hi just bought weekend 1.6 1999 model.the abs light comes on and stays on and intermittently the handbrake light comes on,i believe this has something to do with ebd system.i am not mechanicaly minded so any advice in basic terms would be appreciated.car has done 82000 miles thanks

thanks for reply checked fluid levels they are ok.car is going into a garage i will ask them to check the sensors.

It might be worth checking that the problem is not simply the switch, this is located near the base of the handbrake lever, you get to it by removing the gaiter ( and the spring clips all drop into the centre consol never top be seen again). You can pull one wire off and see if the warning light goes out.

The ABS light also came on a few times and finaly stayed on.
The ABS unit has a weekness, the 2 relays inside the box burns their contacts.
I replaced both relays and the system worked again.
BUT, it's quite some work.
You need to remove the battery, the batterytable and the fusebox on top of the ABS unit.
Unscrew the brakepipes and remove the ABS unit.
Open the unit and replace the 2 relays. (Siemens A-3029 X077 V23133)
Reassemble and refit the unit and remember to bleed the brakesystem.
