Talked this over with ts86net and The Mighty a while back and finally got round to doing it myself.

This was done on the 2.0 20v engine, it should also work on the 1.6 & 1.8. The diesels have a similar layout but I cannot guarentee that the noise levels will be tolerable. ;) Not sure about other engine layouts but it is fairly easy to check.

This mod is so simple and gives so much in return that it is hard to believe it.

The induction system consists of a moulded combined intake/radiator fan guard, rubber intake pipe, plastic elbow joint and the air box/filter.

When ts86net and I had a look at the elbow we both realised that the end that joins onto the airbox is larger than the end that joins onto the intake pipe. So by removing it we would be allowing more air to enter the airbox.

First unplug the rubber intake pipe from the top moulding and elbow. No clamps on mine, but there may be on yours.

If you then take the top of the airbox off and remove the filter you can see that the elbow is just clipped into the box. You can remove it by squeezing the pipe by the lugs and pulling. This does not damage the elbow and it can be replaced in about 10 seconds at a later time without having to take anything to bits. Put the filter back in and replace the airbox top.

Plug the rubber pipe back onto the top moulding and you now have a cold air feed.

Now go for a test drive. I find that you can only just hear the difference on idle and when cruising but that it really ROARS on acceleration, ts86net and I both think that the mod sounds great.[8D]:p ts86net says he gets more power but I have not had it on long enough to be sure yet. I am going to fit a K&N replacement panel filter next which will release a few extra bhp though.:p

I may also fit an extra cold air feed pipe from the front grill to just below the airbox. You just have to keep it approx. 4" away from the inlet incase you scoop some water up.

If you try this and decide you don't like it; then it takes about 30 seconds from opening the bonnet to closing the bonnet with the mod reversed:D

Please feel free to comment on this post and let us know if you have tried it yourself:D

This only works on 2.0 / 1.8 / 1.6!
And 1.4?

Joao,

The 1.4 has a different engine layout and air box so I don't know if it will work or not. Just trace the intake pipe into the air box and see if that pipe is larger than the front of the intake.

If not you should still be able to drill the air box and get the same effect.:D

Wow, great!

I think more power isn't what I meant... it "breaths" better if you like. Just keeps pulling through the revs. And yes, the noise is wicked!

I've actually got my elbow joint on, so basically have a removed rubber pipe. Your description polecat, however, does sound better so I'll give that a go when I change the filter in the next couple of days. I think I gave up on the elbow 'cos I didn't think to discover the clips.

Enjoy all [8D]

Right, I had a quick look at lunchtime. It seems simple enough, but surely more air would be getting in if I leave the air intake in place. If the section of rubber piping is removed the air won't be feeding directly from the grille.

I had a look at the pictures on your webpage and the engine looks basically the same. The air filter is to the right, in the black case.

Any chance of a picture so we can see what you've done?

Yeah,
I'll get some pics up in the next couple of days.
I have left the pipe in that comes from the intake under the bonnet, so that any air coming in that way is still ending up by the air box. But after checking the air route from the bonnet grille into the air intake i'm pretty sure that any air getting into the original system was sucked in rather than blown in. All the more reason for me to put an additional pipe in from the lower grille.

Hmm... Looking at your photos Dave I think my elbow joint might be a bit different.

From what I remember there was a also a (rusted) metal pipe connected to the elbow on its underside. What is this metal pipe and why is it connected to the airbox elbow? I think my elbow removal troubles might have been related to that metal pipe of mine, or at least a combination with the clips you talked about.

I'm lost [?][?][?]

:(
Check to see where the pipe goes. It may just be a drain[?]
Is it a small dia or a large dia pipe? I'm not aware of any engine control equipment or sensors located before the air filter??

The clips on my elbow are just moulded into the plastic. The elbow is really quite thin and flexible.

oh I did. He was kinda drunk at the time but he won't mind. I told him it'd make his car sound better and if he didn't like it i could change it back. Seemed fairly content with the idea[8D]
