Right few weeks ago me and a mate replaced the clutch on our polo. When it was back on the road, somethin was knockin/wobbling like something was lose..
I jacked the car up and checked the driveshaft to see if the bolts were lose and if it wernt in right...and they were fine, couldnt see what was lose. For 2 full weeks i been driving about with this noise going from bispham to st.annes (8 mile trip).
It seemed to shut up soon as i put foot down, the min i took foot off accelerator ya could hear it rattling.,or when i were coming to a stop you could hear it loud at that point.

So i decided to take it to 2 VW specialists and also VW themselves.
and also some1 off another local car site who has his own garage and is respectable..
When it was on the ramps, they all came back with same story..''Sounds like your Diff is fooked/bearings have gone in ya box''
So that were 4 ppl all saying same thing so i sorta believed them and set about trying to find a second hand box..say £100 and £100 to get it fitted..

BUT i still wernt happy, cus when i breaked,it shut up..In my head somethin was tellin me,somethin aint right with the wheel.(i thought off when breaking maybe) as the break pads grip the disc Hence the noise going away when i breaked...

Me,the g/f and her lil boy were going to Halifax to see an old friend y'day (Sat)so after we got back from some shopping fri evenin..I thought im gona take the Driverside wheel off and see again if anythins lose (as that is where the noise was coming from)..

AND to my shock horror all 4 bolts were lose and not in proper,i got them out with my fingers!
I tightened them all up,checked the otherside aswell but was ok,went round block and the noise had gone.My lil runabout is back to normal :)
All aloong i was right by thinking somethin aint right due to the noise going away when i breaked..The 4 bolts musnt have been thru the disc enough (properly secure) which why it was making that nocking wobbly noise..The discs wernt secure!...

I was soo glad (and the missus) that i decided to check the wheels fri evenin near dark before we set off on our 130 mile round trip the next day..
Things may have been alot more costly and we may have ended up stuck on the side of the M6 with 3 wheels..then possibly the cops getting a recovery wagon to take it away...

Cant believe all garages didnt even think about trying the wheels just to see if anything was lose..They all drove it to check the noise out aswell..

So glad we havnt bought a gearbox and had it fitted, that would have been £200 down the drain..

Thanks for reading lol

My Bravo HGT did this, it had thrown a bolt out and another was coming undone. could be felt as a vibration that steadied itself under aceleration.

It is human nature to assume things. I knew good a mechanic who stripped a hand brake and calipers apart because the warning light was on the dash. Turned out to be a low brake fluid level, being decent he did not charge but was a little red faced. :D
