyres (whichever is cheaper).

The Peugeot Sport Group N exhaust is still available, it's produced by Scorpion these days and retails at about £250 although used ones seem to pop up from time to time on the owners clubs. This is the one that I'm after, in the 2" outwardly rolled tip design (as mentioned in my planned mods).

As for the suspension, I haven't seen many standard S1's in person so it's hard to tell. There doesn't appear to be any paperwork for suspension mods but the previous owner mentioned a 40mm drop and iirc the front springs are red???

Unfortunately this one will never be worth top dollar, it's in need of some body repair and a respray to bring it back up to scratch and it's no longer on it's original engine (probably a good thing as the shell has covered nearly 150k and the engine has only covered 65k).

I cant wait to get it on the road, it's teasing me ever day
