My new MR2 Turbo

Right so time to start this from the top for my new tubby '2

picked it up off a owners club member last weekend, needs bits sorting before it's ready for mot

plate wont live on the centre panel btw its just there as one of the bolts on the plate holder rounded off and not got around to it yet, and when i had the car with no plate on the back my neighbour phoned the police (long running history with her) which resulted in a stern talking to about changing the identity of the vehicle supposedly

Anyway enough babbling, few issues atm

Issues before mot:
1) bulbs which need changing here and there
2) power steering (though this doesnt keep the light illuminated so it may be ok for a pass?)
3) new number plates needed (ordered)

General issues i want to sort:
1) Headlight kind of loose? -> but fine when parked at a standstill so should be ok with mot
2) new battery
3) investigate knocking from rear susp (only at slow speeds when gbox warmed up only moving forwards under load - even slight and also only when turning?)
4) boost pressure sensor... although tried my spare with no change
5) leading on from above get a working boost gauge either std or fit GReddy gauge

Parts i want to fit (no particular order)
1) Apexi induction from old tubby
2) 3" stainless downpipe from old tubby
3) Headunit from old tubby
4) Possibly swap the HKS exhaust for my nur spec from old tubby
5) GReddy gauges to A Pillar
6) XS Power IC
7) Blitz EBC
8) probably loads of random bits too like led bulbs instead of normal bulbs just about everywhere etc

Anyway pics as is atm most of you will have seen this but i want to have a decent thread history further down the line with it

Better quality pics to follow once i actually sort out my digital camera

i think you'll find the reflector inside is loose rather than the headlight itself, which is why the headlight feels solid but the light pattern bounces about.

3) investigate knocking from rear susp (only at slow speeds when gbox warmed up only moving forwards under load - even slight and also only when turning?)

usually a CV joint, not cheap on this car, but nothing major.

good luck with the project, tis great when you've got plenty to keep you busy, but its crap that you cant rest your mind until its all done. we've all been there, one step at a time and it'll be a minter before you know it.

Re: My new MR2 Turbo

i've been told the clonking could be a lsd as the rev1 lsd's are very clonky ditto aftermarket ones, but not sure how to test that

Headlight loose isnt the beam pattern bouncing its the headlight unit itself... (why there's no cover on it atm)

first circle is the bit where it has play, and the second is the washer i believe may be missing or something causing it to rattle about

Am actually quite excited at the prospect of a good project however a bit put off by the fact most of the bits need removing from another mr2 rather than from their box (well alot of them are in a box but still )

Re: My new MR2 Turbo

knocking at the rear i've been told is almost defo lsd as it is quiet as a mouse when being moved around cold, though best way to find out is either try turning one wheel and see what other does, or spin the wheels up a tiny bit and see if leaves one tyre mark or two

either way i'll worry about that after mot...
Plates are on their way, bulbs have been swapped though im still changing a few non-mot failure ones inside atm
Power steering i've got to sort today

and the most depressing point...

looks like its not on coilovers (viewing the car in the rain put me off checking) its actually on springs but by the feel of it the springs have had a coil cut off as well... which would explain the bouncyness

Re: My new MR2 Turbo

I think black is the better choice of colour. I saw one yesterday in a horrible silver/grey and it looked vile.

Great so you'd end up on criminal damages charges....

Anyway, cars looking cool, can't you take all the good bits of the broken one then shift that on via Ebay. Advertise it as with a slight knock or something

Re: My new MR2 Turbo

Hey Alex,

you probably know about it but Intapart up at Daventry not that far from you have 5 MR2 turbo listed breaking, late and early types, always worth remembering though I know you are breaking one yourself.

Re: My new MR2 Turbo

i know i know lol wont be quite so in your face poo when new plates turn up

Failed MOT with a nice fail sheet:
  • Front direction lamp showing too much white
  • Rear number plate lamp not working
  • Rear exhaust system has a major leak of exhaust gasses
  • Nearside front tyre incorrect size (i fitted one of the other cars standard wheels to get it thru as it had more tread.. didnt spot size difference)
  • Nearside Front coil incomplete
  • Offside Front coil incomplete
  • Nearside Rear coil incomplete
  • Offside Rear coil incomplete
Advisories
  • Front washers poor in operation
  • Rear number plate broken
  • Offside front brake binding
So all in all pretty ****e

Lights prob easy fix
Tyre easy fix
Exhaust not so easy fix but doable
Springs im a bit scared of in honesty i hate drop links with a passion and have never not rounded off bolts when doing them... so thought of removing both lots of susp from both cars to swap them over really scares me
